Interesting Ship Names

Recommended Posts

Do any of your players out have any interesting stories behind the name of their ship?

Ours is named the Twisted Van Cook, which is the abbreviation of a Vanilla Cookie Twisted frosty from Wendy's as it appears on a reciept. Looked at the reciept, loved it, using it!

Anybody else got an interesting one?

Ship name that I've used with probably the most interesting origin for me is:

  • The Righteous Indignation; a Dauntless-class light cruiser outfitted for long-range patrol and planetary assaults.  The name was originally thiefed form the cartoon Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars, but has also appeared in the FFG story materials in the new Knowledge is Power release schedule for Dark Heresy.

We're The Queen Latifah. I don't think there was any good reason, and there's really not a lot of humor in our campaign. We keep things pretty dark. For whatever reason, though, it stuck... I've come to enjoy it, actually, and once in a while it does lighten the mood a notch when it really needs to.

My group went bold, and named our ship the Tyrant Star.  Then again, our RT is also a spin-off from our DH campaign and he had discovered he was a descendant of the Haarlocks, and has taken the name, so it seemed pretty fitting.

"Aurum Albion" Translates roughly to Land of White Gold or Golden England.  She's an Archeotech Cruiser that's been the long standing flagship for the Drake Dynasty.  Many things on and around the ship & RT are plays on Sir Francis Drake and his adventures.

When my group's Rogue Trader inherited his starship, he re-christened it The Radiant Marcia, after his mother. Afterwards, he would habitually offer to whatever woman he happened to be seducing at the moment to rename the ship after her. Eventually, the crew stopped repainting the hull, and the ship now bears the name The Radiant followed be an amorphous smear. The crew refer to the ship as The Radiant Smear, or, more casually, The Smear.

HA!  That is awesome and deliciously entertaining.

My group has named their ship the "Aesteban's Folly".

The ship rolled "Blasphemous Tendencies" and "Reliquary of Mars" as the complications. I ruled this meant it had been an experiment by a borderline heretic Mechanicus sect with tech that the mainstream Mechanicus holds to be Tech-Heresy.

The ship was bought cheap to replace serious fleet losses, then just sat in orbit being used as a makeshift void-station by transient scum as the failing fortunes of the Dynasty couldn't pay enough to get the Mechanicus to work on it. The Aesteban Dynasty was going bust, and the voidfarers in that system came to call the hulk Aesteban's Folly.

When the last scion of the Dynasty, Maccharius Aesteban, found a Fringe-Sect borderline heretic Tech-Priest (the PC Explorator) to repair it, he kept the name even after the ship was functional again.

For the game I run as a joke the RT suggested he be Sean Connery, it caught on and after much peer pressure, he decided that in fact he was Lord Sean Connery II of House Connery, with his mighty reliquary of mas sword class frigate The Highlander. His family saying if of course, "There can be only one!"

Our dynasty, the Parol dynasty is a fraud, created by the Inquisition with the help of Lord Hax to infiltrate the rogue trader community of the Koronus expanse. It thus has no real history, although it claims to be a much older and long defunct dynasty of the same name.

They captured their flagship as part of an inquisition kill team. At that time it was being used as a mobile base of operations for the Temple Tendency and was known as the Emperors Ascendency.

Once captured they renamed it the Thor's Redemption after Sebastian Thor, the man who ended the church of the Emperor Saviour and reformed the Eclesiarchy. This seemed suitably fitting for the dynasty and was a way for them to symbolically remove the heretical taint they felt it had under its previous owners.  The incredibly elaborate and beautiful cathedral mounted on the dorsal deck they kept however.

Previous to being the Emperors Ascendency. The ship was known as the Scourge of Fools and was in the hands of a powerful pirate clan. Previous to that it was the Hammer of the Warp, an Imperial Navy vessel.

Our dynasty's other ship, the Foxes Gambit takes its name from our rogue traders heraldry of a foxes head on a sunburst.

In our forth-coming campaign, Our GM has already issued a name and background for our ship. It's a Ex-Imperial Navy Sword class Frigate named Saint Katherine.

The Imperial navy fleet in our sector named each ship in a squadron of sword classes after each of the founding sister-saints of the Adeptus Soritas, and Saint Katherine was badly wounded in battle and patched up and decommisioned; wherein it was gived with a re-issued Warrent of Trade to Kalrock Vaccaro, a young, spoilt 2nd son of a minor noble house with strong ties to the issuing department of the local administratum..

In my game the players are currently on board the Purity of Malice. She is an ancient battleship and the pride, and flagship of the dynasty. The player who is the RT is not in command of the ship, his eldest brother holds the charter, as well as the skulls of the six siblings between the two brothers, all of which were found wanting by the eldest brothers standards.

The ship is currently being destroyed inside and out by several ork ships and dozens of assault boats from an ork waaagh that have landed a scattered but sizable force on board. The players were in the lower hull, as punishment from the captain, dealing with a dispute between the Benevolent Order of Air Purifies, Starboard Order, Deck 87-89 and the Brotherhood of Air Filtration, Port 86-88 over a 150 year old air filter changing rights claim. The ship is doomed, the players may be also. So far they have been able to handle themselves well and have had creative ways to deal with and avoid various situations.

All but one of the players is new to the system. So I an introducing things slowly and will eventually, if they can pull it off, let them escape and be rescued. At that point the player RT will receive the Charter and be able to build his ship.

My group currently has two ships: a frigate they named the Deus Lupe (the guy playing the RT is a massive Space Wolf fan), and a light cruiser they captured.

The light cruiser used to belong to the Fel dynasty, and was christened the Fel Deeds, but given the actions of her captain (before the PCs captured it), and the fact it had a Gilded Hull, the players renamed her the Force Majeure (which they have decided is code for massively compensating for small genitalia). It's currently being refitted to get rid of the 3km of bling attached to the hull- the ship's machine spirit will not, and does not like it (great justification for the Rebellious machine spirit it has)

In the game I'm running at the moment, the central endeavour is to find a Space Hulk that's been spotted roaming around the sub-sector and pillage the Emperor's love out of that baby. Just to make the experrience more fun for everyone, I figured I'd individually name each ship that's recoverable from the Hulk. This was obviously not something I thought about carefully before committing to.

The PCs ship is the Fata Morgana - a xenos modified Firestorm frigate with Blasphemous Tendencies and 'Xenos in Sheep's Clothing' - the group rolled Wolf in Sheeps Clothing, but we all agreed that it wasn't that interesting, so we combined that with Xenophillious under the understanding that the ship had many, many secrets it hadn't given up to its previous owners... there were d5 xenos components on board that they didn't know about at the start of the game and, thus far, they've only discovered 3... (Hrud Warp-plasma Power Grid, Eldar Mimic Engine and a Tenebro-maze, in case you were wondering... the Tenebro-maze was paticuarly fun as it was active at the start of the game with the PC group unable to work out how to turn it off)

Here's the list the PCs are getting next week, along with ship class cause I'm waay too lazy to modify it.

3 cruisers
Lunar - Unbreakable
Gothic - Divine Imperative
Murder - Harvester of Sin

4 light cruisers
Kill Kroozer - Da Gutspilla
Dauntless - Diem Mortis
Dauntless - Knight of Platea
Solaris Light Cruiser - Rhian Yael (Song of Last Fading Light)

5 frigates
Sword - Magnificent
Sword - ad/OCX9946c
Onslaught-class - Snitgrot's Supa-smasha
Falchion - Victis Imperator
Fra'al Slavebringer - Unknown Xenos Designation

3 raiders
Corsair-class raider - Daenda Khaine Kaela (The Blood of many are upon out hands)
Cobra class destroyer - Lord Korvus
Nekuli Ghostsail - Unknown Xenos Designation

7 transports
Misere's Price
Hand of Destiny
The Hanged Man
Fra'al Void-barge - Unknown Xenos Designation
Calling of Profit
Seventh Seal
Forlorn Hope

The DH gang are knocking around in a Deimos Corvette, a tiny specialist assassinorum 'covert ops' vessel awarded after a grueling campaign. The Last Rites is around 1km long, 85% of the hull is a low-pressure, freezing nightmare of inert gasses, dim lighting, full of several thousand evil looking Phobos servitors that routinely scare the **** out of them, crewed by barely a 1000 living souls and full of arcane and disturbing workings they're barely able to fathom (but will at the very least tear an arm off if they poke at some of them). It reeks of ozone, its cold, the air tastes bad, an utterly terrible place to be in for extended periods of time, crewed mostly by fanatical tech priests, some agri-world cowboys and captained by a sociopathic Necromundan noble.

Sure, it can't fight its way out of a wet paper bag, as comfortable as being kicked down a flight of stairs and raiders look positively tough-as, but they'll never see it coming and please god emperor don't let them board us... oh god, don't let us be boarded!

My group of players is flying around in "The Fearsome Darter".  The Darter is a Hazeroth class raider with an Archaotech drive, excellent sensors, and an Archaeotech bridge.  It's armed with twin Sunsear laser batteries, and generally lives up to its name.  It's incredibly fast (speed 11) and hits hard.  However, as my players have discovered, the one thing it cannot do is take much damage.  They're currently deep in the Processional of the Damned with 2 hull points remaining (this is after their extended repairs succeeded).  Things look bad for our heroes...
