4 Questions and a Query

Recommended Posts

1. Bones of a Child

Can bones of a child be used by the defending player against an attacking player after he has won the challange but before he has satisfied the claim ?

More of a timing question really.

2. Blood of a Dragon

What is Dragon Trait, we assumed it was the stealth that all dragons seem to posses, but I'm not sure as there trait is just Dragon.

3. Deadly

What happens in a 50/50, ie attack has 1 deadly and participating defender has 1 deadly.

4. Can a kneeling card use its text, ie "pay 2 gold to choose......etc etc.

Query

Why does the Greyjoy and Martell expansion have other houses cards in them, Im assuming they cant use them for there own House. So does that mean I can have the Stark card in the Greyjoy box or can the Greyjoy player somehow use the Stark card ?

No.  The FAQ & Timing Flow Charts show that Player Actions need to be executed BEFORE the winner of the challenge is determined, and that there is no window between determining the winner and implementing the result.

It is not Stealth.  Dragon is  trait, just like Item, Creature, Lord, Lady, Ally, Army and others.  There are other cards that affect card with the Dragon trait, like Qartheen Fanatic, Dragon Bite, and Dance With Dragons.

Nothing.  Deadly only matters if the Attacker has more Deadly characters than the Defender.

Yep.  Kneeling only affects challenges, dominance, or text that says, "Kneel this character to do something."  Kneeling is how you pay the cost to do some actions.  In the case you mentioned, Paying 2 Gold is how you pay that cost.  Kneeling doesn't matter.

You may use out-of-house cards if you pay the Gold Penalty when Marshalling them (2 Gold).  My guess is that those cards are in the expansions so that people who aren't interested in Greyjoy or Martell will still buy them happy.gif

1. If you haven't already done so, do check out the FAQ (link in my signature) as it contains a detailed description of the game's timing structure. If it doesn't answer your question or you have trouble figuring it out, let us know.

2. You are confusing traits and keywords. Have another look at the core set rulebook, pages 4 ff. Traits are the words printed in bold italics right under a cards illustration. So the Dragon trait is exactly that: Dragon

3. What happens is exactly what happens if the attacker has 0 participating deadly characters. Deadly only takes effect if the attacker controls more Deadly characters in a challenge than the defender.

4. Unless the cost of a card's ability is kneeling itself, you can use it's ability anytime, provided its other play restrictions are met.

5. Well, there's nothing to prevent you from using a card from one house in a deck played with a different house card (unless the card says "House X only")-- that's what the out-of-House penalty is for. However, the inclusion of those out-of-House cards is more of a bonus to players playing a house other than Martell/Greyjoy.

Thanks, we sort of knew that it couldnt be stealth as a it is a keyword, but we couldnt understand the benefit in gaining just the trait of a dragon.
We haven't come across that out of house penalty yet, could be because were all still playing with the core sets.

I have the big PDF rule book being printed out and laminated, seems so awkward using the laptop to access it.

Cheers

The out-of-House penalty is described in the Core Set rule book, page 12, as part of "Phase 3: Marshalling."

Keep in mind, though, that there is an action window after defenders are declared and before the challenge is resolved. You can usually tell who is going to win in that window, so while you cannot use Bones of a Child after the winner is determined, you can effectively use it just before the winner is determined - to pretty much the same result as "wait to see who is going to win the challenge before choosing to lower the claim value."
