By saying "When revealed, the opponent to your left chooses 1 Lord and 1 Lady character, if able," the card is saying you must choose 2 targets. As with every other effect in the game (such as 2-claim military challenges), any time you need to choose 2 or more targets, they must be different targets. You cannot satisfy the requirements of "choose 2 targets" with just 1 character.

I really dislike this explanation. 

I just feel that it is not a very convincing one. The reference to "other" in the later part of the Red Wedding's text makes for a better explanation, IMO.
