R1-J5 Astromech

How does R1-J5 (astromech) work? Specifically the repairing of damage. So if I repair a Ship damage is it saying that in the future I can pay energy to repair the same face up damage again or is it saying if I pay an energy I can repair that flipped over card?
 

Example: I repair disabled power regulator flip it facedown -> spend energy on R1-J5 -> repair the facedown damage
