Another Character Generator

First off thanks to everyone who put in time on this project it's great.  Only been messing with it for a little bit now, looks great.  I have noticed one thing so far, and i could be missing something entirely as well, but when I go to select Force powers I've noticed the drop down box is blank.  I must've screwed something up when transfering my custom files to the new program cuz im getting this: 

"Unhandled exception has occured in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately." 

This only happens when I select the Explorer characters.

I changed the way I updated panels so that only the panels that require updating are actually changed.  Unfortunately, I keep finding combinations that I didn't put in :)  When specializations are updated, it should be updating force powers, but it isn't.

 

Until the next update comes out, all you need to do is click on the Options button and click "OK".  That'll force the powers panel to update.

A few potential issues I have noticed upon first inspection:

  1. In the character generator the vehicles list stops at Loronar e-9 explorer.  (Launch char gen, click vehicles tab, hit new, scroll down the list).
  2. In the character generator under motivations, the Discovery option is listed twice (Launch char geb, click motivations, hit new, scroll down the list).
  3. In the character generator when picking a species some species have a species option dropdown with only one option.  Is this intended?  For example, the gungans have subspecies options with two choics which makes sense, but then they also have dropdown choices for Breath and Swim, but neither of these have any other choices to choose from.
  4. In the data editor is there a way to add or replace the images for species?  I made an alternate Herglic and want to be able to add a photo, but don't see an option anyplace for an image.

Wishlist:

  • Anywhere that you have an image (species, equipment, vehicles, etc.) I'd love to be able to click on the pic or hit a zoom button to have the full-size image open up in a new window.  This may not be valid if the images don't actually get any bigger.

Has anyone entered the necessary data for all the bits left blank (Talents, Equipment etc.. Would anyone be willing to share this. I have done some and would be happy to upload somewhere or work with anyone willing to do the same

 

It doesn't look like your account it set up to recieve messages.  (fix that?) Although I don't think we are allowed to share the files (are we?), I have some advice for you on how to make things go faster with the manual importing.

Explorer is working fine for me.  Just give me the error message and the first location.  I don't need the entire call stack.

1. You're probably filtering Type on "Patrol Boat".  Set it to "All Types" and you'll see more.

2.  Discovery is only showing up for me once.  Did you already add it as custom data?  If so, launch the data editor and remove the one that you added.

3.  Yeah, that's intended.

4.  No, but you can do it by hand.  The instructions are in the documentation.

 

The species pictures are intentionally small, as are the equipment pictures.  The other ones are usually larger, however.  If this is something everyone wants, I could add a form that will display the pictures full-size.

Just as a warning, if you've added custom data for any of the newer source books, they're included as stock in this release.  You'll probably need to go into the data editor and remove any of the duplicates.  I would first copy the descriptions from the ones that you added (assuming you entered descriptions for them) and transfer them to the stock item before deleting.

  2. Good catch, I removed my custom one (migrating over the data into your entry) and it is fixed.
  3. Cool, I assume it's for future options or something that is neccessary in code for other stuff to work.
  4. I will take a look in the docs.  Thanks for pointing the way!

I added the new talents found in Enter The Unknown as custom entries and was going to delete them to use yours but I saw that you have many of them listed as Age of Rebellion beta as the source, rather than Enter The Unknown.  I am excluding AOR from my games as it is beta and not oficially released (except in beta format), and kind of a different game.  For everyone who uses all sources this won't be an issue, but for those (like me) who exclude AOR then these talents will go away.  Any chance you would switch the source for these in the stock files to be the oficially released ETU book instead of the temp beta book?  The talents in question are: All-Terrain Driver, Full Stop, Master Driver, Natural Driver, and Pin.

Couple of questions:

Is the best way to install the new version to just copy it all into the old folders and replace?

I noticed one of my old characters will not load and crashes the program, any ideas?

Before copying everything over, delete your Data directory.  The new stock data should completely replace any existing stock data.  Keep everything else intact, and just copy over existing files.

 

Send me a copy of the character and I'll see if I can duplicate the issue.

Looks like I had a conflicting vehicle file.  Once I deleted it, everything worked properly and I saw all the ships.  Thanks again!

Alright it's not when I choose Explorer, sorry about that, it happens when choose characters from the previous version of the program.  But it says:

Did you add any custom items?  Try renaming DataCustom to something else, then run the generator again.  Remember to delete the empty DataCustom directory it creates before changing your good renamed one back to DataCustom :)

 

Send me a copy of one of the characters and I'll see if I can replicate the problem.

OK, found the problem.  There's a new feature where certain gear has innate mods added.  Most of these mods are of the ad-hoc variety, which means they're just descriptions and don't refer to an actual item descriptor.  In the new code, I wasn't checking for this, and it was looking up a descriptor based on a blank key.  I fixed it so it'll ignore ad-hoc descriptors when checking for things like talents and skill adds.

 

The fix will be in the next release.  In the mean time, you can go into the XML of that character and remove the Data Breaker he has. That was what was causing the problem.  Or just wait a couple of days for the fix :)

 

Oh, and that reminds me:  I forgot to add ad-hoc capability to the gear editor.  It only allows actual descriptors.  I'll see about adding that as well.

Another thing I noticed, it does not seem to be saving Obligation XP (or any choices in the new Obligation starting value section).

I'm unable to open the GM tools exe or the data editor on my machine. It just sits and spins forever. I don't even see the exe listed in my processes. I thought maybe the DL was corrupted, but I downloaded it again and wiped the previous files and it still just sits. The character creator works fine though.

Another thing I noticed, it does not seem to be saving Obligation XP (or any choices in the new Obligation starting value section).

Yeah, I think the reason is that the class that had the options was inherited from a generic list, so the serialization was only seeing list elements and not the options.  I moved both obligation and duty option classes to the main character class, so it's now working.

I'm unable to open the GM tools exe or the data editor on my machine. It just sits and spins forever. I don't even see the exe listed in my processes. I thought maybe the DL was corrupted, but I downloaded it again and wiped the previous files and it still just sits. The character creator works fine though.

Try putting them into a brand new install and see if it works.  It could be some bad custom data or something like that.  Both work fine for me in my test install.

Here's what I've fixed so far:

 

  • When a force rating-producing specialization was purchased that turned on force powers, the force power panel was not updating.  It will now update.
  • Changed the source of All Terrain Driver, Full Stop, Master Driver, and Natural Driver talents to "Enter the Unknown".  They are in both EtU and Age of Rebellion Beta, but as EtU is an official, released source, and AoR Beta is not, it is better having them sourced to EtU.
  • Fixed an issue with certain gear containing built-in mods.  The code wasn't checking to see if it referred to a real descriptor, or an ad-hoc description.  It now checks for this.
  • The new obligation/duty option feature was not being saved with the character.  It will now be saved.
  • The enviro-suit armor should have been part of the "Sealed" category, since it is a sealed, full-body suit.  This has been fixed.
  • Updated the editors for armor and gear to support built-in mods, including ad-hoc mods.
 
Please let me know of any other bugs and I'll get the next release out as soon as possible.  I'll probably wait until about mid-afternoon tomorrow and get a quick bug-fix release out before evening (PST).
