Similar, but 3 times as long, right? Even people who decide the official size is wrong are still coming up with lengths 2-2.5 times that of the Occupier for the AT-TE.

I get what you're saying, that is a big model for Legion, but that said, FFG has done well to include "huge" models in other SW games. I could still see a model 2.5x the size of an occupier finding its way into the game somehow. Maybe they'll do it like Armada where it's deployment is outside the standard ruleset? Or maybe they'll only be valid in a specific game type like X-wing?

Either way, I hope it happens.

yeah I don't think an 10-11 inch base is crazy as there would be some hang over.

Am I the only one picturing a single unit sized base per foot? Because if not, try it on for size. It's pretty funny.

That is one of the ideas that I had when thinking of how these things would work.  Its one way of dealing with the problem of the base taking up too much area, and it would allow for the units to step over low obstacles like barricades and what not.  It would also allow for infantry to run around through the legs.

I wasn't saying anything about it being too large, I was just informing him about how large it was. Most of the people who are most vocal about things like the AT-TE and LAAT have no idea how large they are and assume they are similar sizes to what we already have (just look at how many people think the AT-TE will fit on the Occupier base...).

Ah, I gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

I can only imagine you're talking about Pablo hildalgo here... Lol jk.

I don't see people thinking the ATTE will got on an occupier base.

I don't think anything around 33% longer than the AAT is unreasonable for normal games. Just say if unable to fit in a deployment it must deploy touching the board edge or something

Maybe, but FFG did basically cancel official support of Epic (Huge Ships) for X-Wing (no app support for the format or huge ships, cancelled the 2.0 Raider expansion, said there wouldn't be any more 2.0 Huge ships released) and the Executor was basically an unmitigated disaster for FFG that ended up getting delayed more than two years, with FFG noting "production issues" throughout the process.  They have since also announced they will not do a model of that size again.

Now, none of this may mean anything, and pre-Covid FFG was creating a dedicated Miniatures Division, so anything is possible.

That's a bit misleading. Epic isn't in the official app because they're making a new app. Also, nobody uses the official X-wing app anyway. They didn't re-release the Raider because you can still buy the old one anywhere for cheap.

(1) re: new app -- didn't Asmodee just lay off FFG's entire Digital Games division, responsible for things like apps and their online games?

(2) re: Raider cancellation -- but being able to buy the old first edition huge ships anywhere for cheap was always the case, but FFG still re-released the CR90 and the CROC and even mocked up the printing and packaging and posted release dates for the Raider, all while the old first edition stuff was still out there.  They didn't suddenly realize that the first edition stuff was out there.  My guess is they realized that the huge ships of second edition weren't selling enough to justify the amount of production and materials they require.

They may well make "huge" models for Legion, and they may well make more "huge" models for Armada and X-Wing again one day.  I'm jut noting the attempt to draw precedent for Legion's future huges by pointing to X-Wing and Armada Huges is probably worth tempering with the above caveats I noted.

The X-Wing App was contracted to another company, and apparently its replacement was as well.

Maybe? But there's a significant difference in production between Legion and any of the other SW games they've issued.

No assembly. No painting.

Both of which are a huge time/cost sink for FFG. The reason the SSD was a design "disaster" (other than getting the rules to work) was they had to find a way to get a 24" high detail model assembled and painted to the customer without breaking.

If anything, making huge based item will be way easier for legion. All they have to do is design the model and ship us the sprues.

This is a really good point, and probably just further goes to show that neither X-Wing or Armada make for a great precedence in determining how FFG will develop Legion.

I can't really imagine FFG ever wraps up Legion without making an AT-AT, for instance.  It's so iconic.  That said, it's probably the least interesting tactical piece that could be put onto the tabletop ... it basically gets plopped on a board and shambles slowly forward, nearly impervious, as it blasts stuff (see: the "battle of hoth" Star Wars Collectible Minis game played at Gencon... just hours and hours spent as five AT-ATs slowly creep toward the Rebel base...).  The thing about tabletop miniature games is that they tend to be more interesting as players control more pieces (and therefore have more decisions).  They also tend to be more interesting when pieces are generally responsive and dynamic (though this can certainly go too far, to where a piece's starting position isn't determinant enough).  They also tend to be more interesting when players have to weigh cost-benefit trade-offs of which pieces to risk/sacrifice, but a big huge is generally impervious, has a huge pile of hits, and then may eventually pop when that HP bank runs out.   Huge pieces (e.g. Forgeworld titans and flyers in 40k or Greater Daemons in Fantasy/AoS) tend to make awesome centerpieces on a display shelf, but most players seem to generally find them a bit detrimental to the actual game play in my experience.

Would a game of AT-ATs and AT-STs and AT-TEs and Hyrda Droids and Spider Droids and LAATs and heavy-laser towers and mobile artilery and airs speeders and fighters and squads of troops squaring off have been totally awesome?  Yes.  But that was a game around the 8-10mm scale, not the 32-35mm scale... 😞

I would agree.

Based on what I've seen so far and talking with people who play WH40k it feels like they're developing Legion as a competitor to GW. Mirroring it in many ways like boasting high quality models at a similar scale, (now in resin) but enticing more casual players with a much less expensive buy in and a significantly less complicated rule set.

These are new depths for FFG but if Legion continues to be successful, which with both solid devs and the Star wars brand I suspect it will, then I suspect we'll see more similarities to other TTWGs including "huge" or set piece units.

Exciting times.

Even if it would be a boring game piece, an AT-At is an auto sell. Like you said, it's just too iconic to pass up.
