play area size

 uick rules sheet states 2x2 foot but i have been told 3x3foot , what is the correct size of the play area ???

3X3 is the standard 100 point tournament size.

 3x3 for anything other than quick start rules. I hope they go to 4x4 for next lvl of games since he have a lot of 4x4 boards at my LGS.

TOs are allowed to change the standard setup, so long as it is announced in advance of the tournament, per this from Page 2 of the Tournament Rules:

If a TO cannot or chooses not to comply with the recommended setup, he must inform all players of the
alternate play area well in advance of the start of the tournament.

I will likely be running all the events I run on 4x4 because we have that size table covers at my FLGS.

You may want to add more time to your tournament since you are adding another 7 square feet of playing space.  4x4 is almost twice as much space as the recommended 3x3.  Maybe you should just mark off a 3x3 area for tournaments before uping it to 4x4.

We've been playing most of our games on 4x4 already and will probably add 15 minutes to the game time for tournaments.  Although so far at 100 points, we haven't had any trouble finishing in 75 mintues, even with the increased size.

3x3 also gets the game into a Dogfight faster, and where the play gets interesting.

 

4x4 is nice, but if you have both sides heading at each other as slow as possible exhanging shots it can make the game pretty boring and more about dice rolling as you have an extra 2+ rounds of both sides of the ships just exchanging long range shots.

 

I would even say the iniative values would be more important at the 4X4 breakdown because of the few extra rounds of volley fire.

I play Dawn Patrol/Fight in the Skies, a WWI air combat game, and in tourneys, we start the game with a tourney box, which is smaller than the large play area (undefined), game play has to stay in the tourney box for "x" turns usually 2-3 turns if I remember. I could see the same with Xwing, start with the 3x3 board but after turn 4 (my best guess for number of turns,  have not tried this yet) move to the 4x4 board. This should keep the game time down, and allow for serious "dog fighting" and keep things interesting. My .002

 At my FLGS, we have been playing on 4x4 or 4x6. How ever, we deploy 2 range bands in, which about evens the time to firing with out adding to many minutes to play.
