Captured Commanders

Recommended Posts

The rules provide little information about the consequences of capturing commanders:

Which of the following statements are true ?

1. Units cannot be ordered anymore playing a Command token on the captured commanders card because there is no zone of control of the commander anymore

2. The number of command tokens is not reduced (so as a funny side effect in some scenarios:  the player who lost a commander must spare command tokens  and will probably gain advantage next round) (I suggest that a player should never own more command tokens than the sum of his free commanders command limits)

3. There is no additional effect on morale to the normal effect of a unit being killed ( I feel that the loss of a command unit should have a stronger impact on morale (I suggest jumping to the next color in any case)

4. Units in the ZOC of the captured commander are not affected (i.e. stay on board to be ordered by order tokens or another commander)

Your point 2 is really interesting...

You are right when you say that a faction that lose a commander will probably win the initiative in the turns to come and that this thing seems more an advantage than a disadvantage.... But consider that the other side will be in the condition to issue a greater number of Leadership Cards for the rest of the game, so gaining the possibility of a more mobile and aggressive strategy of play.

The side with more commanders still in play has 2 options:

- issue the same number of Leadership Card of the adversary when he/she wants to try to gain the initiative (playing a conservative turn)

- lauch, when the time is right, a dangerous "crashing blow turn" playing more leadership cards than the adversary to overwhelm the enemy (accepting to lose the initiative in the next turn...).

I think it's a good tradeoff...
