xp in rumor quests

18 posts in this topic

I thought I had seen this topic addressed somewhere before, but I may have hallucinated it.. In the rule books for the mini-expansions, Trollfens and Lair of the Wyrm, it is stated that "the campaign phase is performed as normal after completing a Quest card."

Under step #3 of the campaign phase (in the main rule book) it's stated that the overlord player and hero players each receive one experience point, regardless of who won the quest (as listed in the Quest guide).

The thing is, in the Quest guides for the Trollfens and Lair of the Wyrm, there is no mention made of experience points being awarded to anyone. So is this aspect of the campaign phase ignored in the Trollfens and Lair of the Wyrm, and no xp awarded?

In researching the forums, I saw that Griton has posted that this is the case, and no xp is awarded. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any further discussion on this subject (official or otherwise)? Or is this the way everyone is playing it (with no xp award)?

If Griton see this post, is this an opinion, or have you seen something "official" on this topic somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

When we play, we award what it states in each quest. If there is no XP stated as an award we get none. I think this may be a way to keep things balanced throughout a campaign.

The OP is asking for a rules reference rather than for what one would "think" or do without clear support of the rules.

I don't have the rulebooks handy, but this could be a nice question to ask FFG.

Read the OP again...

Sure...

Here is the quote of the precise demand of the OP :

If Griton see this post, is this an opinion, or have you seen something "official" on this topic somewhere?

Now, here is the reference to the BGG wiki, which groups the answers given by FFG on the question (those answers are not absolutely official, but do have much more weight than "in my corner of the woods, we feel we should play this way" statements) :

Expansion/Mini-campaign: Lair of the Wyrm

Q: Do the Lair of the Wyrm quests such as "Gold Digger," "Rude Awakening," and "What's Yours Is Mine" award one xp per player at completion?A: The Lair of the Wyrm quests do not award any XP if they're played in a full campaign as rumors, mostly because adding too much extra XP could cause unfortunate math issues (as you clearly saw). They do, however, award XP if played as a mini campaign (rules are online if you hadn't seen them).

Hope that helped.

Don't heroes get coin in these rumor quests? If they do isn't that a math issue? Seems to me that is as bad or worse.

Heh, looks like everyone else beat me to it. ;-)

They do, and it can be depending on hero composition and how good they are at collecting treasure as well as which quest is played (I believe some have more tokens than others, but I don't have the maps with me).

It's part of the decision process for the overlord to play the rumor card. Is the chance at getting the relic (and threat tokens if playing with a Lieutenant pack) worth the possible gold the heroes will get?

There's also a travel card that heroes can use to force an Overlord to play a rumor card if he has one if they feel like they'll get the most benefit from it.

Rumor quests /w coin and relics vs plot decks. One hand you have the plot decks in the other your giving heroes more cash and relic chances. 4 vs one, 3 vs one somewhere in there math is a problem.

I test run a two player game with plot decks it seems more doable even though heroes have a advantage. Didnt play a full campaign but it was interesting. Plot decks seem like it smooths out the 3 player game. But if you add side quests does it still? Ill need to mess with that I'm guessing not.

Thats correct, i feel that issue needs to be errated or atleast house ruled.

If you remove all coins from side quests and just allow secret rooms that might be ok.

I have thought a fair bit about this and i am strongly considering removing all gold from the side quests, still allowing treasure chests and secret rooms. Also no additional shopping step would be allowed. That would lean the side quests slightly in favor to the overlord, but atleast it means those quests will actually get played ! Another option would be to just half the gold (rounding down).

There would still be incentive to pick up search tokens to get health/stamina potions and such to use in the quest. Aswell as a chance of picking items from the current acts dek through treasure rooms.

Honestly, I think the overall problem is that there is no focus on attempting to win the scenario most of the time (sure, some scenarios give something good for the OL, so both the heros and OL both want to attempt to win).

Gold is what makes the a win/loss at the end of the campaign (as it's the only mission you can actually win/lose) for the heroes.

Not letting heroes get gold by delaying them (most likely by killing heroes) is how the OL wins the last campaign.

If there was more of a push for players to have to make decisions between gold and winning the scenario...

IMO Threat has given the OL more reason to play these quests.  The Trollfiens quests are hard for the heroes early game, which can give the Ol a good chance to knockout players and gain threat.

Add that to the Threat gained for playing the quest and the reward for the completion (1 for for failure and 2 for the win), it can make it desirable to play a Rumour.  I earned six threat playing food for worms last time we played.

I feel like, if you win the first map as overlord, some of the bonus quests can be very hard for the heroes before they really have any gear, so playing them immediately and then choosing it as your quest can be rewarding. The relics you win from them can be quite helpful. It kinda sucks that the heroes get bonus gold, but I've found that you can deny the gold if you really work at it, and even if they do get them, getting the bonus threat and the victory are worth it.
