Lay offs.

Recommended Posts

My sympathy goes out to the ffg employees that have been laid off.  Reliable rumours so far.  But most of the devs and some OP.    The timing is never good but with US holidays approaching and the pandemic this is doubly bad.

let’s not worry where the game is going just yet.  Until the dust settles.  I honestly hope it’s not true.  But the source was correct last winter.

so I have just been pointed to a place where it said AD and MG as well?

For them and all others, truly feeling sorry, especially in times like these. I have to believe, though, that their talent will ensure its not the last time we hear from them.

Thx for all the creative work.

I am really sad to hear that we lose devs like MG. How can there be a conitnuity in game development? The old devs know the game. They know the issues that have been discussed for years.

But even more sad it is as soon as you look beyond what it means for us and for the game. That is totally the wrong time for lay offs. I am so sorry for those losing their job.

Bold of you to assume that Asmodee has "continuity in game development" in mind with these decisions.  Isn't Asmodee a private equity firm?  These decisions, like all of their decisions, are made because they think it's going to increase short term gains.  Does their end game include selling off all of FFG's best lines and closing it?  Selling off the FFG brand itself?  Trying to increase the marketability of AMG before they sell that (thus jettisoning all of their miniatures lines from their portfolio)?  Who knows.

Typical corporate American company run by the greed of executives. Wonder if the employees were given any kind of severance package. I have personally seen from one side of the spectrum to the other how situations like this are handled.  Such a shame for the two games that are my favorite (x-wing and Armada).

Asmodee's owners are French, actually. I mean, screw them no matter where they're from, but still.

My big question is why did they not onboard them onto the other company as part of re-org?  Now there is a trust and development continuity gap.  New people are going to take time to come up to speed on the games, and will try to change them in slapdash ways out of pure need to make it their own.  Armada in particular is very sensitive to odd changes, and has an incredibly battle-tested meta-balance.

The timing is ridiculously bad, the way it's being perceived by the community is terribad, and honestly, I'll be shocked if it works out on really any level.  Smooth...

Probably because new people are cheaper than veteran developers/designers?  Also, I'd say it's pretty likely that Asmodee will try and have AMG do what FFG did but with significantly smaller staff, because again that's cheaper.

Welcome to capitalism and private equity firm shennanigans.

From the rumours and statements going around, they did give some of the people the opportunity to move to Washington to work for AMG, but some people understandably weren't willing to do that.

Yeah, you see this constantly in the IT world.  Doesn't actually "work out", but they try it anyways.  Game companies should know better, given the consistently bad history of bringing business professionals into this industry (GW, TSR, Palladium, Catalyst Game Labs, etc, etc, etc).

Did you know that it's possible to criticize the bad aspects of capitalism without immediately advocating full socialism/communism?

This.

I'm pro capitalism every day of the week too. But it's far from a perfect system. If it were a perfect system we wouldn't need government oversight to protect us from monopolies, price gouging, insider trading and so many other things. So while I don't disagree with the sentiment of of the statement make by @daggertx, I feel it could have been worded better as to not sound like trolling.

As an aside, I love this community and how we can keep conversation civil (outside of a select few who I haven't seen around lately, you all know who I'm talking about). So Kudos to all of us.

Lastly, my deepest condolences go out to everyone who lost their job at this time. As someone who has lost their job during this time of year I know how tough it can be, esp. if you have children. But such talent will most certainly be picked up without much waiting (I have no talent and only had about 40 days between jobs). And the silver lining of the pandemic is that more and more companies are making remote working not just a possibility but a requirement. So even if they take a job in a different city, they may not have to relocate permanently.

Speaking of capitalism, here‘s Disney newest story about it:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/nov/19/sstar-wars-author-disney-royalties-alan-dean-foster?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=fb_us&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1Xwpv6UfESpZ7weOr8ENZ2XsC6i5-FkAdrnwcmk0_BP44MOCh1azfXA8M#Echobox=1605797009

tl;dr

Disney has not paid Alan Dean Foster a single dime royalties for his Star Wars books because „they didn‘t bought the obligations of his contract when they acquired Lucasfilm and the rights for his books.“
