[Clan Wren Preview] A House United

Recommended Posts

I was pretty sure Ursa's Long Shot was going to be totally worthless until I saw that she can at least be paired up with Tristan, so he could get in if she uses it to attack at range 3. You probably won't have a second aim to activate his Lethal, but at least he could still contribute. I honestly am a little underwhelmed by the base (generic) unit. they're better than Wookiees, but that's not saying much.

Two Aim tokens should be fairly easy to obtain given the Retinue: Sabine Wren ability.

All in all, the plain unit seems more scary than the named one. Red dice + Def. surge + Nimble will make them very resilient.

That's if you want to spend your whole activation Aiming and shooting instead of using that sweet, sweet, speed 3 move.

Regarding your second point, keep in mind that the named unit will have significantly more HP. Every model has 2 HP.

The X symbol is a one use yes. It's explained in vital assets for the supply drop condition. (They still could have mentioned it). On another note, anyone want to buy 2 painted wookie expansions XD.

Nimble, impervious and situational awerness is gonna make these guys hard as can be. With Sabine already being very powerful, the clan wren is gonna be a must have. The normal one looks like a really good unit as well. Definetly a game changing unit for the rebels.

So what does the Equip: Tristan Wren, Ursa Wren mean?

I see this in the article:

Quote

Clan Wren is defined by the unique skills of some of its most prominent members and two of them must be equipped to this unit.

So is this saying that if you bring a Mandalorian Resistance (Clan Wren) unit, you bring 1 generic Mando, and you must bring both Tristan and Ursa?

Thanks, do not have this expansion yet and am not familiar with the content.

Yes. Seems that they're optional heavy weapons specialist for the "plain" squad or mandatory pieces for the "named" squad.

Yes, it look like you are required to equip any upgrades in the Equip keyword. The unit will be a generic dude (though with 2 HP), Tristan, and Ursa.

If the Clan Wren team doesn't *have* to take Tristan or Ursa, I could see that being a cheap activation for 34 points. Get a speed 3, 2 health model with red dice and impervious/nimble. Easier to keep out of line of sight, though perhaps a lot less useful than a sniper.

I don't see how we could interpret the Equip keyword any other way.

I see. However, it's 120points for mostly range 2 weapons unit of 3 pieces that wants to spend their single aim token for 3 abilities at once...

Would be nice, but that's completely not what the card and the article implies, I'm afraid.

Would definitely make some sense that the "Clan Wren" unit would have to incorporate multiple members of the Clan Wren, huh...?

I mostly say that because the Clan Wren strike team isn't unique (no square in the name). Maybe it means you can take one with Tristan and one with Ursa, but it doesn't make sense that you'd *have* to take both on one team. But we'll see, maybe that's exactly what Equip means.

But this is only the beginning. Clan Wren is defined by the unique skills of some of its most prominent members and two of them must be equipped to this unit.

Anyone with X-wing background will know FFG's preview articles there are not exactly... outstanding at following the rules of the game, but this one seems to have little room for misinterpretation.

Well, it totally does make sense, and I don't see why it wouldn't. That could just be how it works. However, I can see what you're saying being the case as well (the unit not having the unique identifier is a good catch). I still don't see how the rule would work (or why it would even exist) if you didn't have to include at least one of the listed upgrades.

You are not wrong.

's a good catch. I guess I'm just wondering why they don't just include the points in the actual unit card then. Maybe for future point changes?

Looks like you will be able to field both units with one box though. That is nice considering the higher price.

Yeah, they mentioned that in the original preview. Pretty nice.

Why would they? Then you'd be paying for it twice, unless they wrote a bunch of clarifying rules for no reason changing how you add up the cost of a unit when adding it to your army. You just add the unit and upgrade points together as always. Why make it more complicated for no reason?

Remember that while you are obligated to equip both Wrens if you field the Clan Wren, there's nothing forcing you to field the Clan in the first place, allowing you to use either of the named characters as the heavy weapons specialist of the regular Mandalorian unit.

Yeah, and it was clarified in the Discord as well. The reason the card's not unique is because it shares the same name with the generic unit (the bold text, not the italicized bit), so making it unique would sorta mess all that up. At least this means less inexpensive strike teams moving forwards, which isn't bad.

At the very least, red defence die with surge defence and impervious is going to be a huge pain to bring down. Add to that two-wound models in Clan Wren that can potentially have 3 or 5 models; 6 or 10 wounds in it (Still not sure how that looks with the base guy, Ursa, Tristan and the two heavy slots? Or do Ursa and Tristan occupy those slots...) and you've got a seriously well defended unit. Given they can cap objectives and tie up units in melee you won't be able to ignore them like you may ignore a heavy/vehicle.

Oh what's that? They're speed 3 as well? Guess I'll just go lose my flank to Tauns and Mandalorians.

I bet my money they do occupy the slots. I see no reason this wouldn't be a pretty simple and elegant rule solution - there's your slot, there's your upgrade, now you HAVE to use them the way I tell you.

Clan Wren will be 3 models all the time (so 6 wounds).  Even if Ursa and Tristan didn't occupy the heavy weapons slots (which they will), there is only one other heavy weapon upgrade option for the unit.
