Isn’t it also the title of the unit, and so when used in the forums and referring to the unit, wouldn’t it be capitalized?

And yeah I know the title is Tauntaun Riders, but since when do things not get shortened (even to the point of just “Tauns“)?

Exactly.  In Legion, we are referring to the unit, not the species.  Just as you capitalize ARCs, Stormtroopers, Pathfinders, etc, you should capitalize Tauntauns.

Actually Tauntaun Riders refer more to the riders than the tauntauns.

But a Tauntaun Riders with no Tauntaun to ride is no more a rider. And a Tauntaun is still a Tauntaun even if no rider on it.

If only a roguish Tauntaun Rider could find you, sacrifice his tauntaun to save you, set up camp, and get you back to where you needed to be, you'd no longer be lost.

So this can expand out to the X-Wing game too. I love flying around in the Millenium Faltaun, shooting down Imperial TAUN Fighters while protecting the Tauntive IV.

Tauntaun/Tauntauns is/are a proper noun, insofar as it refers to the species ridden in the movies. They had a rich and sophisticated culture of their own before contact with humans. This culture largely consisted of Wampa avoidance techniques, the location of known sources of geothermal heat, how to find lichen, and so forth. However these behaviors are not instinctive and have to be re-taught to each new generation of Tauntauns by the previous generation. Hence, it's a culture. So, it's capitalized like "Greek", "Roman", "Spartan", etc. However there are some 15 types of tauntauns, to which greater category Tauntauns belong, which means either is correct if you're referring to the ones we use in the game.
