Enemy dice

Recommended Posts

Hi all,  my group recently started using a house rule of sorts which we stole from a game called Prophecy (similar to Talisman in certain respects).

The rule is that when you fight, rather than rolling a die for yourself and someone else rolling a die for the enemy, you roll two different colored die at the same time, one for yourself and one for the enemy.

We decided to grab a couple of enemy dice and try this out with Talisman and found the results to be terrific.

It resulted in less time to decide who gets to roll for whom, completely eliminated cheesy tactics such as seeing the enemy roll and then deciding to use/not use some combat enhancing spell/item.

In fact it worked out so well that I thought I would come share it with the community.  Has anyone else tried this and found similar good results? Bad results? What do you think?

On a side note, what color is best for enemy dice?  I currently use blue and am thinking of grabbing deep red or red/black.

we use multiple colors of six sided dice when we play. i currently have about 60. once weve chosen our character, we choose two dice each.

i like the idea of rolling both. it would seem to speed things up and i hate when rolls are made prematurely and someone saves an item or spell that they normally would have used

First thing I did when buying 4th ed was to grab some of my other colored dice.  Knowing from first ed it was a pain.

So now the Red dice are for enemies, Talisman dice are for players.

All the other people whom I've introduced to Talisman now use multi dice.

Same here... been doing it since Talisman 2E came out.  There's also the factor that at least one person in the group has the strange habit of rolling 6s... and usually got banned from rolling for Enemies.

I like the idea, but how do you deal with fate?  If you can see the enemy's roll and THEN decide whether you want a re-roll,  doesn't that give you an unfair advantage?

That's how fate normally works, first both roll, then you get to choose if you want to use fate.

Oh, wow....I read your post and thought, "What is he talking about?"  Then I checked the rules.  We've been playing all along that you have to decide whether to spend your fate BEFORE the creature rolls for his attack.  So if you roll a '2', or worse, a '3', it's kind of hard to decide whether the fate is worth spending:  you could roll lower.  It's more of a gamble, that's for sure...especially if you have no idea whether the creature will roll high.  I'm sure I read that somewhere, though I don't see it now in the rulebook:  did we just somehow make that rule up, or is it written somewhere?  Strange...sorpresa.gif

The whole when to roll for Enemies thing has been interpreted many many ways... because players think an Enemy is a whole different kind of combat than with a another character.  When you roll against another character (player), you typically roll at the same time.  So it is for Enemies in our group, and hence much easier for each player to roll two dice at the same time... one for its character, one for the Enemy.  No previews on either side, and brings back the tension and those moments of suspense beyond just crunching the numbers.

Hi

Not only do we use Enemy Dice we also use a Dice tower, this insure a proper roll and keeps the Dice in the middle of the board for everyone to see.  We put the Dice Tower on the CoC..
