Another Character Generator

Recommended Posts

I went to my FLGS today and picked up something black and shiny with lightsabers on the front :)  Two somethings, in fact.  So... no immediate release.  Instead, I'll update the data to the new CRB and add Imports for the new adventures.  Not sure when I'll get it out, since I'm going to be a bit busy for at least the next week, if not more.

Curious, have you tried to contact FFG directly regarding your character builder?  Since they do not have an official one they may authorise it.  In my experience FFG are far more reasonable than Wizards or GW.

I did a quick scan of the first few specializations and they were identical to the beta.  Then I started seeing some differences in the next few.  So they've at least changed some of the specializations for the CRB.  The more they've changed, the longer it will take to update the data.  But hopefully, not too long :)

I went through each of the species and, unless I missed something, they all seemed to be in line with the last beta update.  Backgrounds are kind of confusing, though.  It looks like they have three different categories (Cultural Background, Experiencing the Force, and Heeding the Call) instead of two like the other games.  I'm still not sure if you're supposed to choose one from each category or what.  If so, I may have to do some re-coding.

That's about as far as I've gotten with it :)

Another weird issue, I wonder if anyone has an idea?

I have created a custom skill, under userdata. I have created a character with the skill, and everything is fine.

I now want to create a character without that skill. I deselect userdata as a source. The skill does not show up in the skills page, for allocating ranks. But it still shows on the character sheet if I print it (with the dice pool).

How can I stop it appearing?

I tried searching the topic and couldnt find what i was looking for.

I have made a character on here and want to send the file to my GM so he can see it on his computer.... where are the saved characters kept?

i looked through. the changes i did see were more of the connection type. not the order of things.

I upgraded to WIndows 10 and now I get this window pop up when I try to print anything within the character generator program:

"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore the error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. The RPC Server is unavailable."

The scrollable portion of this error window contains this:

Just a note, OggDude mentioned in a previous post that if you have a long section of text, PLEASE hide it in a Spoiler.  That way everyone who reads this thread does not have to scroll through a lot of rubbish.

Thanks

Thanks for the info... since I am a non-tech I wouldn't know what part of the error is pertinent or not, neither do I follow this thread close enough to have read or remembered about "spoilers" and long texts protocols.  Windows 10 has been a bugger with my laptop on other issues, which I have finally been able to resolve.  I will find others, no doubt, as I use applications in it for the first time.

And yet, now you know, and have still not put that huge chunk of code in spoiler tags...

Please, go back and edit your post.

Oggy one question from someone with near 0 Ranks on Computers XD

It's possible to introduce to the program an option to add Talents or other bonuses freely? Thanks! :D

I'm going to be adding the ability to give free ranks in skills for GM Grants.  I can see about adding talents as well.

As far as printing goes, does if have an issue loading the preview dialog, or only when you actually go to print?  Have you defined a default printer?

The error pops up when I hit the print command and it loads the preview dialogue. I have defined a default printer and can print from other programs without issue. I'll update if I run into anything else that causes a print error, but so far, nothing.

Hey - thank you again very much for all this effort. Planning on hitting that good ol' donate button after my paycheck this month to give some real monetary thanks for all this effort you put in.

You could try deleting the saved config files.  That should get rid of the saved printer objects.  They can be found in Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\SWCharGen, and then in the various directories you see there.  There's different configs for different programs and versions, so most of what's in there probably isn't even used anymore.  It shouldn't hurt anything if you delete everything in that directory, except cause the apps to go back to their default settings.  Your characters, custom data, etc, won't be touched.

I've gotten through quite a bit so far.  I'm currently going through weapons, armor, and gear.  There is, in fact, a third background category where you can choose your attitude toward the Force.  This has now become a new master data file.  The Background pane has been restructured to optionally include this third category, if items exist for it.  And since the other two games don't have anything for this, you can optionally choose to have "no attitude" toward the Force.    While I was at it, I also changed the titles of the other two categories to make them more generic for all three games.  Instead of "Social Class", which was only for EotE, it's now called "Beginnings".  Instead of "Hooks", the other category is now "Reason for Adventure".  The various items from all three games should now make more sense.

The Morality panel in the character sheet will now have three panes instead of just two.  There's a pane for your current morality, an empty pane for morality added through the game, and another empty pane for conflict.

Also, I decided to split up motivations into two master data files.  There's now a separate file just for specific motivations.  The main reason is that in order to change the descriptions of specific motivations, you needed to actually customize the main motivation.  That means if something changed between versions, it wouldn't show up.  Plus, it confused people.  Since they're now their own file, you can change the descriptions like normal.  The downside, however, is that you'll need to enter in all of the descriptions again (sorry).

Anyway, this next version has a ton or changes and additions, and more will be following.  For instance, you can now save a shortcut to your character on your desktop.  Double-clicking it will bring up the generator and automatically load your character as the default (instead of a new character).  This will be handy for players who load the same character 99% of the time when they run the generator.

I still have a lot to do, so no ETA as of yet.  I'll keep you posted.

That did the trick! Print preview opens without any problems now. Thanks for your help, again!
