New faction core set ideas

I agree that it should be Rey vs. Kylo as the core box (if they follow the pattern). If people feel that Rey and Kylo aren't commanders then I would like to see Finn across from Phasma and then get Kylo and Rey as first operatives. I think that eventually we should have two of each like Vader and Luke... operatives from the beginning of the trilogy and Commanders from the end.

This was my exact thinking when creating the First Order Core Set.

I’d actually like do see them do 1 faction starters for those that don’t want to get in the two player box; basically the minis/cards/dice/rulers/barricades from the core set and whatever that factions minis; IE, the empire starter would be vader, stormtroopers and speeder bikes.

Aside from the obvious (sequel trilogy) armies which we'll get depending on overall Legion sales, Legion only needs 3 more broad things as far as I'm concerned.

  • An ewok army of 3 or more units
  • An imperial "scum" corps unit akin to the new rebel one
  • A ton of new commanders and operatives, even if they're just costume changes for the old ones

This would effectively make mercenaries a faction within each faction.

I’ve heard somewhere that even existing expansions would be redone in hard plastic someday. If true this would be a opportunity To release existing factions as single starter sets

FFG has said it a couple of times during streams talking about the hard plastics.

My understanding is that it isn't a priority. I think it's slightly more likely the existing core sets would just have the soft plastics replaced with sprues rather than retire the old core in favour of two new ones.

Well that is definitely a good point.. FFG does seem to have a little problem keeping up. Some of these were announced as far back as August

This is probably why FFG/Asmodee are cancelling Destiny and are scaling back (if not cancelling) their rpg lines.

Desperately need to streamline their operations.

It’s only 17 items in the pipeline. They shouldn’t be concerned about that unit it reaches at least 407 backlogged items.

Sounds more like they are just cutting the fat. Destiny has been struggling for a while. It made a big splash initially but now not a lot of people play it regularly. Their RPG lines (with the exception of their SW line) have never really been that popular either. I suspect that they are canceling all of their non Star Wars RPG's. Even if the Star Wars one gets the axe, its basically complete except for sequel trilogy content.

Basically its really hard to compete with WoTC Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. D&D is absolutely dominating the RPG market right now due to its surge in popularity.

They did this with the DUST1947 game and it worked very well until they lost the contract with that game's designers. Since then, Dust has kept those starter sets and they are still a hit. I'm actually surprised that FF did not do it with this game as well as it could earn them a higher profit margin and draw in more players.

Well, it does actually make sense.

First of all, there will always be people that will buy the coreset eventhough they don’t really use the other faction’s minis.

Then, you can always look for a mate with whom you will split the coreset or the coresets. Which shouldn’t be too hard since you need to meet people / to have a community in your area to play the game with other people.

Last but not least, some people do not really have a community in their area (or don’t really care to reach for it) but have friends that can be draggued to play the game from time to time. You then need to have the two armies.

It is not an irrationnal move from FFG at all. Plus Star Wars being SW, with all its fan base, we don’t really care having extra minis don’t we ?

A Mercenary Scum Core set that included 2 corps and a Commander could also include Merc cards for Bossk and Boba Fett. Release a swoop bike separately and then a specialist pack and another commander and with 3-4 releases, scum is fully functioning. Scum and Mercs have the deepest amount of canon and characters to dig through, and the commanders and operatives should define the "feel" of the army. Skimmer tank for the heavy.
