EC Henry did it again - the Corellian Transport YX-950

Recommended Posts

This guy is simply incredible. I couldn't imagine that he could create a desirable ship from that blob and now I want it in my Armada collection just as bad as the restored Nebulon! A support ship with at least 3 different ship card and a wide variety of slots, including a so far flotilla-exclusive fleet support on the Kyprin Renegade variant.

That is awesome!  I love the droid too!

I think the fluff he comes up with around the shuttle is a bit silly though.  If it’s an important means of getting cargo to and from the ship then it shouldn’t be like a mini-YT itself, it should be absolutely barebones, dedicating as much space to cargo as possible.  No living quarters, no hyperdrive, no weapons.  Any space on the shuttle that isn’t dedicated transport space limits the size of cargo you can bring up to the main ship.

I would have to disagree.  At minimum, it should be able to defend itself as well as flee should it be necessary.  In addition, in the case of the Brute, it should be able to act as a bridge.

Like it has been noted, it can also be built up as a reliable escort for the main ship.  In that case, it can be extremely useful.

What use case do you have in mind for that though?  Here’s my thinking:

It’s a shuttle - is it designed for carrying cargo to and from the main ship, or is it designed for blasting its way through blockades to take things from armed opponents?  Being good at one makes you worse at the other, and a compromise is going to be bad at both.

Let’s make a real life analogy: you take a Ford Transit and put a turret on the roof.  You’ve lost a huge chunk of cargo space under the turret, there’s now some cargo that simply won’t fit inside, and do you have a fighting vehicle which is going to stand against a tank or even a properly armed military light utility vehicle?  I think the answer is no - you’ve got a crap van and a crap fighting vehicle.

I‘m sure there are some niche applications where a bad cargo transport with minor offensive capability is useful.  Stealing from very poorly armed civilians perhaps?  Other than that I can’t think of a viable application.  It’s not going to fight its way past an imperial blockade or past the defences of the Hutts or Golden Dawn, so what am I sacrificing cargo capacity for?  Who is CEC marketing this thing at?

I’m aware by the way how silly this discussion is.  It’s Star Wars!  Sensible ships design would be extremely incongruous here! 😛

What about the Toyota Pickup technical that are used all over the ME and Africa?  Pintle-mounted recoilless rifle or 50-cal or rocket launcher in the load area, and still enough room to carry a squad, or a small amount of cargo and two people.

They're widely used because they're cheap, maneuverable, easy to maintain and can do several things (albeit none of them well).

The Wiki article is worth a read.

I'm just pointing out the issues.  It takes creativity, imagination, and recklessness.  Plus it is also supposed to be able to take passengers if the main ship can't land.

Those were interesting vehicles, especially when up armored with the rear facing turret.   Saw a bunch of those in Iraq used by the police and line units.
