Solo - An Underappreciated Gem

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So based on this thread, I watched it again last night and, IMO, it still holds up as a fun and exciting Star Wars movie.  Aside from L3-37, I pretty much enjoyed the whole thing.  But just like the first time I saw it, aside from meeting and interacting with Lando (because Donald Glover did amazing), I didn't particularly care for any of the "Han Solo backstory block checks."  Whether it was meeting Chewie, getting his signature blaster, or even making the Kessel Run (aside from the TIE Fighter chase), most of it didn't really touch or resonate with me.  I felt like it could have been called Crimson Dawn or Crime Syndicate: A Star Wars Story and I would have enjoyed it just as much.  Which makes me disappointed that Solo 2 (insert appropriate Fast & Furious sequel name here) seemed to be cancelled, because now that the backstory checks are out of the way (aside from dropping Jabba's cargo pre-ANH), I really want to see him and Chewie get into some smuggling shenanigans (no rathtars, please).

Edit: And yes, Han shooting Beckett first at the end was awesome.

I loved the Dryden Vos character. Paul Bettany is fantastic, and he channels the high society art collector but also guts regional governors with zero warning.

The cameo in Clone Wars was a treat.

Sucks that the movie got review-bombed by hate campaigns. Some self-styled "fans" are pretty weird.

I often remind myself that "fan" is short for "fanatic." It actually kind of fits. For this reason, I've started calling myself a Star Wars "Enthusiast." I like some entries more than others, but in the end, I try to be a champion for it all.

Indeed it was awesome but I wished Beckett lived to see the sequel, I really liked the character.

I think Solo is a perfect sunday night movie, it is not so serious, it is fun, maybe it has flaws but still I enjoyed the movie.

it would have been better if he won the Sabaac game in the sequel, at the end of the movie, it really felt like the whole game scene was rushed.

Also at Kessel Run, either ISD 1 or Interdictor ( as suggested in this post) could have followed MF into the storm and could fight that big monster thingy or get swallowed by the black hole.

one last wish as an Armada player, a space scene with a Dreadnought even a Victory would have been a good opportunity to canonize them.

I thought it was a overall bad movie. It had too many false stakes and contrivances for convenience that took me away from my suspension while trying to cram ask the check boxes in the whole while. The only thing I liked about it was when Han had the line 'we're the hostiles here' or whatever it was when the commander was ordering the troops out. That was bizarrely profound for the movie to go for, but also set up some character aspects that we don't get much of in that film. Beyond that even on second viewing I couldn't really enjoy much of it at all. Stupidly I thought the deleted TIE piloting scene was the only other gem to be garnered. At least I wasn't bothered by the L3 sjw bit, for what that's worth. It was fine for me even if it was really forced. I wouldn't have gone to a second if it was made, but even on first viewing it didn't seem like they were trying too hard to set one up. The movie would have been much better for me if it had instead been a series like Mandalorian.

But that's just like, my opinion, man.

Genuinely curious, because I liked the film, what did people dislike about L3?

I've seen it come up a few times.

Please not that query, it blows up into arguments. Its an objection to a female droid empowering other droids. Some feel it was a social justice story thread forced into the movie.

Sorry, but I’m gonna go there.  That C-3PO character was extremely annoying.  Always odds this, and odds that... just reboot him already.
