DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 17, 2019 It is now 20 hours before my first viewing. I figure there are more people here who will see the movie before Friday and I wanted to keep the ‘trailer thread’ safe for those who have to wait until the end of the week. penpenpen 1,751 Posted December 18, 2019 Less than 3 hours to go, and I've barely slept. I feel like a kid on christmas. Which, I must admit, is not necessarily an entirely positive feeling to have as an adult. And what kind of idiot goes to see a movie at 10 in the morning? 🙄

DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 18, 2019 https://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-ix---the-rise-of-skywalker Well that was to be expected. As a fan I cherished the service it gave me but even I can see it becoming a bit too much on rewatches. I understand how professional reviewers would object to it though as it is a bit too much for the uninitiated at times. On a whole though I really enjoyed it and would rate it an 8.5/10 after this first viewing. 2 Khyrith and Benjan Meruna reacted to this
penpenpen 1,751 Posted December 18, 2019 I enjoyed it, but the first hour or so was an exhausting series of "let's explain things while running while the scenes are paced at such a breakneck speed you almost get winded". The OT never stopped to explain things and just moved along trusting us to get the gist. Ep. IX just holds your hand and dutifully paves over every perceived plothole and fires every chekovs gun left over from the previous 8 movies. Oh well, that aside, it's pretty damned good, although the mother of all space battles turned out to be a bit of a letdown in the end. But... JJ, ffs... The entire movie is you tying up plot threads och pouring out your entire mystery box, and then leave us hanging with the one you heavy-handedly inserted yourself. WHAT WAS FINN GOING TO TELL REY!? Is he force sensitive? (Has discussion with Jannah seemed to hint at it) Is he in love with her? Is he pregnant? Is her fly open? JJ, it's the last movie. To leave us hanging really is **** move. 5 2 Benjan Meruna, Talkie Toaster, Donovan Morningfire and 4 others reacted to this

StarkJunior 1,240 Posted December 18, 2019 I'm sure some of the stuff here will be explored in the post-TROS media. Things that the general audiences wouldn't care about, but that people who really consume all things Star Wars will love. 1 VadersMarchKazoo reacted to this
DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 18, 2019 I was so surprised to see Harrison Ford... And also a barrel of Snokes... 6 4 GroggyGolem, StriderZessei, DurosSpacer and 7 others reacted to this

Rey's story makes a lot of sense, too, and is a great way to give them the ultimate **** you to Ol' Grandpappy, when you really start to break it down. 1 VadersMarchKazoo reacted to this
DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 18, 2019 Biggest complaint: the opening crawl. The emperor returns and it is just a fact... no surprises, no wtf, no, it’s just “oh all of a sudden there was this transmission aaaaand... well... yeah, he’s back.” I know the crawl often drops us into the story but this could have been handled more in keeping with the gravity of the situation. 3 StriderZessei, DurosSpacer and GroggyGolem reacted to this
DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 18, 2019 That and the fact that planets blowing up just doesn’t resonate with me anymore. Imagine that... It’s no longer a shock when an ENTIRE PLANET blows up on screen. 3 GroggyGolem, DurosSpacer and P-47 Thunderbolt reacted to this

I actually loved that, since he was confirmed in the trailers already, and it read perfectly like a newspaper reel. Somewhat campy, but fitting with the original inspirations. The dead speaks! Like Episode III - WAR! Also the only time Rey has been mentioned in the crawl, and Kylo, too, I think? 2 GroggyGolem and kaosoe reacted to this

StarkJunior 1,240 Posted December 18, 2019 Palpatine being basically a Sith 'revenant' or 'wraith' in terms of physicality and the like was a neat thing, too. I like how it showed that yeah, the Dark Side can maybe prevent you from death, but you're going to be... that, forever. 3 Benjan Meruna, GroggyGolem and VadersMarchKazoo reacted to this
Desslok 13,574 Posted December 18, 2019 Did they explain why someone dropping through a shaft and then blowing up seconds later before blowing up again a few minutes later somehow , you know, didn't die? 1 DarthDude reacted to this

"The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." - He repeats the line. Implied the Force did it, basically, but they at least make him look... well, like he had that happen to him and used evil magic to help. StarkJunior 1,240 Posted December 18, 2019 (edited) To be honest, I was enjoying myself so much and everything was such a visually thrilling ride, I didn't even care after. But I like the BBEG Dark Lord types just being able to do things with their Evil Magic to complicate the heroes lives, and Palpatine is like my archetypal version next to Sauron and Morgoth. Desslok 13,574 Posted December 18, 2019 I'm really hoping that I can get to your place. I don't want to hate this movie - I don't want to hate ANY movie, let alone a Star Wars movie. But man, I'm not hearing anything encouraging here. 1 RLogue177 reacted to this
DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted December 18, 2019 Well he basically said “I have died before, more than once.” In fact there is a shot of force regeneration that is really, really cool. I wouldn’t knock it before I see it. And I definitely wouldn’t hate it before you do. Seems like a horrible approach to watch a movie in that manner. 3 Benjan Meruna, kaosoe and Donovan Morningfire reacted to this
