Big Game Hunting

37 posts in this topic

So I was thinking about the squad I flew at the weekend and what some permutations might be, how I could use expose and how to go "Big Game Hunting" that is to say large ships and high damage count B's and Y's and I came up with this.

32 points

Jan Ors

Determination, Ion Cannon Turret, Nien Nunb

26 points

Garven Dreis

41 points

Ibtisam

Fire-Control System, Heavy Laser Cannon, Expose

Ibti now has a potential 6 dice at all ranges, with a focus and TL likely.

No one says you have to Expose every turn and the ion cannon will help set up shots when you do, but on those turns when you absolutely want to hammer the point home, this will get it done.

It's got defensive weaknesses, but it will splash some pain out there.

Thoughts?

well, still 5 dice, which is ok :)

I would swap Garven for Biggs here, and get Engines for the (in this list) useless Expose

I don't see how you can reliably stress Ibti, so this list is not relying on that. In that case Ibti is probably unnecessary here (I don't see a useful EPT to give to her tp help this list, maybe marksmanship); it saves another 4 points to use a Dagger instead, those 4pts can be spent on Biggs to have him survive longer (shield upgrade, stealth device if you feel lucky, or R2D2). Getting Biggs also gives you 1 point, so you can go for something else on Jan Ors (instead of the Determination), like elusiveness or Squad Leader (to make the B more dangerous) or just Swarm tactic for striking early with your weapons.

All that being said, I don't think that this list can hold it's ground against most lists around. It might do well against HSF lists, or any other list that relies on a few heavy dudes (twin firespray, all shuttles, etc), but I'm quite sure that any list of 4+ ships will shred it. Still, might be fun to watch how it performs.

Opportunist WILL work with secondary weapons, so the plan doesn't need to be scrapped.
Now the question becomes "How do we prevent them from having Focus tokens and/or Evade tokens?"

Prevent them from taking place
~ Carnor Jax

~ Forced Stress

~ Forced Collisions
~ Force other actions (?)

And/or force them to spend it before you attack

~ Sensor Jammer

To me, Forced Stress and Forced Collisions both sound like Ion Cannon(s and/or Turrets). It extends the stress by keeping them from shedding it with green maneuvers, and you can push them into ships and/or asteroids at your leisure. If you've got lower pilot skill than your opponents, This also forces other actions to avoid those collisions, or to make up for lost ground (Boost and Barrel Roll, specifically).
Sensor Jammer does wonders alongside Opportunist, as they're choosing whether to A) Deal less damage, or B) Take less damage. Either way, you're in the money. Of course, if they have a lower Pilot Skill than you, then they get to take C) All of the above, which is annoying.

I have been involved in another topic on B-Wings with Torpedoes and this list came up and I thought it might work for Big Game Hunting. It goes a different tack, but could be highly effective.

Biggs Darklighter
Stealth Device now or Hull Upgrade when available.

36 points
Dagger Squadron Pilot #1
Fire-Control System, Proton Torpedoes, Advanced Proton Torpedoes

36 points
Dagger Squadron Pilot #2
Fire-Control System, Proton Torpedoes, Advanced Proton Torpedoes

(props to The RealStarkiller for the list)

I could also see this using Garven with an R2 unit at 99 pts.

The final possible change might be.

Dagger Squadron Pilot #2

I thought about using Blue squadron B's and giving Kyle more oomph, but I think this works just fine. Kyle may not need to donate a focus every turn, allowing for him to fire with a focus token.

What about this idea

3x blue squadron pilots. FCS, Ion Cannon, Advanced Proton Torpedos

Heres another one I'm about to try out this weekend but I think it should do a number on big ships

biggs shield

wedge ptl r2 engine

jan adrenaline blaster recon

I'm not sure whats the point of Kyle without the title. If he gives one focus to a B-Wing, his Blaster turret shots will be a waste.

Do you want him to stay out of range just providing focus support as long as the B-Wings live? I don't get it.

I've had some fun running something like this

31 points

Jan Ors
Ion Cannon Turret, Nien Nunb

41 points
Ibtisam
Advanced Sensors, Heavy Laser Cannon, Push the Limit

28 points
Biggs Darklighter
Hull Upgrade

Ibtisan can be consistently geting 5 dice + 1 re-roll + Focus at range 3 which just mauls things. Though I've been playing this as part of a larger force at 250pts... This on one flank can buzzsaw through enemy ships. I think Ibtisan got over 6 kills last game.

Kyle is there to provide the focus if needed because FCS wasn't locked on but then I came up with a better idea :-)

Dutch will allow some pretty nifty TL trickery and the one B keeps FCS just in case.

Drop Determination and get Draw their Fire for Jan or Wedge (Jan preferred with Chewie), to keep Biggs around one more turn. That might be the game changer ;)

Your initial plan with Jan and HLC was not bad Englishpete. Run PTL on Ibti to stress her and either Garven/Dutch plus Jan Ors with Blaster turret or Biggs plus Jan Ors with Ion cannon. The first version with Garven/Dutch makes them and Jan more of a threat to protect Ibti. The Biggs version relies on Ibti as the sole damage dealer and protects her better.

Like this perhaps? A pity that Jan has more Pilot skill than Garven. With Garven you would need Moldy crow on Jan to get all the focus you need.

Ibtisam — B-Wing 28

Push the Limit 3

Fire-Control System 2

Heavy Laser Cannon 7

Jan Ors — HWK-290 25

Determination 1

Blaster Turret 4

Nien Nunb 1

"Dutch" Vander — Y-Wing 23

Ion Cannon Turret 5

R2 Astromech 1

The Union of Mystical Void Manatee Workers protests this plan to construct a fleet with the sole and specific intent to hunt down and destroy light utility craft, all of which are clearly carrying critical medical supplies.

So after all the lists and thinking and tweaking, I have arrived at this.

36 points

Ibtisam

Fire-Control System, Advanced Proton Torpedoes

32 points

Dagger Squadron Pilot #1

Fire-Control System, Advanced Proton Torpedoes

32 points

Dagger Squadron Pilot #2

Fire-Control System, Advanced Proton Torpedoes

The lock and focus for the protons will really pack a punch. Take a locking shot at R3 then close for the R1 shot.

This actually looks like a capital ship killer squad.

I played this today and it needs a tweak. You need to use two Protons and one Advanced Proton if you are up against small ships. It will still maim big ships, but you simply can't get all three in R1 in time to use the Advanced Torps well.

I might even be tempted to go 2 HLC and 1 APT. The APT is really awesome when you get it off and should be the finishing blow.

If you choose to use 2 prots and an adv prot, I'd put Marksmanship on Ibi.

I don't say APTs are not because they are awesome if you have 2 actions. But i am also always ending up with HLCs on my B-Wings. Moving 1 qnd barrel rolling back a bit gives me 2 shots in the initial engagements pretty reliably. After that it often comes down to close quarters where my HLCs dont count that much. But those 4 Dice on multiple ships at any range and without addin defense dice at 3 is often worth it i can tell you that. Combine with FCS or an action giver like Kyle or Dutch and you will give them a run for their money!

It wasn't actions I found to be the issue, it was maintaining R1 to make the shots against small, mobile ships. The list I flew is brutal against big ships as you have a much easier time setting all three at R1. If however you are not certain to go up against big ships. (see tournies) then the list suffers badly. You certainly need TL and Focus on the APT shot and again, getting that whilst maintaining R1 on mobile ships is often not possible. It is a nice idea, but as flying has shown, is going to be situational. Perhaps in Epic mode it will be a killer of the new epic ships.
