Lair of the Wyrm

43 posts in this topic

So this is unexpected, already have our first expansion announced, and it looks like it has a little bit of everything in it, new monsters, classes, heros, quests, OL class, etc..

Not quite a full new campain as in the base game, but a new one none the less, and it can be used in conjunction with the base game, which i think is neat

I can't tell if it's a new quest or not.  I don't see any new quest sheets, so how do you track the new quests as part of the campaign?  And where on the map are they located?  Hopefully there's a new map with new locations on the back of the Lair quest book.

So it says it has, what, 5 new quests I think? In any case I believe they are a linear quest line, if they are done on their own that is.

The Rumor cards will likely take care of that, although it's possible a map will be available. Only 2-3 quests will be available in any campaign however.

What I wonder is if you choose to do one of these new side-quests, will it be in addition to the 9 campaign quests, or will it replace one of those?

is this it?

Seriously i hope this is not going to be 40€ because I am not going to buy this then.
All the 1st edition expansions were 10 times this! Seriously wtf? 2 hero's? 2 monsters ?????

Ok I can understand this if you take into account for players with the conversion kit, but people like me don't have that.

So I am hoping that this is just a very small expansion for 20€ or dollars w/e. Otherwise this would be bull.

but it's more than that.

it's 3 new classes,5 new quests with a new system,a new lieutenant….and others stuffs.

everything is more complex than the v1 expansion and the "just add lot of minis with basic quests that use it" idea.

you can't compare extensions from the v1 and the v2.

and the price seems to be 35 dollars.

Yup, 35 dollars.

It features about half of the contents of previous expansions for Descent, but that's alright. Easier to playtest, comes out faster, cheaper to buy.

From what I raid on the official home page that the new quests originate from rumors and stay until played. If played, it'll be taken as 1 of 3 Act 1 quests opening 2 new quests for Act 2…. presumably.

I'm not exactly surprised that D2e is getting expansions, and I am excited by the prospect of additional content, although I have to say I'm a bit worried about how quickly this came out.

D1e suffered from massive issues with rules conflicts and printing errors, all of which lead to the impression that FFg was more concerned with pumping out material and less concerned with making sure it was GOOD.  Now we're getting expansions before the game is even half a year out the door?  I'm very worried that this is the beginning of a long and messy decline for the Descent franchise.

I still intend to buy the base game (I haven't even had time to do that yet!) but I won't be picking up this expansion until I see some assurances from other buyers that it's well balanced and well-printed.

I seriously wanted to see FFG slow down and take their time with new D2e expansions; to make sure we got quality instead of quantity.  Time will tell if they've procured some magic wand to let them do both, I suppose.  My biggest hope now is that D2e was actually finished a long time ago (and just held back by production issues) and that this expansion was actually developed in the year or so it took them to put the base box on shelves.

Very very much agreed. I just got the base game and instantly new expansion was announced. I'm not in hurry to play or anything, but it can get quite overwhelming for new players. And considering that there's apparently lot of problems with the base game (while waiting for FAQ…), I believe FFG has some basic improvements to do before going full out with expansions.

I don't think FFG rushes thing too much.

Look at the date Descent 2.0 was announced, that was nearly one year ago.

If production takes 6-12 month you can suppose this expansion is already done and they already started working on the next one.

I know it might not be that great to skip community feedback at all, but it's just the way business works.

If they would start development of the new expansion now, we would have to wait way longer until we get new stuff.

I'll be buying this one (of course). I guess with the expansion I was hoping for more classes. At least 4, one for each archatype and forego the heros and monsters. I'm good with the conversion kit to keep things interesting.

I welcome any new expansion for the 2nd edition. Because at it's current state it's just meh.

So yeah, please bring 10 or more expansions for the 2nd edition in the next couple years so i can build my own campaign with 2nd edition bits since the campaign rules are just too simple (very boring for my group). I need something big like Road to the Legend.

Oh and hopefully, after 4 - 6 expansions they still think about us, the hardcore gamers who just need a big campaign only expansion like road to the legend.

This would be possible with the 2nd edition as well.

Until then i will play alot more 1st edition than the 2nd :/

This expansion must have been developed and playtested with the base game. Besides some new mechanics that we cannot grasp yet (perhaps there's something more than Rumors), the content looks like extra stuff to expand the base game (new quests, new heroes/monsters, new Hero classes, new Overlord Class, new encounter cards, a new Condition, etc…). I don't see how this could not merge seamlessly with the base game and make the Descent 2nd Edition base set a little more like 1st edition base set.

The only thing I do not understand is why there are only 2 Heroes and new classes for only 2 Archetypes. This is going to upset balance between Archetypes, leaving Healers and Scouts a step behind the others. I do not understand how FFG could think this is just fine, unless they have another expansion with 2 more Heroes/classes on the way. I think expanding selective portions of the game is not a good idea.

It is probably a sale thing, so that we want to buy this and the upcoming expansion, which should includ a Scout and Healer class. It could also be that they planned to make a bigger expansion first, but felt that some parts were incomplete or didn't function as they wanted so instead of makeing an expansion with some stuff that is broken or feels out of place, they releas it later so they get more time to fix it. Also I like that they make smaller expansions, so the fans can get new material more often and with smaller expansions it doesn't change how the game play, as radicaly as a big box might.

Having had more time to read the blurbs…I like this direction.  I can see 2-3 of these smaller sized expansions a year, adding a few new heroes and monsters, and adding an optional quest line that can be added into any other major quest.  And once a year, release a quest expansion, containing a whole new epic quest.  It's probably more than I can budget in, but I think it expands the 2.0 system at a reasonable rate.
