AH Damage and XP Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Fairly new player here - been having a blast with the game with my limited amount of time I am able to play. Last night my son and I finally sat down to seriously start playing the Night of  the Zealot campaign after some starts and stops getting up to speed on how the game works. He was extremely excited to get Lita Chantler parleyed and even more excited to kill the Ghoul Priest. It got tight down the end and he ended up having to take an automatic attack from the Ghoul Priest but he got the job done all by himself with no help from me and my books (I was playing Daisy). :)

So, we have a fairly decent understanding of the rules and mechanics of the game and how it is played (we still make our mistakes) but a couple of items I was looking for clarification on. For weapon items such as Knife and others that give a damage bonus - do you get the damage bonus no matter the outcome of the fight? The modifier for some of the these weapons and abilities says this attack does +1 damage. Do you get the +1 damage no matter what? An example would be throwing my knife at an enemy and then pulling the auto fail from the chaos bag. Since I lost the fight I do 0 damage but since I threw the knife it says to do +1 damage so 0 + 1 would be deal one damage to the enemy? Is that correct?

Last question is regarding upgrading cards using experience points. I thought I had read somewhere that if you purchase an upgrade of a card you automatically get the two cards (playset) of that name card. Or do I have to purchase both cards if I want the playset in my deck? In other words if I want to upgrade my Blinding Light Level 0 to a Blinding Light Level 2 playset do I spend 2XP or 4XP?

Thanks all. I look forward to being part of the community and this super fun game.

For your first question, you are incorrect. Using an ability that states something like "This attack deals +1 damage" still doesn't do anything if the attack misses. From the Rules Reference, under "Fight":

Quote

If the test is successful, the attack succeeds and damage is dealt to the attacked enemy. The default damage dealt by an attack is 1. Some weapons, spells, or other special attacks may modify this damage. [...]

If the test fails, no damage is dealt to the attacked enemy. However, if an investigator fails this test against an enemy that is engaged with another single investigator, the damage of the attack is dealt to the investigator engaged with that enemy.

For your second question, you have to purchase each new card individually, so purchasing two copies of Blinding Light (2) would cost a total of 4 exp. From the Rules Reference, under "Campaign Play (Experience)":

Quote

New cards are purchased (or upgraded) individually. If an investigator wishes to purchase more than 1 copy of a new card, each copy must be paid for separately, and one card must be removed from that investigator's deck for each copy purchased.

The only exception to this are cards with the "myriad" keyword, of which you can have up to 3 in your deck rather than two and if you purchase one copy, you can purchase up to two additional copies for free, but that doesn't appear on cards until The Dream-Eaters expansion so not something you need to worry about for now.

It all seems so simple when you read the rules. :) Thanks for the clarification. I think I must have gotten confused when I read the exception for Myriad.
