As a relative newbie to the game, can I just check if I've got this right?

"Basic" action cards - everyone gets them provided they meet the requirements on the card. In other words, Orcs get "Parry" just like PCs.

"Standard" action cards - creatures get them where applicable (e.g. Orcs get "greenskin" standard action cards).

Excluding some cards which are free for wizards and priests, everything else is extra. In other words, PCs must buy them with creation/advance points and the GM must allocate them for NPCs/Creatures to add variety to each encounter?

The only problem I see with the above is that there are only 3 sets of "basic" action cards in the core set, so not really enough to run an encounter with 3 PCs versus several NPCs/Creatures. How do you handle this?

Easiest way is to go here:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=93&esem=4

Print the Basic Action Reference.  All the basic actions are the same on Conservative and Reckless stance, so the one sheet covers you.  Cut and sleeve with old garbage commons from a CCG (you know you have some!).  Ta da!

Or, if you need duplicates of other cards you can grab a Player's Vault, which gives you 3 more sets of basic actions and one more of every other player card from the Core set.

Print the Basic Action Reference..

Thanks for the link, I can see that "Basic Actions Referece" being really useful to a GM. You might not even need to cut them out, given that the "Active Defence" cards can be used on alternate turns (recharge 2) and the remaining 5 out of 8 can be used every turn. You could just laminate the sheet and use it as a play aid. As long as you remember that creatures/NPCs you control can't use the same active defence on consecutive turns, everything should be fine.

FFG's editing department is on form as usual though; "Assess the Situation" has "æ" and "¬¬" place-holder text on it, which took me literally minutes to spot. Come on FFG! Call me picky if you like but for a company that specialises in high quality components, you'd think they could get it right for a single sheet of 8 cards on their own website. :(. Rant over!

Hey,

I have the sheet and none of those characters appear on my version.  Are you using Acrobat to open the PDF?  I have IE and the latest Acrobat Reader, and the card looks fine.

How odd! I've looked again and the card looks correct now, both in Acrobat Reader and Firefox. Not sure how it got corrupted before but it was definitely showing incorrectly. Never mind - apologies to FFG!
