I just got the game....

Recommended Posts

Yup rather addicting.

Think of fist person shooter meets board game.

But if you just play the same type of game over and over it gets dull just like everything (or about everything) mix it up with capture the falg, story, scenarios, kill 'em all, etc.

I sure hope so. I just picked up a copy at a boxing day sale for 36.00. mostly a blind purchase, saw some pics, skimmed over the rules a little quite a while ago, and Now I'm not too sure I made the right purchase. I'm kinda let down after first look. Almost willing to put it up for a trade right away. I hate the thought of that tho, so I'm going to give it a try.

The setting is really cool, but dosen't seem like too much depth there. I'm not too sure about the Story mode, seems kinda tacked on.

But I'm going to give it a go and hopefully the things that grabbed you guys grabs me too.

Not sure what let you down after you looked inside the box, it's a very good looking game with components of a much higher quality than most mini games.

It does also allow for a fair degree of customization (characters, equipment packs, game modes) so I can't agree that it lacks depth.

The complaints I have read is that it does not play like a straight Skirmish game. This is true, as it is a more of a miniatures and boardgame hybrid.

Story Mode is too fiddly for me. We mostly play Domination Mode where you must claim 4 Objectives without the Skill requirements. We have played games where the Objectives have been strategically claimed without devolving into a mindless kille'em all.

Good Luck!

I too just got the game - it was a trade that someone wanted and I was willing to pick it up.  A few things though from this newbie to Tannhäuser:

1.  The rules for story game set up are not that clear.  How does one determine if they are going to go after two major objectives and one minor vs. two minor and a major?  What if both want to go after the same type of objective?  The sad part is that I read rules for a living and I will say these got me a bit befuddled.

2.  I also would like a bit more on the suggestion above to go to dominion mode instead of story mode.

3.  We also got the Yula charachter which was a great addition, but there were no d10s.  So, how many of those do I need to go acquire is six for each side sufficient.

4.  Finally, for the "first time player" which game mode is the best to play to work through the rules?

Lots of newbie things - sorry for that and I tried to find a main FORUM discussion for newbie stuff but no such luck.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the game ritterton,

1. It depends on which map you choose to play on: The castle has 4 major objectives and 2 minor objectives. The crypt has 2 major objectives and 4 minor objectives. In Story Mode you make a Setup Roll, the player that wins randomly selects a major objective and places that token on the matching space (some objectives do not appear on every board - discard and draw again*). Taking turns, the players place first all the major objectives, and then all the minor objectives. See page 15 C.2 "How Do I Make A Setup Roll?", in the rulebook.

2. In Domination Mode when you reach an objective, you place a Flag Token on the space. Once you place the fourth Flag Token, you win. See page 15 B.4 "What Is Domination Mode?".

3. The most dice you ever need are 7. I have a total of 10 black (Attack Rolls) and 10 white (Shock Rolls) that we use.

4. If you are just starting, the most important thing is to understand how all the equipment works. I recommend Domination Mode or Capture The Flag Mode. Story Mode does add complexity, but there is more to keep track of, and it tends to slow things down. Death Match only has one way of winning, so it may feel a little aimless for some players.

Hope that helps.

*You could also make a pool of only the objectives that appear on the map, before you start drawing. Discard the rest.

Wonderful responses.  I appreciate helping me understand what are some oddly worded rules imho.  Thank you.  Your description makes a bit more sense for story mode.  I guess I read it as something you had to figure out to make a story tale work.

Also, appreciate the suggestions about capture the flag and domination.

Now to order dice!  :=)  Let's see black with red letters for the Reich, and Blue with White for the Union???  LoL

Well, the dice arrived and then I had to go out of town.  Then a few other things, but today the game box was opened, the big table cleared and we sat down to play our first game.

Now the wee - or we - was my seven year old, my eight year old, and dad as the moderator/rule consultant.

First, it takes about an hour for us to set up - or me setting up the board, putting tokens down (capture the flag), helping each with their characters, then we had a call, dinner etc...

We got to playing and it took us about two hours to sort through rules and such.  But, it started becoming pretty intuitive as to what you needed to do. My eight year old even started grabbing dice as her brother's Union forces beat up on her heroes.  There were some pretty scary combos the little guy happened to pick and then had the best dang dice roles ever.  However, in the end the Reich one the day - yet all heroes had been killed and removed from the board.

It was a fun game.  I really enjoyed it as we figured out the rules the stress oftrying to answer questions, figure out points, and such got less and less.

Looking forward to playing it with an adult friend or two.  So, I would say it's a good 8-9 on the 10 point scale.
