I need a deck…

to beat the  Dol Guldur scenario Solo? Oh, what's that?…oh, you say it can't be done? Oh…

 

If this is the case, that totally blows. Does anyone have a deck I could use to beat the Dol Guldor, maybe atleast give me a 50/50 shot?

I read some other posts about this and the consensus is that it's a 2 player scenario, end of story.

i have played this game since core release and only won guldur when a couple of friends came over last month and we played 3 player and won…….i think that says it all

the thing is that the random luck of who gets captured can really screw with your chances

i wont give a deck.. as being honest, well i cant…but i do think some have done it, so i wouldnt say its impossible, its just a terribly designed solo quest

Yea, me too. Only with two or three players I was able to beat it. Starting with two heroes at the threat of 3 is terrible.

Without support from other players you will cramble fast.

I wish they'd errartad this quest for soloers with something like:

When your hero gets captured, reduce your threat by his threat cost. When your hero escapes, raise your threat by his threat cost.

 I will do like rich, i will not make you a deck.

 

I advise you to try and make your own deck.

 

If you can't or don't want, try a search in cardgamedb.com that you certainly find some…

 Is this quest more possible solo if you go single sphere? Spirit or Lore, for example? I've never tried it, but it could give you the flexibility that can be taken from you by the captured hero.

 I've been thinking the same thing as Monkeyrama.  If you built a single sphere deck, the prisoner wouldn't effect you… as much.  It would still be near impossible, but I think it would give you more flexibility.  Or you could even make it a double sphere, just with songs or Narvi's Belt, but have all the same color heroes.

Dol Guldur solo still is the most challenging quest.

I have attempted the solo scenario more than 100 times with many decks.

 

There are a few decks that can tackle the 50 % winning rate. Here is one (I am at 11 victories for 20 attempts with it):

 

Aragorn (Lore)

Glorfindel (Spirit)

Beravor

 

Allies (21)

Henamarth Riversong 1

Arwen Undomiel 2

Bofur (spirit) 2

Northern tracker 3

Erebor hammersmith 3

Gandalf (core) 3

Faramir 1

Warden of healing 2

Master of the Forge 1

Rivendell Minstrel 3

 

Events (9)

A test of will 3

Daeron's runes 3

Sneak attack 3

There are many combinations in this deck but most of them are straightforward. With 4 songs, 3 minstrels, Celebrian's stone and a strong drawing power you can usually find a way to have the resources you need and abuse most of the game best cards and combinations. A variation around this deck is actually also one of the strongest competitor in the 'one deck to rule them all' contest.

 What sets do you need to build that deck? Took a lot of time off frustrated with this game (I suck at it) but wanting to give it another go!

 I have managed to beat dol guldur solo twice, out of (probably) dozens of attempts, and I don't mind admitting it was only doable when the encounter deck got a sub-optimal draw. Its not impossible, but it almost feels like it is. I used a lore/spirit deck with Aragorn (lore), Glorfindel (Spirit) and Frodo.

To build exactly this deck you need many expansions. I was lucky enough to get a collection including multiple core sets on Ebay - then my wife offered me the few most recent expansions.

 

But there are many very efficient decks that can be built with a more limited pool of cards.

Let me attempt to rank expansions in terms of efficiency:

- Foundations of Stone is probably the best one.

Glorfindel (spirit) is an amazing card, and he is coming with his toys in the same pack (Light of Valinor and Asfaloth). The pack also has 'Daeron's runes'

Glorfindel opens a lot of possibilities for your decks.

 

- I'd put Watcher in the water in second

Aragorn is an amazing hero, and there are a lot of very good cards in the pack: Arwen Undomiel, Legacy of Durin, Sword that was broken and Elrond's councel.

I also think you can build a very efficient dwarf deck with a few expansions like The hobbit: Over hill and under hill, Return to Mirkwood for Dain ironfoot, and Khazad-Dum

I have played this numerous times as a single player and not once beaten it.

I have only beaten it a few times 2 player when we designed two Dwarf decks to work in tandem. I think the heros were Dain, Thorin, Thalin, Ori, Nori & Dwalin.

However, I have also played this as a 5 player. I don't remember which hero's were involved but we absolutely smashed it. Loosing 1 hero out of 15 does not hurt as much as 1 hero out of 3!

So yes…. as a 1 player scenario I find it incredibly challenging and have almost given up on it. As a two player I think it is much more fun as the end can often be in sight at least. 3+ and it gets easier.
