Appropriate Penalties

Hey everyone, I got the core rulebook and beyond dreams book about 2 weeks ago now. It got me interested enough right off the back that decided I wanted to GM (no experience from other games, but I'm not really here about that. ^^)

You'll know who I'm talking about if you've read the beginning of the 'beyond dreams' book (trying to avoid potential plot spoilers for others, btw ^^), but what do you guys think my be the appropriate penalties on core characteristics for a 13 year old, female character? I'm going to be rolling her stats special anyway, but I'm wanting to get the input of others on what characteristics should have a 'age penalty' that will eventually go away.

Ok, I know what 13 years old youngster you're talking about...and YES you have to roll her special (if she is who I believe her to be). First, she will have far more than a couple points of powerful enemies...She's a 3rd level Learning (no doubt about it). I'd say she's pretty Unfortunate all considered, or she might have some Curse on her (see the GM toolkit). She should also have aptitude to Subterfuge and/or natural learner...because otherwise you'd spend too many points for disguise (which she must have pretty high, doesn't she?). She might also have Code of Conduit, considering her upbringing and even a couple of Dirty Little Secrets. If it were any 13 years old female (or even male) character, anything like Physical Weakness/Exhausted/Vulnerable to Pain/Weakling (GM toolkit) would be ok, but if she is the girl I believe her to be...not so much. At most you might buy her a -2 to Str and Con, but again considering her particular nature and upbringing, I don't believe it to be very appropriate. If she's not the one I believe, then go with the previously described (Weakling gives 1CP and inflicts -30 all action penalty if her HP fall to 1/3 of her total). If she's not who I believe her to be, you may even give her Severe Phobia, Cowardice (grom GM toolkit), Clumsy (from GM toolkit), Deep Sleeper, Slow Learner, Unattractive...there are plenty which could be fitting for an average 13 years old female (just think about all those 13 years old females you met in your life...just joking).

Lol, But yes, it's definitely who your thinking of. And I'm glad I didn't decide to roll her yet. I'm still waiting on the GM toolkit I ordered to come in (I'm expecting it within the next day at a minimum.)

But thanks on the input. ^^ I'm just imagining that because of her age, she should have those temporary penlites, even with how well she was trained. ^^ It's all things I'm seeing that will go away as she gets older, not that she isn't already going to have nice stats to begin with (and then we have those points she'll get for leveling up. Lol.)

If it's an NPC, then you don't roll for stats, you them. Big difference, especially since you want to decide what are her strengths and weaknesses.

And might I suggest that you give her a relatively high level? As a central character to the plot of the game, you'll want her to be better than most NPCs, and possibly better than the PCs. As for class, I would suggest Paladin, as it has the combination of combat and social skills she needs to have (since she has been trained by the heaven order...). Also, I would limit penalties to her STR and END, perhaps AGI and DEX slightly, but not her intellectual characteristics, and especially not WP or POW.

She starts off as a Level 7 Paladin, of course, but considering her "growth rate" the GM should take into account the fact that if, for example, the players meet her after a couple years (in game) from the beginning of their adventures, she'll probably be a level 9 or 10 by then. Consider she's the human being with highest Gnosis ever to be born...take that into account. I know young human females should have physical weakness penalties, but she's simply more (a lot more) than average human. She's not going to be Str10 or Con10, but an healthy 7 should be fine with her. Remember to get her Natural Learner and Aptitude to Subterfuge...otherwise she wouldn't be able to go around like she's used to. I'm going to roll her very soon for my own campaign (I don't think my players are meeting her anytime soon, but I'm rolling anyway all "big guys" in the setting, just to make sure I have them ready for when the time comes in this campaign or in any future one). If you want, after I've rolled her I can send you friend request and share with you the fruit of my work. Since I also have access to the Book on Ki Dominion (still unprinted in English) there might be something "strange" but you'll only need to ask if it's so. Also, since I've already rolled a few "big ones" I can share them, if you're interested, of course by PM.

That sounds like an awesome idea actually. I've actually got this convoluted plan where once I get nice and comfortable running one campaign, trying another simultaneous one within the same world. I'd base each set around another major character, and all depending on how the players act, it could really effect the setting and the world.

And yea, I was thinking of when I rolled her of using the 1st method of stat rolling, just increasing the re-roll to 6 or less instead of 3 or less. Given that, and applying a few temporary penalties that would affect her height, over time these would disappear as she got older and she would grow in all the physical sense. ^^

I mean, I've got the right idea at least, yes?

Yes, that's a good idea as far as ideas go, but I'd increment her mental characteristics even above 10 (especially Power and Willpower should be ubelievably high).

Don't roll her stats...just create them. I'd go for Str6, Dex10, Agi 10, Con7, Int11, Pow13, Wil13, Per10. Appearance should be something like 7, taking into account not everyone in the world is a lolicon (despite the setting being Jap-oriented) and might increase with due time (she might gain 1 point once she's 15-16 and another once she gets 18-20).

She's like that in my mind...for now...Of course her size is 13...is 5" too high for a girl that age? If so, adjust it with a "free" Uncommon Size that will disappear with due time. Considering she travels a lot alone it's probable that her appearance is that of an at least 15 years old girl (in a medievil/fantasy setting that age is ok to do almost anything), by the way: otherwise she'd be completely bothered for being too young to go around on her own and stuff... So despite her age being 13 you might consider she's a bit overgrown. Again, she's a very strange and out of standard person: take this into account.

But no, I think the Idea you have with her height is about right. To be honest, I've got the idea that her main trainer has been secretly pushing her toward inhumanity. Unless, do you think she should already have it? Maybe make a special rule so she can fully take advantage of her mental capabilities? The level of inhumanity that she's being pushed toward could be for her physical capabilities  once she gets older, I'm thinking. (I'm just following the idea that the core rulebook has for slow progress in learning ki abilities. I'm sure he doesn't want to disfigure the poor child by unlocking the ability too early in her development, you know?)
