Questions on huge ships

Recommended Posts

So, I’ve never played an epic game, don’t know if I ever will, but I’m very interested in acquiring the Huge ships anyway (for the models, if for no other reason). Help me out with this...

1. How many huge ships are there, and which have been reprinted in 2.0? Which of them come with small based escort fighters (and which fighters are they?)?

The ones I know about are the CR-90 (with X-Wing?), the GR-75, the C-ROC (with Sczyk?), the Gozanti (with TIE/ln?) and the Raider Corvette (with TIE Advanced x1?). Am I missing any?

2. Are there any huge ships that are very difficult to acquire? I’d like to get those first, I think.

3. Are there any which are weak or disappointing to play? I’ll probably still want them, but may make them lower-priority acquisitions.

4. When buying them on the secondary market, how much of a priority is it to make sure they come with bases and pegs? I currently have none. I have one Huge Conversion Kit on the way, but I don’t know if that includes any huge bases or pegs.

5. Assuming I wanted to get one of each huge ship, and assuming I wanted to field (or at least, display) one of each, how many kits will I need?

6. Are there any huge ships which I might want in multiples? Is fielding more than one even feasible for a decent team?

7. Anything else I may want to know? I’m not even sure what I need to understand to build such a collection intelligently, and hopefully not spend far more than I need to.

8. As I noted above, I have one Huge Ship Conversion Kit on the way, and I also have one Epic Expansion on the way. Does the Epic Expansion have conversion kit-type materials in it?

I... guess that’s all I can think of. Thanks in advance!

1. 5 Huge Ships. 2 have been reprinted for second edition. All have been converted via the conversion kit.

Those ships are:

  • The CR-90 Corellian Corvette [This has been reprinted for 2e, the paint is a little different and includes engine glow]
  • The GR-75 Medium Transport [Not yet been re-released, the original came with an alt paint T-65 X-Wing]
  • The Imperial Raider Corvette [Was supposed to be re-released, but has been indefinitely delayed. The original 1e version came with an alt-paint TIE Advanced x1, the re-release probably won't, based on images]
  • The Imperial Assault Carrier [Not yet been re-released, the original came two alt paint TIE/ln Fighters]
  • The C-ROC [Has been re-released. The original came with an alt paint Scyk, the re-release does not].

So no, you've not missed any.

2. Depends where you are. I'm in the UK and, interestingly, the Raider seems really hard to find. This is despite the reason for the 2e re-release not going ahead apparently being due to an overabundance of stock. The GR-75 is also out of stock most places, and the only CR-90s knocking around are the 2e versions.

3. I don't own all of them, and there's a not a ton of data out there in terms of people reporting back their experiences, so it's hard to say. From what I gather, the CR-90 and Raider are both pretty strong, but the GR-75, Assault Carrier and C-ROC are all pretty situational. The GR-75 is basically a big list building puzzle. I don't think it's bad, but there's a lot of potential upgrade combinations to get your head around. I can't report on the C-ROC or Assault Carrier myself unfortunately.

4. https://xwing-miniatures-second-edition.fandom.com/wiki/Huge_Ship_Conversion_Kit

It's going to depend largely on how many you want to field at the same time. The conversion kit only comes with two bases, so even if all you want to do is display all of them you'll need to buy ships with their bases. Shouldn't be too hard, though. I can't imagine many people will sell the models without the bases even if they don't include the cardboard.

Might be worth bearing in mind that the new bases are a lot better and sturdier. Haven't tried it myself, but I think the 2e cardboard should fit on the old 1e bases though.  Nope, just tried it and saw @Gilarius' post at the same time. New cardboard needs new bases.

So one conversion kit will only support a max of any two Huge ships on the table at once.

5. Again, this depends on how many you want to field in a game (as in total number of huge ships), but the conversion kit should convert one of each type, essentially. Each ship can be used by two factions, so there's two dials for each ship. There's only one 'pilot' for each ship, though, so there's only one base token per ship, with one faction's pilot on each side. That means you can't field two of one type of ship in a game out the box, however, even if they're on different teams in different factions.

6. If you're a masochist, maybe. Double GR-75s might be the only one I'd remotely consider.

7. I'd probably assemble the collection by getting the 2e versions of the CR-90 and C-ROC, then trying to get the 1e versions of the other ships and using the conversion kit for them. The new CR-90 and C-ROC are pretty readily available, but the key thing is they'll come with their own new base, so you'll have four in total with the conversion kit. Should be plenty. The dial in the new CR-90 is wrong in the expansion, but you'll have the correct one in the conversion kit, so that won't be a problem. Some people seem to think the 2e Raider was outright cancelled, but I'm not so convinced. I've seen some stores start listing it again, with a tentative release date of December 2020. Depends how easy to find the old version is, but you might be able to wait till then if you can't find one.

I wouldn't bother looking for an old version of the C-ROC just for the Scyk repaint, it's nothing special. Obviously if the 1e version is much cheaper and you're not fussed about bases, then go for it.

8. https://xwing-miniatures-second-edition.fandom.com/wiki/Epic_Battles_Multiplayer_Expansion

No conversion-y content in the Epic Battles expansion. It's just a set of objective based scenarios, alternative play modes and a bit of cardboard to support them. The biggest inclusion is the Wing Tool, for moving blocks of small base ships around at once. There's also a lot of cardboard in there based around the Wing system, including Wing Leader upgrade cards and Quick Build cards for whole wings (some of which, in Quick Build fashion, allow for combinations of ships in a Wing that aren't allowed by the standard rules).

C-ROC, CR90, Raider, Rebel Transport, Gozanti. For 2.0, only the C-ROC and CR90 have been released.

The ones I know about are the CR-90 (with X-Wing?), the GR-75, the C-ROC (with Sczyk?), the Gozanti (with TIE/ln?) and the Raider Corvette (with TIE Advanced x1?). Am I missing any?

In 1st ed, C-ROC came with a Scyk, CR90 had nothing, Raider had Tie/x1, Rebel Transport had X-wing, Gozanti had 2x Tie/ln. In 2.0, neither ship comes with any other ship. The 2.0 CR90 also has the wrong dial; the correct one is in the Huge Ship Conversion Kit

2. Are there any huge ships that are very difficult to acquire? I’d like to get those first, I think.

If you have the conversion kit, I'd get any 1st ed ones you can find.

3. Are there any which are weak or disappointing to play? I’ll probably still want them, but may make them lower-priority acquisitions.

They are all decent in 2.0. The C-ROC is the most versatile - it can be equipped as a heavy weapons platform or a support ship; the others can only really do one role each.

4. When buying them on the secondary market, how much of a priority is it to make sure they come with bases and pegs? I currently have none. I have one Huge Conversion Kit on the way, but I don’t know if that includes any huge bases or pegs.
The old bases and pegs are not compatible with the new cardboard ship tokens. The conversion kit only has 2 new bases plus pegs, but has enough cardboard bits to field one of each of the 5 ships - just only 2 of them at a time due to the number of bases/pegs.
See xwing-miniatures-second-edition.fandom.com/wiki/Huge_Ship_Conversion_Kit for more details.

5. Assuming I wanted to get one of each huge ship, and assuming I wanted to field (or at least, display) one of each, how many kits will I need?

See above - any 2.

6. Are there any huge ships which I might want in multiples? Is fielding more than one even feasible for a decent team?
It depends on what you want to fly and your friends. The most I've had in the same game is 11 huge ships: 3 Transports plus 2 of each of the others. In an Epic tournament at 500pts, I've faced double C-ROCs and also double CR90s. I've played double Gozantis myself, but that was in 1st ed.

7. Anything else I may want to know? I’m not even sure what I need to understand to build such a collection intelligently, and hopefully not spend far more than I need to.
Finding cheap 2nd hand ships - or failing to - might decide this for you. I tend to get a bit carried away where it comes to huge ships...

8. As I noted above, I have one Huge Ship Conversion Kit on the way, and I also have one Epic Expansion on the way. Does the Epic Expansion have conversion kit-type materials in it?
Epic Expansion is very useful, but Epic does not mean Huge in 2.0. Epic is scenarios and varied points limits and 'Wings' for flying multiple ships easily. See the wiki for more details of the contents.

I... guess that’s all I can think of. Thanks in advance!

No problem :)

Hi.

I think two of them have been reprinted from the version 1.0 (the cornelian corvette, an the Scum C Roc) but the rest are willing to be printed as they are included on the expansion/conversion pack.

I f you like this models (and huge ship models you may find many other more on this scale, made by fans and collectors ( Indeed I can be included on this pack...)

I los have made a hammerhead corvette and I’ve seen someone has made an imperial light cruiser like the ones in rebels, Neville B frigates (yo can see it on The Empire Strikes back...) and rebel gunboats...

You can see many of them here on this blogs, if you like I can give. You a link for the hammer head corvette.

hope you may enjoy with this

One note on the conversion kits. Several of them have quality issues with the cardboard bases not having the holes punched at the correct spacing. I had to take a sharp knife to mine so I could even use them.

As named above, Double C-Rocs.

They are pretty cheap, just Ion battery. 63 pts for 16hp and 2 attacks per round, of which one does crit and ion, up to range 4.

I'll add my two cents:  I will put in a second vote for double C-ROC being solid.  See my BatReps for reasons why I believe that, ha ha.  Although as a Scum/CIS player, I *might* be slightly biased.  As noted above, the GR-75 is a puzzle.  Otherwise, I think your queries have been more than adequately addressed.  I would add a strong urge that you play some games with the buggers, though, rather just displaying them.  While they are indeed gorgeous, they are also an absolute kick to play.  All of them.

I’d love to, but I had the unbelievable luck of having bought big into X-Wing about a week before lockdown. All of my “table time” has basically been against a couple guys on TTS. I’m mainly getting the huge models because I spent quarantine collecting literally everything else, and it just feels like I ought to get them.

That is some luck.  ****.  I would still recommend putting them on the table, even if only to get a feel for how they move - which is substantially different from everything else.  300 points is perfectly reasonable on a standard 3x3 X-Wing surface and allows for a decent huge-ship build.  And i play with myself all the time...*against* myself.  I play *against* myself all the time.  But really, I will drop two lists and play each as if I were playing like a rational person on either side, picking the most likely strategies and maneuvers for each side in any given situation.  It's not optimal as my usual style is to play for the unpredictable, but it is entertaining, and does give me a feel at least for what they can do.  Give it a shot.  At worst, you waste a couple hours pushing plastic spaceships around on a table in the comfort of your own home.
