i1 vs i3 for the CIS

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow seperatists! I know most of us have been flying the humble TFD and TUB. We all know the benefits i1 brings to the table. My question for all of you Roger Rogers out there is, is there a benefit to going to i3 with vultures and hyenas now that generics are cheaper and may be seen more in hyperspace? Being able to initiative kill one of those 5 x-wings with a proton torp feels good.

My current list has been all i3s but only for the pilot abilities. I found no advantage w/ generic i3s b/c I was always playing against i4s or higher. You end up in a weird points range where the ships are not ace level activation & have no pilot ability but too expensive to be a true swarm.

It's not a huge hike in cost and generally you'll fire before most generic lists. So gun for I3s when you can. PERSONALLY I like to keep it uniform-Initiative, so if one's I3 they're all going to be to allow me to be more flexible in my approach.

Equipping TF Drones with ESCs and Struts will allow you 25 points for one more 8th unit. You're not going to get away with that many I3s of the same. Not if you want a spare ship, anyway. At that point it's more worth it to put on some Hull Upgrades. BUT.

x8 TF Drones with ESC and Struts come in at 25pts each (200), taking off all that and trimming one extra drone leaves them at 133 points. So if you need one beefy lad and seven escorts for whatever reason that's a great bet.
x7 SP Drones with ESC and struts plus two hull upgrades leaves you at (27 VS. 32 respectively) (199). Trimming all that off leaves you with 147 of your points used. So...

What can you do with 67 points VS. 53 points?

Well, the Trade Federation Squad can fit a beefy Greivous if you want to for whatever reason. If you take one out you can totally fit Sear and a heavier ship with three escorts each, which IS pretty cash money.
With the Separatist drones you're just going to beat out most swarm/beef lists to the shot flat out but you need to make it count. So something with a good tactical relay might be a good fit.

Push comes to shove, six of either is really flexible no matter what you do, but it's a matter of having a much higher likelihood of quicker shots, moving last, and having 14 more points used or to spare.

It's your call.

I've been flying i3 strikers to stand a chance against other squads that contain a lot of generics - like droid swarms. I3 droid swarm scares me. What do you lose, struts?

It doesn't matter whether you go for i1 or i3, since dutch Vander's i4 trumps them both. Give him some proton torpedoes, and he can work well with any rebel squad.

Strong.

In my area, where we don't do tournaments, I see quite a lot of generics.  So, I don't know what people play with outside of my local shop.  We aren't into the whole "what is hot lately on the tournament circuit".   We play what we like.

I3 has been the strongest build since Day 1 of using these guys.  The ability to fire before a lot of other ships has been instrumental for me.  I1 has usually seen too many destroyed before they get a chance to fire.  There are a lot of generics out there that are I2 or even I1.  Also, a tie usually means you are moving and shooting first (as they want to go last).

I have so many questions about every part of this statement and I feel like any answers would only lead to further questions...

There's a place for that...

He's been posting it in every thread. I don't blame him; I had a similar experience recently.

My answer to the main question:

At 1 point for Vultures or 2 for Hyenas: Yes, about as often as not.

At 2 points for Vultures or 3 for Hyenas: No, almost never. That cost gets multiplied across the squad and 8 x 2 = 16 or 6 x 3 = 18 is way way too much for ships that are supposed to be nearly disposable anyway. The fact we're actually having this discussion makes me happy, but I don't think I3 is that valuable yet.

Like a few others have mentioned; it's a meta call.  The last tournament in my area we saw a lot of I1s and I2s(M3As, CIS, T65s, TIEs, etc) and one fella brought a CIS list that was majority I3 Hyenas with Torps and he cleaned up pretty well.  He saw what people were playing in the two weeks leading up to the tournament and went with I3.

This was a local 20 person tourney.  For larger tournaments it will be tougher to know what people will bring.  For an upcoming tournament myself and a buddy are headed to he is bringing I1s and I am bringing I3s.  It's match up dependent but the out come for each of us will be interesting.
