Fury Preserves Us

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am that type who rely like to use the normal rules, I expect from the game designers to be aware of the game balance so we can use all books what we have.

I just got the Jerico reach and was totaly suprised with the new tactics, especialy because of the Fury Preserves Us.

Do I read this correctly, it will give all marine a forcefield WP -10 rating; or rank 4+ WP rating?

If yes this is the most powerfull tactics ever, and will push the psykers into the boss category. Cost is 1 cohesion and sustained so u do not have to buy it again and again; is it a joke?

The black templar tactical marine will be close to immune to all kind of damage - 75 willpower +10 wp from oath. 85 forcefield and 95 percent psy immunity from abhor of the witch.

Please add your comment, because currently I have to hide this book from the others...

You're overlooking that all of the fields go down when one of them overloads. Even at high rank, that's a 5% chance for *every* incoming attack that a killteam member hasn't outright avoided through dodge or parry. It's good, but it's not so good that other options aren't worth looking at it, my acid test for whether I think something is broken or not.

Yes that is right, it goes down sometime, but it is a free action to put it back and cost nothing.

I guess they wanted it not sustainable, it would make sense for a free action to use and the very low cost. To be honest it would be still very powerfull.

Currently it is better than any other forcefield including the relic ones, as the field rating is much better. It is no brainer to use this tactick in all situation all the time.

Where are you getting the idea that the fields go back up as a free action? I don't see that anywhere. From what I'm reading, they're gone once one is. So it's one cohesion a pop. And I totally disagree that the ability is a "no-brainer". By rank 6, marines should have easy access to fields between the shields and iron halos. A marine can stave off lots of incoming damage by killing the enemies before they get a chance to strike. Say with repeated use of "furious assault"+jump packsand still have fields as an equipment option.

Sustained tacticks cost nothing to reactivate after the first activation.

That means the leader can put the barrier back with a single leadership roll.

I dont know how do you handle requisition points but iron halo and the other forcefields are far from easy to get in my game and cost huge requisit.

In my team the rosarios was a big deal to aquire; and noone was good enough to get the iron halo yet.

Not to mentioned they do not have 85 field rating.

I just checked the elda forcefield, it has 75 rating, so seems this field is not unbeatable, but still too powerfull for a tactic.

How can I ask developers what was the main goal with this tactick?

There is nothing in the description saying the force fields come back up so I interpret it as the ability is finished with and has to be brought back in. One cohesion point for force fields that can be brought back with a free action for the rest of the mission? That *is* too good.

Yes, force fields are hard to requisition. But you're pulling out late game figures for willpower, unless low ranked characters favour willpower over stats that will actually help them survive combat. At the ranks where willpower is sensibly maxed out, force fields are generally a lot easier to come by.

Look to the "rules questions" link at the bottom of the forum pages. And if you get a reply, feel free to post it here.

Thank You; I will try to ask them.

About the reactivation, this is a tactick what provide a forcefield if the theam use it. For me this means if u activaite it all marine have the shield.

Like strong point; mark a place; use the tactick, move use it again, it will cost nothing to reestablished 2nd time only a command roll.

Yes willpower is not easy to get; but some class will improve it for sure, this is why the libs and the deffensive oriented tactical marine will be boss level strong.

If there is a ultramarine lib who decide to share his high wp with the party then things will get realy ugly for the enemys.

If u want all out attack yes it is not the best to use; but still most situation except suprise or against weak enemys a rank 85 party forcefield is better than any offensive tactick. If they are able to go close, a good kill team would kill a boss level enemy in 1-2 rounds; with the forcefield they will just ignore the elites, jump in, finish the boss with focus fire, clean up after.

This material has been written and tested by professional game designers. It is therefore a good rule of thumb that, when there are two interpretations of the rules, one of which gives a wildly unbalanced result and the other of which does not, the latter is the one that was intended.

Therefore, the force field doesn't go back up.

Full respect to the creators to create this very good game - realy this game is so easy to play and still very enjoyable fights...

They are still humans.

In this very book they misprinted the name of the tactics some pages later - oath rules.

So it is possible they messed up a bit, and we have something what a smart player will exploit. Its no a big problem ofc, this is where a house rules come into the play, but I like to have as few house rule as I can.

I already asked them for confirmation.

Based on the normal rules you do not have to pay 2nd time for any tactic, so if this is different they should mention it somewhere.

Not the cohesion cost is wildly unbalanced, the rank 85 forcefield is unbalanced with a 95 percent psy immunity or with a powerful lib who can hurt and focusing his wp naturaly.

You're complaining that version is broken, so why not use the alternative interpretation provided here?

Oh and Oath to the Emperor does not add +10 to willpower. It adds to Willpower checks which are not relevant to the force fields, because the force fields are just based off the Willpower stat and are *not* Willpower tests.

I think you miss some small parts,

Yes this thingie is extremly powerfull but:

The field is equall Wp-10 / WP of each seperat Marine (as stated p 27 TJR: This counts as a Force Field(...) with a Protection Rating equal to each characters WP -10; WP at Rank 4), so they are not all of same value. Second, you learn it, + all other SMAs + Oath to use it. Its still a new Codex SMA, so needs Oath to use plus everyone needs to know it or the rules for Chapter Squad Modes are used. so it is 500xp for every user plus 750 for squad leader and either the deed for Archeos Salient or at least 2 Missions in the Salient absolved before able to buy them.

And there comes the last Point: at the Moment the SMA is unusable, for no Oath exists wich allows this SMA (i would suppose Oath of Purity, as was stated here it would persumably be "Faith is our Shield", wich gives +10 or +20 WP to resist Psi (i would go with +10) and +1 TB against things with the Daemonic trait)

If fields are Rare in your Campaing, well up the costs. by what ever margin feels good, or simply disallow the package. As GM we are the final arbiters. And to be honest led them have their shiny bubbles, you will find ways to get them despite it. ^^
