Operative Darth Maul with Sith Probe droid confirmed

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Pre Clone wars launch:

"Oh I'm definitely buying into CIS. Something about hordes of cheap disposable droids sounds really appealing"

FFG:

"How would you like a bunch of expensive power units and, like, a cap of 6 cheap disposable units? That sounds fun too right?"

Are droids really going to be that broken with a 50-90 point commander? Is it so much to ask? At least the BXs and STAPs will offer some "lower" cost units. That said as much fun as GG is to use scale hi-jinks with, I really want cheaper options for a commander.

Site says its a Canadian Exclusive, so there's no worry of it coming to the States. Nothing to see here, move along...

No, Lion Rampant is the exclusive supplier of FFG products in Canada.

If you click on the Publishers tab, it displays a list of all the game publishers that Lion Rampant distributes in Canada, and most of are listed "(Publisher Name) - Canadian Exclusive".

The Darth Maul Operative expansion will be available globally, whenever it's released.

Here is the strange thing when you stop and think about it there is little to no chance CIS won't be getting a cheap commander at some point. The specialist pack has to come out at some point? The new factions have also followed the exact same types of units as the older factions. So that would mean CIS would get no generic commander or it would have to be 150 points or more???? Throw in the fact that all three other factions have cheap support commanders and it really makes me wonder what is going on?

Really cannot figure it out since I think CIS would get a lot more options with having a cheap commander. I am just going with a lack of foresite for now and keep my fingers crossed for that tactical droid sooner rather then later.

Well, after so many peeps saying "Maul will not be CIS!" or "They will never release Maul before Scum is in the game!"...

Unless we wanna add in the Zann Consortium, I really don't think any of the criminal factions would make a decent overall "Legion" faction. Something on the Imperial Assault scale, sure. Legion? Nah.

Speaking purely from a lore standpoint, we're talking the one faction that literally manufactures command staff. Tactical droids are a layup for FFG for generic commanders, give them like surge-token granting ability and an extra large coordinate (as a personnel upgrade, just have them lose Ai: Attack, and boost the courage by 1).

Legion is not much bigger. Even the 800 point games are more like skirmishes compared to other tabletop wargames. I like the idea of a scum faction in general. What I dislike: Empire would probably lose use of Boba Fett and Bossk (like they did in X-Wing - which kind of sucked).

At this rate it's going to be more than a full year after launch before CIS gets a less than 100 point commander. It's obnoxious. Every single other faction got their low cost guy within 2 months of that faction's launch.

It's annoying at this point. Why was Dooku, an even more expensive melee commander, before a tactical droid or Nute Gunray or some other less important mook?

I can only guess game balance?

Maybe they had to stagger the low cost commander for CIS because the clones wouldn't have the variance to deal with 12+ activation droid lists until later?

Either way it sucks. I hate trying to be patient.

If it's any consolation, this Anakin/Maul combo of commander/operative will likely be flipped similar to how it was with the Empire and Rebellion. So that sort of gets my hopes up that the next release right afterwards would be a operative/commander for the Republic and CIS.

Edit: Then again, I guess there were emplacements and another group of special forces introduced before that happened with the civil war factions.

In between Solo/Boba and Chewie/Palpatine?

I agree,i'm getting rather annoyed at this strategy. I wanted an army which gave me more activations than the Empire, not less.

I would have preferred the Probe Droid from Empire Strikes Back over any other type of droid at this point. Maul is disappointing, as is the need to insert another droid to fill out the sprue and charge $20 instead of $15 for an operative.

Eh, I did tend to include that FFG/Disney does what they want. I was mostly pointing out that there was a valid reason for them to exclude him from the CIS. I still think Asajj would be more logical choice, but whatever, this is the same game that has Palpatine leading reinforced platoons regularly. From a marketing stand point, Darth Maul is more recognizable, and the recognition of Star Wars is what keeps people buying the models.

If the pattern in releases holds, then after the Maul/Special Forces/Anakin/Special Forces we should get the Specialist box, which should include generic commanders, comms troopers, medics, and repair troopers.

The Hutts are big enough that neither the CIS nor the GAR invade them, instead choosing to negotiate, bribe, and avoid open conflict. The Crimson Dawn are also a major threat at a galactic scale, but that's not the scale Legion is played at anyway. It's played at the reinforced platoon level, with roughly 30-60 individual infantry on the field at a time. We see various crime factions field at least that many troops at various points in canon, some with significant armour support even.

Forgot the next GAR Commander had also leaked.

To be fair, that's a limit of the force chart and not because the lack of cheap commanders.

The mantra that FFG seems to be going with is that everything outside of B1s is going to be strong with the CIS. A cheap, generic commander is going to be released at some point. At least the commanders we currently have are both really strong so the lack of a cheap one isn't as bad.

If we follow the release schedule from the OT factions then we only have another SF unit after Maul and Anakin and then would get out generic commanders. So provided we don't get another OT expansion the schedule should hopefully be:
July: Padme and Cad Bane

August: ARC Troopers and BX Droid Commandos

September: AT-RT, STAPs, Inferno Squad, and Mandalorians

October: Anakin, and Maul

November: Republic and CIS 2nd SF units, likely generic Jedi and Magna Guards

December: Republic and Separatist Specialists

Legion really isn't all that big combat wise, like its mostly a few squads and a hero in a skirmish. I figure that Scum would allow for some design options with sub-factions like Hutt Cartel, Black Sun, Zahn Consortium, Pyke Syndicate, etc.

I'd hope they'd just keep Boba and Bossk like they did in X-Wing 1.0 so they still can use them but the Bounty Hunters have new versions used for Scum. On the plus side that would in turn give Imperial players 3 new command cards.

I'm mildly  surprised that Anakin isn't coming with Ashoka in the same box, like Cassian and K2-S0. It seems like Darth Maul is very much taking cues from Iden, despite not being as closely associated with the probe droids as she is with ID-10. We don't see him fight along side them, just use them to scout Tatooine as far as I recall. Unlike the Seventh Sister...

yeah, there's no reason to get rid of them, just print new cards, new command cards, new upgrade abilities or weapons, etc. Crossover, just means more models sold.

Generic Jedi would be interesting. I wonder if they'll do that as a SF Melee unit or if they'll include different named characters like Kit Fisto or Plo Koon like they are doing with Fives and Echo.
