Clone wars oos had little to do with covid and most to do with an inability to properly forecast product

Fantasy Flight has always been terrible at project management and logistics.  Destiny was strangled in the cradle due to incompetence.

This is an unfortunate thing that happens in many wargames. I don't fully understand the meta chasers given most people aren't going to World's. Is winning enjoyable? Yes, but so is a fun game with units you like. If there isn't an tournament in the next month, that's the time to experiment, or run scenario games.

Best I can guess is it’s fear of what the others may bring, so better bring the very best so you can handle anything.

I’m just not cut out for that level of keeping up with the Joneses. But I also want to have a fighting chance so I don’t just show up with what I want anyway in spite of the meta game. Rather just play with friends then. Maybe I’ll try to invite folks who aren’t in the game to try the game by using my pieces?

Yes agreed, which is why I stay away from the competitive scene. I'd rather just run Wookie Warriors and full Commandos because it is fun than have to buy 3 sets of something to use 1/3 of the models because my activation count cant be below 10 or I lose automatically. (obvious exaggeration but you get the point).

Competitiveness can be really hard for the casual player in these games I have learned, however it does help breed the player base by giving the big tournaments a purpose at major events.

I do think FFG does a good job of including a narrative event at their major tourneys, I would love to see more of this officially supported though through the game. IE. rule set systems where you are capped at 1 special forces strike team, or have to take at least A B C, or you have to have at least 2 corp units with the 5th trooper or something that adds some variety to the game versus the generic meta lists. And I know people think that will be to restricting, but I think you will find it actually opens lists up to more variety in the end.

I'd be ok with capping strike teams at 1, but I don't play meta lists.

I don't remember the last time I used a sniper... There is a chance I used one a few months ago in my one Jedi Luke game but aside from that it's been forever..... Full transparency I've been mailing GAR so lololol

I saw a ton of people playing Destiny events at LVO, even after its cancellation was announced. I tried it myself when it came out and had a good time, but what really killed it for me was the dice. They implemented a set rotation like M:tG and it was rediculous to not only cycle out cards but boxes and boxes of plastic dice for heroes and some upgrades.

It was a cool game but it didnt scale well since you need all those dice!

Heaven forbid you lose the die to a specific card... Interesting idea, but I think it would have worked better in an all digital format.

I agree, competitiveness does help keep the game profitable, but showing up to purely fun events with zero stakes with a "fun" list only to face a bunch of netlisters who are worried about playing optimally isn't much fun.

Honestly, I'd really like FFG to release more Operations. They could impose more list building limitations on those to provide interesting, fun games. For instance, same number of points, but different limitations on number of activations, require one side to include a tank (to recreate the scene from Rogue One for instance), or other similar options.

That would suck me in big time. The standard battle cards system is pretty cool, but I like the alternate requirements mode that disrupt whatever the most efficient meta archetypes are.

Honestly, I would play way more if I had access to those kinds of formats.

I think right now, my biggest concern going forward is availability of releases. I feel like if I want to ever see a particular miniature unit, I need to preorder it ASAP because I likely will never see it again. Look at B2s and P2s. Then there are things like Death Troopers. And that FOMO is starting to be a buzz kill to me. I go back and forth between “do I downsize factions from 3 to 1?” to “stick with it and don’t panic” to “move along because I don’t see this problem from other manufacturers.” And yes, this issue predates covid. Don’t blame that as the only issue.

It would be cool to see something like, you have to take X Amount of these upgrade categories, but can only actually have one of each upgrade in your army. And you have to take 1 SF, 1 support, 3 corp units but can only have a max of 2 of the same type of corp etc.. etc.. Not getting TO complicated but restrictions that promote VARIETY in a simplistic format over cooker cutterness.  That is the game I want to play in. I hate seeing cards that are effectively useless because it doesn't fit the meta, or even worse UNIT TYPES THAT ARE USELESS BECAUSE THEY DON'T FIT THE META! This is a horrible game design! Kudos to FFG for trying to balance points on a yearly basis.. but we need more than that obviously. The new hotness comes out and its just everyone running Rexstar with 4 sets of over watch phase 2's. God forbid you brought a set of Phase 1's with the 5th trooper and the shot gun. Or a set of phase 2's without over watch but had the mortar!

So much this.

And good luck gang, you don’t get phase 2s because the handful that did make it out belong to the same 2-3 people who all bought that many because TTS showed it was super meta good.

It didn't take TTS to realize they were going to be extremely good.  Overwatch+token sharing was a pretty obviously powerful combo.

Which, in fairness, Phase Is can also do, it just requires the trooper upgrade box (which is also out of stock [likely for the same reason]), and it loses 1 Courage and Reliable 1 (though it gains an extra body and the Clone Captain ability) for 7 more points (98 for Phase Is vs 91 for Phase IIs [assuming Z6s on both units]).

Honestly, at this point I'm only buying the units that excite me owing to what they represent from Star Wars for my "non-competitive play" factions as opposed to buying everything. It's very difficult to keep up with the arms race with multiple factions honestly.

As to variant formats, if FFG won't provide but you have an agreeable playgroup, nothing stops you from coming up with your own! I've done that before for historical games, so having different points values, but the side with fewer points deploys in cover and only has to stop the opponent from moving off the other side, or otherwise defend the only objective. Have part of one or both armies held off table in reserve, but then they come on the table from a random table edge. Changing the force org chart so (for instance) the Rebels can only deploy Commanders, Operatives, and Special Forces, while the Imperials have Veers or the generic commander, Corps units, Supports, and Heavy to represent a standard garrison.

As is everything else TCW other than the technically era-agnostic Vital Assets (and BARC Speeders IIRC).

Four months and a week since my orders, and there's still no restock date in sight. It's bloody ridiculous.
