My Worlds Experience

Recommended Posts

Jake,

I didn't mean to come off as having an ego.  I was trying to point out the strength of the event.  As I said in my post I didn't think I was going to make it.  I still can't believe I did because there were way better players then me that didn't make the cut.  I was also trying to make a point that several people said saturday and that is that the regional winner bye was to strong and that if you didn't have one you were in a tough spot from the beginning.  I think that is garbage and needs to change.  That was my main point.  If I came off as having an ego I'm sorry that was not in any way my intention.  I was not trying to flaunt.  I was trying to point out the strength of the event and how hard it was.  I was trying to draw attention to the fact that there were all these amazing players there and that like katarn007 probably should have made the cut instead of me.

That tournament was brutal and I can't imagine trying to do it again or with more people using that same format.

Again Jake sorry I didn't mean to come off that way.

Don't worry about it. I probably read too much into it and got feisty - a consequence of being Irish.

Tournaments this big are a pain when it comes to tie breakers. TC had a mini meltdown when there were more than a few 3-1 finishes. I take it as the nature of the beast, but I do feel a little bitten to not have made it in.

In a perfect world they either go another round or take 32. (of course someone then is 33rd and loses on tie breakers...

In the World Championship of having a good attitude and being a cool guy, you are the winner, man. It was a pleasure to meet you. Nice job on thoroughly kicking my butt and nice work making it so far in the Team Covenant tournament.

All of the X-1's that made it in were regional champs I believe... May be wrong, but yeah they got phenomenal breakers from the but and then there were effectively 5 people who some how went 5-0 (2 had a modified win)

With the change to the Regional system, there will be fewer regionals next year, so that will mean fewer first round byes.  It'll help the problem.  Your Store Champs will feed first round byes into Regionals, which will feed first round byes into Worlds.

There were 34 first round byes this year.

Yeah after hearing more about how the system will work it should hopefully lead to a better first round experience next year.

Total side note Paul grats and were you able to get a new flight I read you missed it sadly.

Let's say 114 for round numbers.  34 had a bye 1st round.  So 80 played the first round and 40 had a 1-0, 40 had a 0-1 from playing, and 34 had a 1-0 from the bye.  So 74 were 1-0 at the start of round 2.  That should have been cut in half to 37 for round 3, 19 for round 4, 10 for round 5 and finally 5 by the end of round 5. (rounding up).

The regional winners didn't get a direct feed into the top 16, but their strength of schedule was helped significantly since the bye was counted as 25 points (strongest match possible) when they were 4-1.

Next year, assuming some percentage of reasonable growth I think we are going to need 6 seeding rounds.

While you did end up flying into the teeth of howlrunner's range 1 friend's, when I rolled like I did I can't take too much credit. My shuttle only used vader once despite one shotting a few ties, all while being blocked. It was outside of the standard deviation I'm used to seeing. The dice thoroughly kicked your butt, I just got to watch. I did enjoy the casual play feel to what was a very high level match and you were a blast to play against and talk xwing with. You need to get up on Vassal and we'll give you a rematch or two.

I hope so. I can see the problem with xwing. It takes up twice the space of the other games and I'm guessing takes a little longer to play. I think an extra round with less byes would go a long way. I'm scared that there will be less regionals so I might not take mine, but it can't be much harder than the first one when I had to beat Doug. Even so, there will likely still be a few at worlds th at barely miss the cut on tie breakers.

I'm also wondering if we could come up with a more granular scoring method for matches to even things out a bit more.  Like wins are X points, with a modifier for how many points you have left on the table when you finish.  Just thinking out loud (so to speak).

Regional winner who didn't make the cut here :-)  (finished somewhere in the 20s; went 3-2 with both games lost to top 16 qualifiers).

Finishing 4-1 and not making the top 16 does suck.  5 rounds is a serious limitation, I think that 6 rounds should be the standard.  FFG's explanation as to "why 5 rounds" was that people had flights they needed to catch on Sunday night, which makes a lot of sense.  maybe start earlier on saturday, or heck, start on friday!  (Netrunner got the primo Friday-Sat slot.)

I had a lot of fun hanging out with all of you this weekend!  And sorry again Kelvan for 1) breaking your tie fighter and 2) not going out drinking with you on Saturday night!

Possibly, points equal to the points you kill, with bonus points left over from your survivors? The sum of the points will always be 200 (excepting fleets built to 99 or 98 standard for initiative), and the closer a game, the closer the margin of victory, but the victor still has a huge advantage, pointswise.

The closest gap between a winner and loser in this system would be if one Academy Tie was the last ship standing, and finished off the final ship of the opposing fleet, at 88 vs 112, and it could go all the way to a perfect game at 0 vs 200, or a tie game at 100 to 100 (i.e. I detonated a bomb and/or vadered, and it killed both of our last ships simultaneously). The swiss method of determining the strongest opponents vs the weakest opponents would then be used as a multiplier in your tier of win-loss rationes.

We've got the point system in the game already. Why not use it?

you owe me a one. there was talks of the prominent Midwest scenes inviting each other to store championships. we should get Chicago and Kc involved and I'll take you out to bbq and some beer.

What sucks about the current scoring system is that even points killed ignores the condition of what you have left. My first game was my four Blues against two BH and a Lambda. When they announced time and we had to play our final round my Blue had all 3 hull and 2-3 shields left. His last BH was down to a single hull point. He was going to win on points, 75-67 even though he was about to die.

I didn't have time to come around for another pass; so I had to risk a tight 2k to try and sneak a kill shot in. A rock JUST blocked the way I needed to roll and I wasn't going to clear his base straight so I had to roll back and left and hope for the best but my corner went off the map. I had no other play though because I was losing on points despite a decided advantage in the condition of our remaining ships.

Sounds awesome!  Will start working on priming the pump at home for this :-)

My issue is there is no modified loss.. From what I've seen and I've only played 1 tournament, it's very easy to get to the end have a couple of points between you and the opponent and get 0 points... Draws really can't happen.... I don't think I've seen one.

A hard fought game where one side just pips the other by 1 point, shouldn't give the loser 0 points.

Draws do happen.  There were multiple at the May 4th regional this year.  Dual Falcons vs Dual Falcons = likely end up with Chewie vs Chewie at the end.  That's getting less common, so they may get less common, but it's a possibility.
