Generic icebreakers....

6 posts in this topic

Just a quick question.

Cards like Anarch's Wymn (from the original set)

and there is a neutral version called Crypsis (original set again) are icebreakers but do not list a type, and look like all other ice version I have seen in any other way(except the virus).

Can a runner break any piece of ice with these, are they generic but expensive versions?

Am I missing something here?

Nope, you're spot on. AI Icebreakers typically can break all types of ICE. The only other unusual breaker released so far is Deus Ex, which breaks subroutines on any ICE with the AP subtype.

Yes, they can be used for ice of any type. They are also the only breakers that can pass "trap" ice like Data Mine. They're not particularly efficient, but they can be very useful.

The key when looking at what an icebreaker can break is what it says on the paid ability of the card. For example, Crypsis says, "(pay) 1 credit: break ice subroutine." Since it doesn't specify a type of ice, it can break any type of ice.

Contrast this with something like Yog.0, which says, "(pay) 0 credits: break code gate subroutine." This means it can only break code gate subroutines. Another way of stating this ability that may be clearer is "(pay) 0 credits: break a subroutine only on a piece of ice that has the type code gate." Due to the length of that statement, it's clear why they use a truncated version for the card itself.

A secondary key is to look at the "type" line on the cards. Crypsis includes the type "AI", which is a type that (so far) has always included the paid ability to break a subroutine on any type of ice. Yog.0 includes the type "decoder", which is a type that breaks code gate ice, hence the paid ability on Yog.0 that allows you to break code gate subroutines.

Usually Icebreakers are restricted to a specific category of ICE, sentry or barrier or code gate; AI's are restricted differently, technically able to break any type of ICE as long as it fits that AI's particular restrictions.

Current AI's:

Atman: Must match ICE strength exactly to break, requiring support or awful ICE selection to be truly versatile, expensive to set high strength

Crypsis: Needs to be spun up to break multiple ICE in a run without crashing, Virus counters can be cleared.

Darwin: Needs to be fed gradually or supported, Virus so clearable by Corp, relatively expensive to break each routine

Knight: only breaks one ice at a time, relatively expensive per subroutine

Wyrm: ridiculously expensive to break each subroutine, but supports fixed strength breakers or parasite and ok with e3 implants

Weird:

Deus X: Not an AI, but breaks specific subtype (AP, which usually do direct damage) or alternative use to soak any amount of Net Damage from one application of Net Damage.

No one breaker does it all on its own, each one has its own strengths. Pick the right tool for your deck.
