Why $100?

Recommended Posts

Why does this game cost $100?

It doesn't come with anymore tokens then one of ffg's smaller boxed games

the minis are weak and flimsy. I was very disappointed with the minis. they have nice detail and everything but they are so tiny and weak.

The vast majority of the cards are the small ones and there aren't that many of these when compared to other big box games and there are very few regular sized cards.

After buying ffg's other big boxed games like Starcraft, descent and Twilight Imperium I was greatly disappointed with this games components and cost

Because they can.  And because that's the price of all their Epic Box games.

For what it's worth I definitely feel I've gotten $100 worth out of Runewars since buying it, but YMMV.

This game didn't even need the epic sized box. It probably should have been in a middle earth quest sized box. That would have fit everything fine. With the epic box there is so much empty space.

and what does YMMV mean?

YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary (IE, your experience may differ than mine).

While I think you could have fit it in a smaller box (with maybe excepting the #8 tile), I don't mind it being an epic-sized game.  Like Steve-O, I definitely feel like I've gotten every penny of the $80 I spent on it (got it at a discount).  Heck, even if I had paid $100, I'd have my moneys worth out of it - I play this game a LOT.

While there is a lot of "empty space" in the box, I feel the production quality is excellent, the sculpts and figures, while small, are top notch, and the game design overall is very well done.

I don't know "WHY" they sold it at $100, because I don't know the costs involved in developing and producing the game.  But I don't feel gypped at all.

I still maintain that all the empty space will be filled by expansions.

Most certainly.  I also feel the epic box is appropriate because Runewars is an epic experience, albiet one with fewer bits than most other contenders in the box size category.

I just checked the #8 tile and it won't fit in a Runebound-sized box (barely too big, even diagonally), which as far I know is the next biggest after the epic box.  I'm sure they could have made it a different shape and fit everything in a smaller box, but I don't lament the choice they made.

This doesn't mean I'm looking forward to a series of Epic games whose boxes are as empty as this one, mind you.  Runewars is something of a diamond in the rough that way.  I do look forward to future expansions though, at least a couple, because the box does have extra room after all. =)

Well, there's the War Of The Ring-sized box, too :)  I think there's at least a couple games that use that size?

I think completely satisfied with the game mechanics or not you have to give credit for the games contents.  The figures (other than hero reprints), and the cards all look great.  What really shines though are the tiles and the race cards.  I can't see how you could be disappointed with these pieces.  The tile art and 3D mountains allow you to create maps that far exceed appearance-wise many pre-made map boards from other games.  The race cards with dials are what many players try to accomplish when making play mats for established games.  I guess I am just not sure what more they could have put in.  Sure they could have thrown in more of the same, but where does it end?  At some point the developers have to draw a line.

My main problem is just how flimsy the miniatures are. If they made the models thicker I would have been a lot more satisfied. I feel like I'm gonna break these guys. The starcraft board game had lots of minis and they were all very solid and detailed (except for the ghost who is just as thick as a runewars model).

Also I don't think lots of play time should qualify a game for a price boost. I've got hours and hour's of play time out of my munchkin card game that doesn't mean I want to pay anymore for it.

The flight stands for the original Starcraft pieces were WAY too fragile.  I've broken more of those than I have the Runewars figures (in fact, I only have one broken Runewars figure, and that was because of poor storage on my part).  I think unless you are playing rough with your runewars stuff they are going to last awhile.

Play time coupled with quality.  Not just components, but gameplay quality, too.  Munchkin is nowhere NEAR the quality of components or gameplay that Runewars is.

Sure, I wouldn't pay any more for Munchkin (not in small part because I wouldn't buy Munchkin myself in the first place; I'll just play someone else's copy), but I still don't feel that I've gotten gypped or ripped off in any way by Runewars price.  I think it's priced pretty good for what you get - quality pieces, and excellent, well-put-together game, and a great experience.

Really? only one of my flight stands broke and it came that way and i fixed it no problem. I've never had any problems with the flight stands. Unless they changed the flight stands when they did a reprint.

I wasn't saying that munchkin was even close to the quality of runewars (because munchkin is just a deck of cards). I was just using that as an example.

Mine broke after the fact, but although I probably didn't have them packed as well as I should, I wasn't overly rough with them.  They are just fragile, and due to the nature of the break, repairing them isn't going to be easy; I may just use tape.

King, i think the real question is...

Why would you pay $100 for Runewars? I just checked amazon.com and you can get it with free shipping for $73.

FFG seems like they know what they're doing, i'm sure they felt the market would support a $100 msrp for Runewars.  (and they were right)

I don't deny that this game has fantastic detail but I just wish the minis were a little thicker and that the tactic cards were the standard size and maybe that there were 2 more terrain tiles.

and I did get a discount on it. I was just saying I didn't get why its regular price is set to 100. I payed full price for starcraft and just after opening the box I could tell the $90 was justified.

Yeah, for me, $100 crosses the line. A liitle too expensive.

$73 steps back over the line onto my side again, and i'm gonna pull the trigger on this one soon. i'de go a little higher at my flgs of course, but not too much.  (maybe 10% or so).

The only problem with checking at the game store first, is that the place is so friggin awesome i never just leave there with what i went in for.

You have to admit that they are of a better quality than those highly disappointing MEQ minatures that mostly came smashed and slintered up in boxes.  I spent hours trying to repair mine and just gave up and made some cardboard standups to replace them.  This is the one time i wish i had bought a FFG from them directly and not some online store so i could get replacements. :(

I'm not sure why having bought from an online store makes a difference in terms of replacements - I've never bought from FFG directly, but have had replacements for a couple games sent to me; all you have to do is ask, Thaadd will likely take care of you!

Really? you can just email them and they will replace those over baked MEQ models? I had the same problem with those pieces they feel like they are going to shatter and Gothmogs axe came broken. I'm gonna try and email them rightnow

FFG has excellent customer service; if they can possibly help you, they will (and MEQ is a new enough game where I'd be surprised if they didn't still have extras just for replacements like they seem to always have).

One thing to note, though; it may be a week or so before you hear back from them, because from what I understand most of the office is heading to GenCon, including Thaadd (the lady who typically handles parts replacement requests), so don't fret if you don't get a response right away.  I'm sure they'll do what they can to help :)

I just saw the game for the first time at gencon today.  Looked pretty good, good enough that I went to their booth to buy a copy.  $100, no show discount.  My jaw dropped.  After seeing the game played, seeing the pieces, etc.  $60-$65 is about what this should go for.  I walked away, I refuse to buy it for that, it's overpriced.  Vote with your wallets.

I did, by buying it ;)  Well worth every single cent I paid.  I did get a discount, but even if that wasn't available to me, I would have paid full price as well.

Been playing it for 6 months, probably have at least 40 or 50 plays or more, and have yet to get tired of it.  Definitely got my money's worth!

I'll them a message Sig.  I was under the impression you could only get the replacements from the distributers since FFG put out that message about them being sent replacements.  I'll let you guys know when i get a response.

It could be different for overseas stuff; they may indeed send them to distributers.  However, Thaadd may still be able to help you, even if it's by getting you in touch with the right person.

But if you live in the USA, I would think that FFG could take care of you directly; at least they have for me whenever I've had problems in the past.

Pretty funny from someone who admits to liking Munchkin.  That game is a ripoff, and if you own one, you own them all.  Also, you are a fool to pay $100 for this game when you can get it from an on-line retailer for about $80.  I ordered this game, Horus Heresy, and two Race for the Galaxy expansions for less than $200 online.  For me, the box size is just about right due to my storage method.  I have a bunch of those plastic bowls from Ziplock, or Glad, or whatever.  Each faction gets all their minis, tokens and cards in a bucket, and the neutral units, as well as the mountains get one, as well.  Common tokens, like damage and influance get one as well, to keep them neat and for ease of passing them around.  Only trouble is the bulk of the bowls, as they make a bunch of dead space, but in the case of the thin plastic of the mountains, it keeps them safe.  I did this same thing with TI3, cept TI3 now occupies the original box, the expansion's box, and then a third for the tiles, so it may not be optimal for you.
