The Mysterious Gravity Belt

Recommended Posts

So Suns of Fortune is cool, but I have a nagging problem. As mentioned in another thread, on page 101 there is a table of equipment that lists a Gravity Belt. 500 credits, no encumbrance, 6 rarity. But there is no corresponding description that I can find in the book, so I don't know what it does... can anyone help me out? Wookieepedia says it's like a flying belt of some kind, but I'd love to know the mechanics in EotE.

Yeah, wookiepedia suggests a human-sized wearer could hover several meters off the ground and simulate flight via repulsorlift technology, and that said device is often used by performers.

This is a kinda sticky bit of gear; for 500 credits anyone can fly?  Okay, what's the catch?

Other than reduced sperm count I think hovering several meters isn`t exactly game breaking. I would have it have two functions, reducing a fall damage (possibly to zero), which would burn up all the energy in it. And I would have it let people do temporary zero gravity or very reduced gravity, resulting in floating in air or great leaps in height and distance. Combine it with a repulsor lift and it would become much like the jetpack.

I agree, however, the two articles I linked imply that flight is possible, not just hovering.   I could see that causing issues for some crunch-hungry folk.  I don't reckon it'll cause any problems for me, but if it does, the first triumph my baddies roll will be to shoot that thing into slag.

They did include a Grav-chute that does the job of preventing you from taking falling damage, so I don't think it's for that. I guess it's just a sort of super cheap, psuedo flying device? I'm just hungry for an official description. It is, for some reason, driving me mad.

Are you sure that you aren't thinking of 40k?

My Necromunda gang managed to find something specifically called a grav-chute and I'd use it to have my Melee specialist jump off buildings during a charge.

What I remember about the gravity belt from the D6 system, all it does is slow down your fall enough for you to land safely. No hovering or flying effects. A very useful piece of equipment, but of course you'd have to trade-off the equally useful utility belt.

So allow for a flight ability like that of the toydarians, not as good as the jetpack which is treated as a vehicle.

That's what I was thinking. A jetpack can reach speeds up to Vehicle-2. The grav-belt would probably be limited to personal-scale movement.

We see lots of hovering things that can't fly in the movies like droids and vehicles.  I don't see a problem with giving a hover ability on a belt, but Boba Fet and R2D2 would make it seem like you'd require a jetpack to fly.

If I were to create rules for this, I'd say it enables you to land from a drop without taking damage.  As well as jump twice as high as normal.

Maybe or maybe not require skill checks.  Like, you can potentially land without taking damge, but if you land wrong (fail skill check), you can take a wound (twist your ankle or something).  Even with a parachute, you can injure yourself when landing.

That's kinda what I was thinking - you see some impressive Jedi acrobatics in the movies, perhaps this tool will allow for that with non-jedi.  I'd imagine it works much like grav-ball hoverboots, and within these links you might find some tools to mitigate this device.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

It's handy, but not a game-breaker since the wearer is still moving at character-scale speed, and would really only have an impact in ignoring difficult terrain as well as certain forms of impassable terrain.

I actually created a device just like this for an Alternity game. I had it modifiable so that you could reduce or eliminate the effects of gravity for a few rounds. Felt alittle like Dr.Who when I just floated up a 70 story building, though much like in zero gravity I was spinning and flailing alot. I imagine having some control over it would be benificial though. Eventually I bought a zero-g suit and moved around like a silent jetpack. Was fun!

This would also make more sense for characters like Cade Bane who has tiny little thrusters on his boots but moves around better than the Fetts. He combines a gravity belt and boot thrusters to have a working flying system. Yes I know it's Clone Wars reference but atleast now I can explain it to myself, even if it is B grade reference materials.
