Lycanthropic Monk vs Warhorse Mounted Character

We recently had a Monk get hit with Lycanthopy.  He landed on a character who had a warhorse, as a result the two were close in power.  There was a disagreement at the table about if the warhorse would be discarded if the character lost the battle and the resulting roll on the Werewolf Chart resulted in a loss of life .  The reasons for and against are below.

If the character looses a life on the werewolf chart it was as a result of the battle, hence the loss of life is causing the warhorse to be discarded.

The loss of life from the roll is a separate event outside of the battle as such it does not cause the warhorse to be discarded.

 

We would like to get other views on this to help us judge this situation.

It's the second option. The loss of life is caused by the Werewolf, not as the result of the battle.
