Poll/discussion: Are you a part or full time GM?

Recommended Posts

In the last 10yrs ive only been a player about a half dozen times total.  and the majority of that i played weekly to bi-weekly ( sometimes more than once each week ) so id have to say full time GM  BUT....i always have 1-3 NPCs i run in the groups as well to round them out so to speak and to separate myself from running it enough that i dont get burned out on it since i am technically playing as well ( and always trying to find ways as a player to bend or twist the rules to my taste of the moment so i keep my GM skills at busting the powergamers ahead of the curve so to speak demonio.gif ).

I'm the groups GM for the 40k rpgs because I know the setting better than most of the others and I'm the only one who stepped up to the plate.

I find that they also enjoy watching me get steadily drunker and drunker as the game progresses. Some of our most memorable in game moments have been when I've got a gut full of scotch, like this one time our groups forge worlder scum bluffed his way into the rogue Inquisitors party by posing as a tech adept while he was making his escape from his stormtroopers encampment the other players attacked, interface into the Inqs cruiser, hack through all sorts of firewalls, protocals and security systems to overload the ships wardrives and disable them and then make his escape by blowing the deck he was on and drifting out in a void suit for the others to pick him up.

So, yeah, they have fun when I'm in the hot seat, we get **** done, and I get to drink some very good scotch.

Well we've been playing Dark Heresy for the better part of a year now and I'm yet to actually play Dark Heresy. Sure, I run the games as GM, and I've had the occasional NPC running around with the group, but I've never played the game as a proper PC. This is why I'm looking forward to the end of the campaign I'm running, not because I want it to end (all of us - almost - are having loads of fun with it), but because it'll be nice to just have to worry about one thing - my character - rather than everything for a change.

Thankfully one member of the group is cooking up a Rogue Trader campaign and another has said he wants to run a Deathwatch campaign, so I may get my wish and actually get a chance to play the game rather than always running it.

So I guess that makes me a full time GM. happy.gif

When I first started roleplaying (in the late 90's with WFRP 2nd Ed) I was one of a group of 6, and 3 of us took the DM roles in the group. So I was a part time player, part time DM. As we got older, and moved on to 3/3.5 edition D&D, our group changed a few players, and become 4 of us. I was on of 2 players the DMed (part time player, part time DM) (plus one player that kept trying 2 get a game going, but never really managed it).

For the next couple of years, (3.5 D&D) we dropped down to me and 2 mates, and I became the sole DM in the group, non existant player, fulltime DM (with a guest appearance by our local Uber DM for a game). Up until very recently, we kinda lost the bug 4 RPGs, prefering x box and movies 2 fill our saturday nites. But with the release of Pathfinder (the 3.5 rules will always b superior to the 4e rules) and with me gaining EVERY book that is avaiaible (so far) for Dark Heresy/Rouge Trader/Deathwatch, I am going to run a 3-player DH game, and a friend is running a 5 player Pathfinder Uber Game (im a gestalted Wizard/Bard - Archmage, with extras lol) so im back to part time/part time again.
