When are titles chosen in melee?

Plot cards are revealed.

The player with the highest initiative choses the first player.

What comes right after that? Do the players chose their titles or will the "when revealed" effects of the plot cards be resolved first like chosing an opponent you cannot declare challenges against?

While not clear in the Core Set rules, people were instructed to choose titles before resolving plots (though after choosing First Player) at the Gencon Melee event last year. It adds a dimension to the plot phase if you know who you support and oppose before resolving plots.

 I posted this question to prove a friend to be wrong but now I am surprised

If you look at the core set rules step 1 is revealing plot cards and step 2 is selecting titles. I thought "when revealed" means as soon as possible, immediately 

, at once...

 

One thing I do not like about the game is that it makes me feel like a lawyer.

 

Is there anything that could be done to ease the pain for new players?

Wow I didnt know that we choose tites before we resolve When revealed efects...guess we did it wrong all the time too...

Well, the thing to remember is that since "when revealed" creates a passive effect, "as soon as possible" means when you would normally resolve passive effects, which is not the same thing as "at once." I mean, "at once" would mean before determining First Player, wouldn't it? So it's not uncommon for things to take place between the activating event and the actual initiation of a passive effect.

The biggest thing to be done is to stop sweating the small details. This particular detail, for example. Unless you are going to play competitively with people outside your play group, it really doesn't matter whether you choose Titles before or after resolving plot text. That's why I answered the original question in terms of what people were instructed to do during a national tournament.
