The new naming convention makes more sense. Dc15 is the original and the dc15a is what came after.

DC-15S (for Short) would also have been fine per many naming conventions, even in Star Wars. For example the DC-15LE (Long-range Encounters). They could have easily left the DC-15S alone and JUST renamed the DC-15A was my point, no need to "move" the DC-15A name over.

The "DC-15S" from Legends is now called the DC-15A, which is the default blaster for Clones. If you mean the rifle pictured, that's now called the DC-15, in Legends it was called the "DC-15A."
I have also been caught by this confusing, annoying change in weapon names that was decreed for some mysterious reason... >_<

But yes, the DC-15 is cited as the standard weapon, and having a unit with Ranged 4 weapons would probably mix up the meta a bit. Presumably they would NOT be Clone Troopers, which would make for an interesting decision, since (barring having Exemplar or some other special rule) they wouldn't be able to share tokens.

I think he was pluralizing DC-15, not trying to say DC-15S.

I legitimately didn't even think of that...
Yeah that does make sense. This is what my inability to forget random things like fictional weapon designations gets me. 😆

Haha, yeah, that's also just an innate issue of ending a designation like that with "S".  It gets even more problematic with the (singular) E-5s, since one can't even rely on capitalization to convey the difference between that and more than one E-5.

I have a lot of experience with historical wargaming where the letter designations alone aren't enough to be specific.  I'm in the habit of adding an apostrophe even on non-possessives in order to indicate a pluralization of equipment designations, or typing out what the thing is after the designation. Building on your example, I'm more likely to indicate the difference by typing E-5's, or more frequently E-5 blasters.

For WW2 wargaming alone, an "M1" for instance could be any of the following:
M1 Carbine
M1 Garand
M1 bayonet
M1 flamethrower
M1 Thompson submachine gun
90 mm M1 gun
M1 Combat Car
M1 chemical mine
M1 Thompson light rifle
M1 mortar
M1 helmet
57mm gun M1 (US designation of the British QF 6-pounder)
M1 rocket launcher (bazooka)
So if I were to type "I want to include the M1 in an army list," the reader doesn't actually know what I am referencing.

Following the pattern, the next Special Forces would be part of the same "wave" as Anakin and Darth Maul, and possibly released the same month. But you're right, that should be part of the same announcement. They may not be melee though, since the pattern has not been followed exactly (vehicle Supports instead of Emplacement Supports, for instance). I could easily see the CIS one being Magnaguard, but Republic not getting a melee unit.

Also, per the Upcoming page, the AT-RT and STAAP are due in September with ARC and Commando droids. The recent FFG releases have been mostly clusters of 3-4 boxes, but delays are possible, and even likely.

I think they have been trying to move more towards both factions getting something at the same time rather than just plusing one faction one month and then another the next.

I mean with everything going on I expect to see the AT-RT and STAAPs slip back a month, though if it doesn't then I'd be more than happy if we were able to get another release this year ontop of Anakin and Maul + the new SFs.

The FFG schedule has been a bit more of a mess than usual ever since the dewbacle. Some of it is due to pandemic issues, some has been production delays (AAT for instance). I've been seeing people claim they are already receiving shipping notifications for BX commando droids from Asmodee, and combined with the number of releases for January (6-7? I think the Escape pod was released then), February (3), and July (3 due to delayed AAT from February), it's hard to say what they actually want to be doing release wise anymore, regardless of what the "Upcoming" page indicates. Despite having dates on it now, the upcoming page isn't significantly more reliable than it used to be.

EDIT: But I do agree, it is likely the SF will be a separate month, I was thinking there was the possibility of another 4 release month.

I'd love to see another 4 release month, but we will see. Heck, if FFG goes and announces a good bit of stuff at Gencon for Legion, past just Anakin/Maul and new SF, that would be a decently positive sign.

Legion has been a huge mess for months (some of it not their fault). And I understand that, but dang I really wish they would tell us what their goal for release would be. Before it was one or two units at the end of the month for 6 a quarter, but Clone Wars changed all that. They started to say waves, increased their goal to 8 units a quarter, and even said they would start doing themes in their releases.........................

Since their PR side is pretty bad I would not be surprised if it takes until next year for us to find out how they will do releases (split up waves or huge ones). Which I understand the virus, but I wish they would be a bit more interactive with the community and throw us a bone now and then.

@RyantheFett To be honest FFG is slightly better about giving us actual release dates now, at least the week or so before. The "old" days where stuff was vaguely "on the boat," "in production," etc were much worse. Especially when the intern would forgot to update the statuses.

I'm still not a huge fan of the quarter release windows on the annual announcements, but I understand it.

Im sure they will address this at the in flight report later this month. Im sure things have been crazy for them with Asmodee taking over distribution right when a global pandemuc hit.

What are you hoping to see?

I really hope we get low cost commanders for CIS and GAR.

I’d like both of these.

I also want to see... Gungans. Or Naboo Sec Forces. I want something for my Republic that’s not just more white armor (though I do like my clone forces as well).

Maybe with the introduction of subfactions in the Gungans, we will see some Ewok expansions for the Rebels (I wish). Who wouldn’t want low profile, infiltrating Yub Yubs :)

I think Wookies for Republic would be out  before Gungans. I could see them doing rifle Wookies for the Republic as a corps, and then somehow release a card to use melee Wookies in Republic as well (sprue re-release or in with the rifle Wookies?). Tarfful or Chewbacca as a Commander/Operative.

Of course with Darth Maul leaked, Gungans or Naboo Royal Guard are just as likely.

The only reason I doubt the Wookies for Republic is because they were already done for Rebels. Then again, look at the ATRT.

Wookies would be fun too, although I’m not sure what they’d look like to set themselves apart from the rebel one.

I think the reason for choosing Wookies over Gungans is the fact some sculpting has been done already. The reason for choosing Gungans over Wookies is unit diversity and being able to turn around and sell us a bunch of themed units (kaadu mounted creature trooper, infantry with some options for ranged or melee attack, plus the model variant with the shields, “Booma” artillery unit etc). Maybe not all at once, but once the precedent is set you’d have access to a lot. Wookies is basically Wooks with guns, Wooks with melee, and the little flying thing from Ep3. And the Wooks with melee really amounts to a redo of the old one.

The fact that it is a repeat would be part of the point.

FFG already has approval for the sculpts of the melee Wookies, has already developed stats, and worked out the points. Switch the symbol on the melee card to Republic, done. Significantly less work, and now the unit can be sold to Republic players and Rebel players. The thing that would "set them apart" is being supported by Clones, or synergy with another Republic only unit (like rifle armed Wookies, or a Commander). Wookiee Warriors could even be set apart by being allowed access to new Heavy options, but only in the Republic list that they share with the ranged Wookies. Warrior Wookies with a Detonate heavy weapon could be interesting.

To allow for Wookiee Warriors to be used in both armies, they could put the Republic card in a separate Wookiee unit box, release a Wookiee upgrade box, or just let Republic players use their Rebel card until that unit gets redone in hard plastic, and then put both cards in the new box.

I also wasn't trying to say that Gungans would never come, just that I would think Wookies are more likely to be released/announced first. I could see Gungans as an official subfaction later, whereas Wookiee would just be something that is able to be run, but plays best when included with Clones as opposed to run on their own.

I would say the next wave or two will be the big test for how much FFG will repeat units cross faction. Especially since we should be getting FO, Resistance, and Scum which would really cause some overlap. Can easily see four factions with some type of wookie and five with Mandos.

I also think Gungans will come later rather then sooner. Think it would be hard to make a theme when pumping out 6 units for CW to try and let those factions catch up. Seems like theme waves would be something needed after a few factions run out of clear options for units. Of course they may just switch to theme waves for the lulz. Knowing FFG we will not know for while, but either way it will be interesting.

Did they announce fo, resistance and scum factions for legion? If they haven’t announced it, expect maybe a scum faction, but without a lot of creative freedom to just make up stuff there isn’t much for them to build a fo or resistance army.

No, there have been no announcements. The entire thread is wishlist and/or speculation.

I also find scum more likely than sequel trilogy factions, however I don’t think we are remotely ready for the scum faction. The GAR has only one corps choice (P2s don’t count when they’re rare as hen’s teeth and their release was an entire disaster), the droids aren’t much better off. The first SF option for prequels is not yet out, etc.

Let the CW factions breathe for a second before cutting them off with another faction. CW factions should have 2x SF, 2x corps in circulation, 2-3x support, plus the specialists pack and another hero or two before we talk more factions.

Personally, I think CW factions should be at least in a similar state to GCW factions when CW was announced before any new faction announcements.

So iirc, around 5 leaders, 2 operatives, 3 corps, 3.5 special forces (strike team I'm counting as half), 3 support, and 2 heavy per faction.

Right now, including announcements and leaks, CW has: 3 leaders, 1 operative, 2 corps, 1.5 Special Forces, 2 support, and 1 heavy. That's a fair ways to go still when you account for GCW releases slowing things down.

It is possibly FFG could bring out another faction sooner, but personally I doubt it.
