For New Players

10 posts in this topic

For players who want to get into games that have been around for awhile and have accumulated quite a few different packs, like LOTR or COC, where should you start after the core set?

Thanks.

Depends on what you want to do. If you like to experiment or are the one to supply the cards to your gaming group then the larger “expansions” are probably better than the smaller packs. If you are trying to build to play against people with their own decks then try to figure out what faction or strategy you want and look into what cards would help you get what you want then look specifically for those packs.

It depends on the game. For a Game of Thrones, the deluxe expansions are a great place to start, as they provide a nice injection of cards for one particular faction, along with a bunch of useful neutral ones. Most of them also include sample decklists. They are, however, focused on one faction, so if you need to balance things out between a number of different factions, you'll need to get the deluxe boxes for each of those. If you want to expand more evenly and in smaller steps, just pick one cycle and get the packs for that one, as there will usually be a little more synergy between cards in one cycle than between cards from different cycles.

For Lord of the Rings, you'll want to start with the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle before you get into any other expansions, because the scenarios for that cycle built upon the cards in the core set. Each deluxe expansion introduces new sets of encounter cards, which are then used by the scenarios of the adventure pack cycle that follows it. Khazad-Dum and the Dwarrowdelf cycle go hand in hand, and so on.

I haven't played CoC, so I can't really comment on that game.

Cardgamedb.com is an excellent resource, you can find articles for new players, expansion pack reviews and purchasing recommendations, and database for all the expansions and the cards included in them for all LCGs.

For Call of Cthulhu I would suggest getting the Core set, then Secrets of Arkham.  Eventually you'll want a second Core, but if you want to grab some asylum packs first that's fine too.  In particular I'd get The Shifting Sands as it has the most recent set of story cards.  Pretty soon Terror in Venice will be out which is another "equal cards for everyone" box so that will probably be a good option.  There are faction-specific boxes too, but that only helps if you like that particular faction.

A single core set. Buy whatever expansions(there are 7) you want and a second core set if you want to.

Check cardgamedb to see what cards come in what packs. That way you can buy for your faction of choice.Netrunner is new so just buy what is in stock if specific packs you want aren't in stock.

That is plenty to start with. Sounds like you ordered everything. There's only 6 data packs, core and creation and control anyway. The factions in C&C are in the core set too. You can play any identity you want from all of that stuff.

That's plenty to play with. A good way to start playing is use the Core set decks, then organize your cards in the expansions by faction/neutral corp/runner to help start deck building.

There's a full listing of available and future releases on BoardGameGeek. Creation and Control does come with two decklists, but I've heard that they aren't very good. I didn't try them, I just used the cards to augment my existing decks. You're going to be swamped with cards once you get all that stuff. What I would do is play the core set, and then, once you have a good feel for that, dive into the expansions. Or, if you can't wait to use all those cards you have, find some good decklists online, copy those, and then build from there. Fortunately, FFG is posting all of the winning decks from the Plugged-in Tour, so you could start with those.
