Question about "Mini" Expansions

Recommended Posts

I don't know their proper term. I'm referring to the seven or so story expansions that accompany each Deluxe Expansion Box.

I just purchased Dunwich Legacy and the mini expansions for it are either sold out or selling at "collector" prices. Must one play every mini expansion for each deluxe expansion for the story to make sense? Is it possible to play only 2 or 3 of them and still have fun just playing the isolated scenarios?

The term you're looking for is "Mythos Packs." 😊

No.  Each mythos pack requires the deluxe for that cycle (and the core set) to be playable, but nothing more.  As far as story, you will miss out on some of it, but the whole campaign guide is available on the main Arkham Horror page under Player Support >> Rules >> Dunwhich Legacy Campaign Guide (https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/30/64/30640944-6e5c-4605-8406-6a1eb2e46a3f/dunwich_legacy_campaign_guide_eng.pdf) so you can discover the broad strokes there.  You'll miss the specific struggles, but not the overall narrative.

Every scenario can be played in standalone mode.  There's not anything that strictly requires you to play everything in a campaign (your game, etc etc) but skipping around will likely cause balance issues as you don't complete scenarios to earn XP or rewards, but the later ones still ramp the difficulty.

If you have access to it, Tabletop Simulator is a good option even for solo play until life gets back to normal.

Ah, that's a good point. So, if my only options were between a second Mythos pack in a cycle and the sixth, I should err towards the second.

Definitely.

You should look at the standalone scenarios too (Curse of the Rougarou, Murder at the Excelsior Hotel, etc).  They're generally pretty good and far better for one-offs than trying to deal with partial chunks of a campaign.

I will look into these. Thank you for being so helpful.

As stated, you can play any of them as standalone. However, you have to play them in order in campaign mode as the outcome of one mythos pack potentially affects the subsequent one and the narrative thread is, by and large, carried across the sequence of mythos packs in order of release. This is a particularly awkward time to be starting out with Arkham Horror LCG as availability of packs is at an all time low because of the issues that the pandemic is causing. Normally you wouldn't be struggling to find what you needed so much. Personally I wouldn't want to play a mythos pack as a standalone until I had played it in a full campaign...as it could spoil some of the experience of a first campaign playthtough.

The official standalone scenarios are certainly worth a go, again, if available.
