Does the campaign box work as a stand alone game?

I know it’s not advertised to standalone but if I wanted to try out the game with just the campaign box would it be functional if I used my own tokens and trackers?

Yes. The hero decks are playable right out of the box. So you could use them to play the scenarios/campaign. Don’t know if the box has has them yet, but I would imagine it has token, trackers & status cards since it’s similar to the Core set.

@TylerTTI don't see why not. It comes with two complete hero decks and a campaign made of scenarios that can be played individually. The only issue you may run into is if the scenarios call for modules that are in the core box (like Standard).

@Hyperjayman In the live stream Boggs said the box is super streamlined, so there won't be any additional trackers and tokens because those all came with the core. The box is going to be the same size as the big expansions for L5R.

In the live stream, Michael Boggs specifically mentioned the interaction between Taskmaster (villain), Black Widow (hero) and Shadows of the Past. This makes me think that it is very likely that the Standard cards from the Core Set will be needed in the expansion scenarios.

Also on the live stream, we were told that there would be some modular encounter sets but that it was probably less than the number of villains. Speculation on my part, but I wonder if we might see Legions of Hydra (or even Bomb Scare) used in the expansion.

So I think in the reasonable worst case you are looking at proxying: HP trackers, all tokens, status cards and 22 encounter cards (7 Standard, 3 Expert, 6 Bomb Scare, 6 Legions of Hydra). Probably best to wait until it releases to find out for sure though!

Not necessarily. The "A Mess of Things" module from the Green Goblin scenario pack has a copy of "Gang-Up" in it. It's entirely possible one of the new modules will include a copy of "Shadows of the Past". We shall see (I so don't want to wait).

Q3 feels so far away! Honestly, I wasn’t all that excited about the new expansion after the GAMA images were shown but that reveal video really made me want to buy it.

There could be individual reprints of Core Set encounter cards, but my Arkham Horror LCG experience makes me think that this is less likely. In that game, standalone scenario packs don’t use Core Set cards but the campaign expansions do (although even then there are occasional exceptions). However, Marvel Champions is its own game so there’s no reason to assume it’ll be the same - it’s just my personal feeling. As you say, we’ll have to wait and see.

I think you’ll be missing the standard and Expert cards mainly, but if you’re willing to proxy those, it sounds like the box will have enough to run Hawkeye and Spider-Woman (with no changes from their pre built decks) vs the 5 scenarios in the box. I’m expecting all of those will recommend one of the 3 modules in the box.

The core set is probably a better introduction for the game though - this is going to introduce new key words and other stuff. Hard to argue this isn’t going to be a great first expansion to buy if you want to expand the game though - definitely the most bang for your buck.

Boggs mentioned the Taskmaster Villain/Minion interaction because it will be something players would as about anyway. Black Widow was suppose to be available now...but...beer bug happened.

@Assussanni They reprint cards from the core set in hero decks. Can’t see why why they wouldn’t reprint the standard module and Legions of Hydra module in this just to make sure it’s useable without the Core set.

Because they want to pack as much new content into the box as possible. The more reprints, the less new content we get.

Gang-Up was put into a Goblin scenario so that there would be 2 copies in the encounter deck, not as any sort of replacement for the core set copy.

I'd love to see the rest of the standard cards get reprinted in various scenarios, so that you could cobble together an extra standard encounter set, but that would be more coincidental than not.

In some ways, the cheapest way to try the game is to buy Wrecking Crew and your hero of choice.  Wrecking Crew doesn't use any cards from the Core box, so can play straight out of the pack, if you have your own counters.

Oh that’s awesome!
