Imperial equivilant for rebel transport

175 posts in this topic

Honestly, I don't really think i'd care all that much if they just fudged the scale and made it a Huge base. Maybe make the model itself a bit bigger than the transport or Tantive. I just wanna fire dem guns, mang.

I just wanna fire dem guns, mang.

That's a even bigger problem then the size of the ISD. Turbo laser batteries aren't effective against fighters. So you have a ship that's massively out of scale that can hardly hit a X-Wing, yet the X-Wing can't do any damage to it either.

So what reason is there to have one?

I had a vision... In my vision FFG released chunks of a star destroyer... First the bow... next the stern, and so on... after several expansions, we could assemble a complete star destroyer. On a more serious note, the star destroyer is too iconic to not make an appearance in this game. I don't know how, when or what relative scale it will be, but I'm positive that we'll see one in the future.

I have a 6/20 foot table at the house I doubt a star destroyer would fit to scale on it but I would be willing to knock down a wall if need be. I estimate that if they made it to scale it would be shipped broken down and would retail at about 5k. " I would be fine with this"

Keep in mind that an Imperial II Class Star Destroyer at 1/270 scale would be just under 6 meters long. :)

But FFG has show us that they are willing to change the scale if necessary to accommodate large ships.  I think more than size, power level is the problem with Star Destroyers in this game.

Depending on where you get you information a single Star Destroyer has 120 turbo lasers not counting concusion missiles and ion cannons.  They also hold up to 72 Fighters.

You think an 8-ship TIE Swarm is nasty try 9 times that coming out of a Star Destroyer.  Granted their launch rate isn't great.

But FFG has show us that they are willing to change the scale if necessary to accommodate large ships.

The only thing they've really shown is they're willing to change the scale for the Huge ships, they've said nothing about having different scales for different ships. The Transport and CR-90 are the same scale.

It's also been said that it's part of the license that they can only do so much with the scale... Which means they can't make a 1/5000 scale ISD.

But yes the scale in terms of firepower is a bigger issue then size.

The CR-90 is about the most powerful ship you can really put into game like X-Wing that doesn't require fundamental changes to the game itself. Changes that go way past what ever they're likely to do with Epic rules.

A 8-12 Tie squad is going to be a threat to a CR-90, 6 Tie Bombers would be a fairly large one. A single squad of X-Wings means nothing to ISD. It wouldn't even bother firing on them, just release 36-48 Ties and blow them out of the sky.

Anyone care to speculate on a comparable equivilant of the rebel transport for the empire? Can the Empire expect to see some entirely different?

BFF-1 bulk transport  and an Imperial customs corvette would be comparable.

The Imperial cutter the Nebulon B2 or the Storm Commando Escort carrier would be perfect. The Escort Carrier could also come with a Hunter or a regular Tie to mirror the Rebel transport.

Why not both! Imps field twice the ships anyways. This could be the more support oriented ship (perhaps granting free heals to other ships), while the Lancer could be the dedicated attacker.

Now I could get behind that.. what.. 3 inch to 4 inch models, SSDs and blockade runners.. mon cal ships, interdictor ISDs... dreadnaughts... cruisers, nebulon B ..

I'd buy a Cap Ship version of X-Wing in a heartbeat. I would however most likely never buy a ISD for X-Wing. Because anything they do with it would make it little more then a ISD looking CR-90.

Likelihood of a star destroyer or any other capital ship we haven't seennot withstanding, I fully have faith in FFG to make a large group of capital ships that all feel very unique from a gameplay point if view, as have for the twelve ships already in the game and the four upcoming ones. The game is always expanding, and it only makes sense for them to eventually release at least one imperial capital ship, and I fully expect it to feel different than either of the two we've seen. The corvette will undoubtedly beer very different than the transport because it has armaments, but it will also have a unique maneuver dial and possibly it's own template,as will any other capital ships. They may well have unique firing abilities as well, at last compared to other cap ships.

Point being: this game is ever expanding and some additions are better or see more play than others, but each one is and will continue to be different than the last and any before it. FFG is awesome.

I remember an XvT mission which had you take down an ISD with 8ish fully loaded X-Wings. If you went for the generators it was certainly possible. I don't know how much I would base off those games but being able to hit systems like that might be a functional solution. A minor issue though is that those X-Wings would cost in the area of $120 and a mission like that was still a challenge, not a fair fight. So you end up taking this game into Warhammer 40k territory in terms of cost just to be able to compete very quickly, and into Apoc territory in regards to game-length since the maneuver system while good, eventually drags things out beyond the dogfight scale.

If the scale was different for bigger ships, fighters were used as squads, and maybe drop the maneuver system I could see heading into large scale battles. Otherwise I would still be surprised if they didn't at least look into including large capital ships in scenarios somehow. Maybe not as models but as functional set-pieces for specific mission play.

Of course as far as the topic of suitably-sized ships go there are a few that did appear in the games. None I really loved, but certainly there are a few options.

the cool thing also, the tie phantom and tie defender were both in Empire at War also, so.......

there were some really cool ships in there that would be cool to see in this game. the Correlian gunship, hounds tooth, ig2000, verago, skipray blast boat, system patrol craft, turret defenses (missile, laser, sensor, repair)

how about softball or basket ball sized asteroid bases?

these could have turret defenses and even have its own compliment of fighters to launch during game.

or how about the golem defense platforms from xwing and tie fighter PC games, basically space stations armed to the teeth. i know this is a dog fighting game, but i know there are people out there who love to play just to play with crazy **** like that!!!!(raises his own hand)

:D

If they do release the Star Destroyer, then they will be forced to release the Mon Cal Cruiser for the Rebels. Then this game is no longer a fighter based game. It's Star Trek Attack wing. It's best for them "FFG" to just make a stand alone version of X-wing using Star Wars universe capital ships like attack wing.

I agree. I think the current releases for big ships are going to be big enough. It is a starfighter game after all. One option to include a Star Destroyer or Mon Cal cruiser would be as a tile set showing its surface. We've seen plenty of movie shots of fighters zooming down the length of a capital ship and they don't whiz by instantly. Those things are BIG. I've seen some scenario games where guys have modelled the Death Star trench. You could include the surface of a Star Destroyer the same way, with defence turrets maybe, shield towers, maybe even a bridge structure to attack as a scenario objective.

There is absolutely no way you could include a Star Destroyer in this game as a tabletop miniature without it looking somewhat pathetic. It's just too big. Even some of the smaller capital ships are just too big. Transitioning them to an Attack Wing type game would be much more logical. But if that was to happen, I would hope FFG would try to keep the ships in scale with each other.

I put forth my two suggestions for light Imperial vessels to match the Rebellion.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tartan-class_patrol_cruiser

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Carrack-class_light_cruiser

Now according to the Tartan's article, the Carrack is an early design of the Tartan, but the Tartan was specifically designed for the Empire at War game. However...

"... it finds itself on relatively equal footing against opposing corvettes, such as the CR90 corvette (with only a slightly greater firepower output)"

Now if I am not mistaken, the CR90 is the same class that the Tantive IV is, making the Tartan Patrol Cruiser the perfect addition to X-wing. The reason why I suggested the Carrack-class light cruiser, is because the Carrack can also be a light carrier. TIE Fighters don't have hyperdrives, y'know.

The Gozanti Cruiser is just over 6" long in 1/350 scale, so a 1/270 scale version would work very well.

I've been saying this for a few weeks.. lol Love that ship, the Carrack is growing on me too, but at 350 meters  it is a might big, but I love that it has room for externally hung TIEs.

They will release ISD in highly reduced scale

No they most likely won't. At the amount of reduction it would need, it's no longer really a ISD, and so would serve no purpose in the game itself. There is simply no way to make something with the size and firepower of a ISD fit in a game like X-Wing.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.. I heard the same about people saying the falcon will be the biggest ship in x-wing. Well i understand don't want that the game is changing. But many people want capital ships , and ffg will give it to them for hundred of dollars. Revell did that in the early 90' and the size for the transports there is almost the same and the star destroyers there looked still amazing huge but fine for miniatures gaming. Even Lego has star destroyers and the executor. I doesn't matter how lagre the model is. . What cares is the base size. All capital ships will be released, because enough people will buy them. And many for the upgrade cards too.

If you watch the interview on youtube and read the designers reaction in his face , you know they will come. The ISD is the most iconic imperial ship, and it's seen in many upgrade cards. ( for people often see an hint when spying ships in new upgrade cards)

They will never release a Star Destroyer.

The CR-90 is under-scaled as it is, as a compromise. An ISD would be ludicrous.

Besides, what would a capital ship be doing in a starfighter game? The CR-90 is pushing it. An ISD might as well come from another game.

In the thrawn-trilogy, both rebels (new republic) and empire are fighting to get controll over the same ships, so it is not unrealistical to imagine a battle with a transport on the imperial side.

I can see an Imperial transport, maybe even a Imperial Blockade runner, but an ISD is a little far fetched.. as mentioned the scale to make it look good is on the range of 18 feet.. to scale it to fit on a board of 3'x3' ... it would look ridiculous

Would I love to see their version of an ISD, sure, I'm sure it would look awesome, just put a small Tantive IV in with it for size reference so we remember that it's friggin huge.. ships like that should be reserved for an Attack Wing style game, where they can push out all the capitol ships from both factions.

An ISD is more than a little far fetched. To get it onto the 3x3' it would have to be around 18" or less and this would mean downscaling it to around 1/3000th. It would just look wrong with the starfighters. Even a Victory would be too big. They just wouldn't fit in and I think it would make a farce of the game. They have gone to great lengths to maintain a scale for the starfighters, why screw it up by making a model that much out of scale with the rest.

If they haven't already, FFG should probably start working on a capital ship game, because there's obviously a demand for it, and with Attack Wing AND X-Wing they've got a good game mechanic to start with.

Considering the size of the Corellian Corvette, I'm thinking there is a bit of a change in the playing area of Epic games. They've said multiple times, that they are not sticking to one set scale for the Capital ships. And really, until we have see how Epic games play, I think it is a bit harsh to call adding a scaled down Star Destroyer will make the Epic/Cinematic game a farce is really reaching.

As I've said, I have plenty of fond memories of taking a single fighter against a Star Destroyer in video games, so I don't see it being too much of an issue. In the end, bitching about it makes no sense, because I'm sure FFG would find a reasonable and fun way to implement it anyway.

"We're gonna need a bigger mat".

Just to support some of the ships that are in the size category above the Tantive IV.  I still see small protions of ISD's as the setting for entire fighter battles.  The Death Stars as well.  Bring on the ship terrain mats with some 3D features such as turrets, sensor arrays, power generators, bridges and tractor beams.  If you really want to take on an ISD with a squad of X-Wings, it can be done.  But no "mini", sorry.
