Settle a Tech Argument - Automated Defense Turrets?

We can't come to a consensus on the meaning of the Automated Defense Turrets Technology and wondered what others thought as I didn't find it in the FAQ's.

Some read it that All Destroyers receive +2 and roll 1 additional die ONLY on Anti-Fighter Barrage rolls.

Some read it that Destroyers recieve +2 and on ALL combat rolls and 1 additional die on Anti-Fighter Barrage rolls, hence giving Destroyers +3 on all combat rolls when combined with Hylar Assault Laser.

So who is right?

Both parts only apply to Anti-Fighter Barrage rolls.

Look at in from this perspective.  Take off the "and roll 1 additional die on all Anti-Fighter Barrage rolls".  What do you have left?

"All of your Destroyers receive +2".  +2 what?  Without the "Anti-Fighter Barrage" qualifier, the +2 is meaningless.  It could mean "+2 to combat rolls", "+2 to movement", "+2 votes", "+2 resources", "+2 Trade Goods".

As such, gramatically, the only thing the +2 CAN apply to is Anti-Fighter Barrage rolls.  Combat Rolls aren't even mentioned on the card :)

Actually, Anti-fighter rolls are a TYPE of combat roll.  IE, All AFB rolls are combat rolls, but not all combat rolls are AFB rolls.  Thus, Hylar V does apply to AFB.  ADT gives AFB even MORE potency.  Shattered Empires was partly about nerfing fighters, because in the base set, Fighters often become the central focus of many fleets.

Per the FAQ, a Combat Roll is any roll of the dice where you compare the roll to a unit's combat value.  This means the following would be combat rolls:

  • Space Battle ship rolls
  • Pre-Combat ship rolls, including Anti-Fighter Barrage
  • Invasion Combat rolls
  • Bombardment rolls
  • PDS Fire

The following would NOT be combat rolls:

  • Space Mines (mines are not units, and do not have combat values)
  • Sabotage Runs (you aren't comparing the rolls to a unit's combat value)
  • Gen Synthesis and Dacxive Animator rolls (you aren't comparing the rolls to a unit's combat value)
  • Ancient Artifact roll (again, no combat value)

I can find the entry in the FAQ if you want; I think it's actually on the first page, but I'd have to look.

I'm going with Sigmazero13 on this one. Page one of FAQ defines combat roll as he stated. Therefore:

Hylar V Assault Laser gives +1 for Destroyers and Carriers, so:

Anti-Fighter Barrage would hit on 8's

Automated Defense Turrets give +2 and an additional die only on AFB, so:

Anti-Fighter Barrage would hit on 6's and roll 3 dice for each destroyer.

After the AFB, they will only hit on 8s again.

You ment cruiser right not carriers??
