The card text says "When you resolve the Evade defence effect you can cancel 1 die at close range or distance 1."

 

Does specifying distance 1 mean you can use it to cancel 1 die from a fighter attack?

That's correct. The Raider LOVES Iden Versio.

Also the Gladiator (saving up Brunson for another ship). The gladiator is tanky normally but that evade doesn't do much when you get into close range (which is where the gladiator wants to be). Putting Iden on a Demolisher makes it so much harder to kill.

Played against it a lot recently and while the raider is still just a raider it does everything better, it ties squads down better, it attacks big ships better. Brilliant upgrade that makes me think about my opponents raider now instead of discounting it
