Converting a Dark Heresy character to Only War = double XP?

I just finished converting one of my player's Assassin from DH to OW rules.

 

In DH, he spent 10,900 xp. After I gave him all the skills, characteristics advances and talents he had in DH, he came out as a 19,150 xp OW character (almost double XP).

 

I also noticed that in DH, with the "abstract" method, a PC earns 200 xp / session, while in OW it's 400 xp / session.

 

Do you think it's a good rule of thumb to give a player converting from DH to OW double the XP he earned in DH to "re-make" his character with OW rules?

How do you handle the skills that have been unified?

 

that was pretty straightforward, I just bought the "unified" skill if he had any of "old" skills.

 

For example, he had Silent Move +20, and Concealment +10, so I bought Stealth +20.

It might make some sense. In my eyes, DH characters are already "skilled" in something; they have a use. That's why a mighty Inquisitor has elevated them a bit above the huddled masses. I can see the OW character as new from basic training, and being thrown into their first meat-grinder, but the Inquisitor doesn't just pick up strays; they have to be USEFUL to him/her.

 

Makes me wonder what a full Inquisitor might look like, in OW stats. Between their plethora of skills, esoteric weapns/gear options, and all, they could be frightening, but FFG has done some efforts never to write one in a non-DH book (Black Crusade being an exception, and I love her write-up; could almost easily work in OW, if she needed to "requisition" a few Guardsmen.) I always wanted one in DW, just as a benchmark, for all of those people who wanted to play one next to SM's, for whatever reason.

What did you use for Aptitudes? There is a fairly high variability of costs for advances based on the aptitudes of the character. Is it possible the reason the cost was so high is that you gave the Assassin archtype the wrong combination of aptitudes?

A realistic Inquisitor would look more like J. Edgar Hoover than the Black Crusade writeup. :)

 

Just a joke there -- I know this isn't realistic. :)

I used a conversion document I found on these forums. Assassin gets WS, BS, AG, PER, Fieldcraft and Finesse. Seemed about right to me.

 

Also, I don't think the costs is "high". OW characters earn 400 xp per session, versus the 200 xp per session of DH, so double the xp looked allright.

It's probaly difficult to come up with a hard and fast rule as to some extent the exp difference between OW and DH characters is going to increase as the characters progress.

 

Due to OW discriminating though cost and DH discriminating through access, if the careers translate well to apptitudes low level characters are likely to mainly taking the cheaper OW advances which are the same cost. As you go further on they gain access to skills and talents further outside their niche, as well as higher level talents, all of which costs more in only war.
