My Repaints

112 posts in this topic

After seeing so many repaints on the forums I finally cracked and got to work on my fleets.

Started with just wanting to light up the engine glows but it's hard to just stop there.

Once I started dirtying up one X-wing I couldn't stop and kept going lining all the ships with Deep or Dark wash from Army Painter. Then of course I had to do the yellow markings and the red number markings, then i started looking at the movie models and adding more markings like the candy stripes, the red lines around the engine intakes and the heap of yellow on Wedge's X-wing and of course all the R2 units painted silver then colours ove the top.

Used a mix of Model Color fleuro magenta and orange to get the right colour then a bit of white mixed in then straight white in the middle to get the nice glow effect. For the big ships I pulled out the airbrush

So far I've only done the glow on these, need to get to work on detailing up the rest and converting one of the Falcons

Had to break up the posts cause of the picture limit

also made some asteroids from lava rocks

One thing is that after painting the Rogue squadron markings on you feel compelled to run them as the characters instead of just Rookie pilots. In their 1st game they seem to gain some luck though since even Biggs managed not to die and you can see Wedge lining up a sweet Expose shot. Can see a few of my tokens I designed too in the last few shots.

Nice, i have thought about using a florescent color for the engines and then mounting a black light in the game room some place so they glow.. also thought about doing florescent stars on one of my game mats for the same effect. did you do all that free hand or did you airbrush the wash? also thought about using lava rocks for asteroids as well!! too me that's what i ALWAYS thought they looked like anyway!!  What is your game mat made out of??

Thanks for the comps. Swedge it was all free hand, the only airbrushing was the big glows on the large ships, did them since I was airbrushing up a quick fleet of Firestorm Armada Terrans

shame the ships are scaled so small it would be cool to be able to use the range to sub for something like cargo containers or a space station or something

Very nice, and unique.

This is a completely unrelated question: how do you upload images when posting? I see a My Media button, and an Image button. Image obviously links to a website. It looks like your images were uploaded directly though. How do you do that? I haven't figured out how to get anything *into* My Media, so it's obviously blank when I click on it and search for anything.

Thanks.

Juggler, get a photo sharing account, like photobucket, when you load pictures there they have a drop down menu on the picture that has links. You copy the image link (has file in it) and then drop that in your post.. that's what I've done.. works fine

These are some nice repaints, I need to do more rebel ships..

Thanks, that's what I assumed, I was just being lazy and trying to avoid having to create another account somewhere.

I really enjoyed looking at these photos. The engine glow on the X-Wings is a sick touch. Those larger ships are incredible pieces as well! I only wish I could be that talented!! Great work guys!!

Hey all I've been at it again. When I got a 3rd B-wing I decided to paint them up as Blue Squadron so went with a mix of rebel style banding and picking out panels around the cockpit

Decided to make some better turrets for my Y-wings as well since they're barely raised detail on the minis. I filed down the regular ones then built new turrets from the smallest thickness of Evergreen plastic tubing for the base and plastic rod for the gun barrels.

Also been working on my Firesprays. I was a bit torn between painting up my 2nd one as one of the named pilots or the generic but in the end went with Krassis' Firespray since I seem to run him often when I field one. I started by overpainting the red part with a beige basecoat before layering on the yellow. Then redoing the dark lines and then dirtying up the whole thing. Then I darkened the shoulders before adding a few areas of blue. Then lots of little detail stuff like lines and stuff. Then lots of chipped paint marks all over the place.

After doing Krassis I ended up wanting Boba's Slave 1 a bit stronger colour wise. I went over the red starting with a dark hull red then working up to a brighter red. Then the shoulders got done up in a nice dark military green. Then again lots of paint chips and incidental markings.

Oh and of course several coats of super gloss on the canopies.

love the subtle shading..  they don't look like the paint was glopped on like many of the others i have seen on here.. A real problem in this small of a scale. Some thick paints can completely obscure the details!

Thought it was about time I converted my 2nd Falcon. I was thinking of doing an armoured YT from the Haynes YT-1300 owner's manual but thought I'd start simpler with the centered cockpit YT conversion that so many do just to see how hard it was to cut into one of these things.

So 1st up was to remove the radar dish and it's mounting. I hacked at the side of the round part till it popped off then squared off the hole with some filing. I wanted to put some detail under there.

Then the arduos task of cutting away the cockpit and and access tube. The actual cockpit front comes off the tube quite easilly with a bit of back and forth action with a heavy blade. Getting the tube off though is a bunch of work scoring along the edges repeatedly until you cut into your thumb  :( but it eventually comes away cleanly.

14296836685_c318744704_o.jpg

next part to cut away is the front of the middle mandible section which comes off surprisingly easilly. Turns out those front parts are hollow and made of 3 parts each so you just need to cut the topmost part and it will come off cleanly.

14293480821_5d6ef24552_o.jpg

I got this funny idea for how to put a plate into where the radar dish was without being forced to split open the ship to get to the back of the hole. I cut a bit of plastic card bigger than the hole but that could fit in through the hole then drilled 2 holes through it and threaded then put in and pulled it tight against the hull while I glued it in.

14110139639_4062208946_o.jpg

For the big hole where the tube was I measured against some thick plastic card and cut out a matching panel. Then glue some ribs under the hole to support it.

14110139399_bdb82ce848_o.jpg

I bent the plastic a bit to match the hull curve and sanded the underside to give it an edge that matches the rest of the hull.

14293483721_f5a16473c5_o.jpg

I used a small bit of plastic card to fill in the bottom edge as well then after scribing some lines radiating out from the center to match the other side of the hull then started adding small rectangles all over the place. I see most people that do this use too large panels so I was careful to use tiny pieces to match the rest of the detail.

next detailing to fill in the rim

to be continued...

Now back to putting this thing together. To make room for the new cockpit access tunnel you need to cut off the tubing detail on the front middle mandible then sand it smooth with a flat need file. Then taking the tube section use side cutter to clip down the sides then sand lots till you have a flat bottomed section that has the detail section along the top nicely centered. This was then glued in position so it's flush with the front of the cut of section. The cockpit is then glued on the front of that. Then more tiny bits of detail rectangles glued on again.

Oh I forgot to mention in the last post that I also puttied up the join between my new panels and the original hull. I found it so obvious on everyone elses rebuilds where the cockpit was as you see the obvious rectangle cutout shape. Mine blends into the panels already there.

14296276404_25aeaf8090_o.jpg

With a blank space under the cockpit I was tempted to stick on the front plate of one of the cut off sections but instead decided to make my own detail bit from a couple layers of plasticard to make a nice grill section and a couple tubes for the missile tubes.

14293480691_ab79e32fe5_o.jpg

I then filled in the detail pit where the radar dish had been

14294863342_f2f1238a5c_o.jpg

At the back I added one of the front cut off parts to make the engine deck look a bit different. I made another grill at the back of it.

And now for the quick paintjob on the conversion. I've initially painted the new sections and the areas that they blended into to the regular YT-1300 look but also with a bunch of added washes and stain lines.

I plan to add more markings to it possibly like the prequel version of the Falcon. Just have to decide what colour blue, green or red markings.

PS how do you update the tile of a thread?

Cannot, you would need to start a new thread.
