Validity of a Healing Character?

Hello, my friends and I enjoyed the Beginner's Game but found healing in it to be rather subpar and unnecessary. The Core rulebook seems to me to continue this. Or are we missing something? It seems to me as though a character dedicated to healing would have only a minor effect on fights what with healing only able to restore a few wounds per fight, but I love healing so I hope I'm wrong.

I don't remember Leia stopping to heal anyone in the deathstar. I might be mistaken... there was that few moments in the cut-away after the trash compactor. :P

 

In all seriousness, the game has a feel much more like the old d6 Star Wars than it does to d20. Its about avoiding damage and doing incredible heroic things.

 

That said... one of my players has a Doctor/Assassin who is wanted for dealing in black market organs. ;)

Have you seen how slowly characters heal on their own without a trained healer to tend to their wounds? Very, very slowly.

 

Look at how 41-VEX from the Beginner Game is kitted out; a focused Colonist/Doctor can work wonders for a party that gets into frequent scuffles.

But can't you chew stim packs like candy and heal quickly that way? Unless I'm missing something... (probable...)

Stimpacks get reduced in effectiveness each time you use them (starting at 5 wounds, then 4, then 3, etc.); after the fifth, they're useless until the following day.

 

If you're going to be getting into frequent fights, someone with the Medicine skill and some healing-related talents will be a godsend (also, stimpacks cost money!; a skill check is free).

A Healing-focus character isn't as useful in EotE as they might have been in the d20 system, but they can still come in handy, particularly when it comes to treating major damage, such as critical injuries, which stimpacks do nothing to alleviate.

 

There's also the fact that the Doctor specialization has some pretty neat talents that aren't focused entirely on Healing, with Pressure Points allowing a medic to inflict some nasty damage with a high Medicine skill rank as a for-instance.

Critical hits being healed once per in-game week also means you want a specialist making those checks for you.

 

It really depends on your GM, if they're not enforcing any form of healing timing, item rarity or economy in your game then it does reduce the usefulness of the Doctor career/Medicine Skill.

 

I have more of a late game Doctor in a Skype game (he's actually a Wookie Doctor/Marauder) and the synergy between the two careers is immense. Pressure Points, Anatomy Knowledge and Stim Application are great damage buffs. Plus if anyone gets messed up (typically himself) he's there to patch up the wounded.

Doctors / Medics aren't exactly the same party role as they were in the three d20 versions of Star Wars.  They can restore wounds and help cure critical injuries of course.  But they also allow for body modification, disease/malady control, critical hit abatement, chemical restraint, and (in my games during the Beta at least) cocktails of experimental dru...medicine that mainstream society isn't ready for.

 

A dedicated "hit point healer" as a character build or concept is probably not going to be as utilized or fun to play in EotE.  However when a character gets shot or stabbed in a truly bad way (where parts of their insides are now on their outside), or come down with a case of Verpine Chitin Weevils®...A doctor / medic is going to be the first person / droid they'll cry to their mommies for.

Doctors with Pressure Point and Anatomy Lessons... I say no more. Sure its not actually healing, but if I remember correctly the more ranks in Medicine the more damage... Eh! :ph34r:
