If there were a Clone Wars Box...

Recommended Posts

Rather than speculate on why the game isn't getting more content, I wanted to think about what could have been.

If there were a Clone Wars themed box, I'm assuming that it would be 100% for the campaign. There's a lot of material to draw on, but not enough to make a Republic or Federation faction stand toe-to-toe with the current Rebel, Imperial, and Scum factions. So what units are in that box?

There are B-1 and B-2 Battle Droids, droidekas, a trade federation tank, plus some Geonosians, and maybe a spider droid or one of those droid speeder bikes. Throw in Count Dooku and General Grevious or Klik-Klak and you've got a solid Core Box. But what else could go in there for the Core Box or expansions?

For the first Clone wars expansion, i'd think they'd have(for The GAR)...

Phase-1 Clone Troopers, Phase-1 Clone Officers, Generic Jedi Knight, Clone Commando Squads,
Delta Squad, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Mace Windu.

For the 2nd one I think they'd have(again GAR)...

Phase-2 Clone Troopers, Phase-2 Clone officers, Saber Tank, republic E-web, RPS Troopers
Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Plo-koon, Ahsoka Tano, Kit Fisto

3rd Box(Still GAR)...

Galactic Marines, Arc Troopers, Clone Jet Troopers, Clone Cold Assault Troopers, At-Rt
Ki-Adi Mundi, Ayla Secura, Commander Bly, Commander Bacara, Fives, Echo

anyone else have any GAR thoughts or shall I continue?

too big scale for imperial assault type gameplay.  Imperial assault never feels like the clone wars.  its small cells disrupting a big unstoppable force.

I always thought the 'Armada Scale' for ground combat would have been a nice niche for the clone wars.  even if i have zero interest in the prequels.

Yup, if Legion had been this...  you could have had battles with mutliple AT-ATs and with a much more interesting scale, possibly even bringing over some X wing ships into the battle!  This would also have kept IA Skirmish alive...  ah well.

This was something many of us talked about and agreed about before Legion even was announced.  I was frankly shocked that Legion employed larger scale miniatures than Imperial Assault.  And agree, it would have been the perfect setting for Clone Wars type battles.

I reject the notion that just because we've only seen certain parts of the Clone Wars that that sort of combat is all that could have existed. The Clone Wars were inspired by the political backdrop to WWII, which saw every kind of combat imaginable. Naval battles where ships never saw each other, amphibious assault, aerial and artillery bombings, tank warfare, vicious urban fighting for city blocks, sieges, guerrilla warfare in rural areas, espionage, sabotage, etc. The beauty of both the Galactic Civil War and the Clone Wars is that they are big enough to tell all kinds of stories in, and so I think an IA box in a Clone Wars setting is at least possible.

I guess i was talking about the theme.

Rebels vs Empire: very hit and run, small skirmish, underdog story.

Clone wars: big battles, vehicles, troops, capital ships and starfighters, big explosive battles

You're not wrong that the overall themes are different.

But in a way, you can look at Return to Hoth and how that dealt with one of the largest ground battles in the Age of Rebellion.

The opening mission takes place during that battle, but focuses on a small part of the battlefield. It works.

There is no reason why similar approaches could be applied to Clone Wars battels here and there.

And then you only have to look at the Clone Wars Series to see how small scale skirmishes still played a big part in the story, and some of the later ones even had continuing campaign feels to the stories.

It could totally be done.

absolutely.  Im not going to 'Mep' it up.  clone wars is just not my preference.

And that's a fair point too. Not everyone will love having Prequel (or Sequel) Trilogy content in their Star Wars game.

I for one wouldn't be too keen, as I feel there is still plenty of OT stuff that they've missed out on that should get priority.

Of for sure. We all agree that FFG should continue pumping this stuff out until they are dead and in the ground. I for one want a box that gives me stuff leading up to the Battle of Endor or showing what other commandos were doing on Endor while Luke, Han, and Leia were getting lost and having the teddy bear picnic. I want a mission that is the battle itself acting as a big 12 - 15 round finale of everything Imperial Assault is to all players. But if that ain't gonna happen, why not dream?

I think between the show and the comics the clone wars era has a big enough fan base to warrant an expansion.

They did come out with Clone Wars units for both X-Wing and Legion, so clearly there is interest in them.

The argument that the Clone Wars dealt more with larger battles is really weak, like Majushi said a skirmish battle could just be a encounter that's taking place during a larger battle and for the campaign mode you're just playing as heroes anyways through a story.

For arguments sake, let's say they released a Clone Wars themed core set, instead of 4 random heroes we get Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka and Capt. Rex and instead of Vader we get Dooku. They're already coming out with some of these figures for Legion, just resize them for Imperial and we'd be good to go. Aside from that they could go with the Republic Commandos, Cad Bane, Ventress with a Dathomir expansion, all the various Jedi Masters and the cross play would be amazing, Republic vs the Empire, CIS vs Rebels, etc.

Admittedly, I'd probably be happier with units from the Legends E.U., Kyle Katarn, Jerrec and his Dark Jedi, Mara Jade.....one can dream.

At the end of the day what's important for me with these kind of collectible games is more options, I'd rather have more options than not. Even if it's for stuff, I don't particularly want. Like I hated the Rebels show but I'll still pick up the Rebels characters because it's more options for me and I'll just ignore the events of the show.

I'll say this, I'll never argue to never put out sequel trilogy sets, but I will argue that there are more profitable eras to mine when it comes to anything Star Wars.....like Kotor.

Maybe we, as a community, should make New "expansions" Sort of like how the people of IACP and RIAST are trying to keep the Skirmish game alive. There are plenty of talented people here, as well as a lot of tools like the Kensei Imperial Assault Suite, that Custom Map builder(haven't gotten this to work but apparently you guys have), as well as various other things i'm sure. What do ya'll say? If we do, we should start with Endor, as that is, I think, the thing most wanted by many of the fans.

I have spoken

Not opposed to it, though not something I personally have any experience in. Do you have links to the Kensei Suite and Map Builder you speak of?

Yes, let me find them real quick....

Here

I cannot seem to get the map creator to work but I hear the campaign module on vassal does something similar.
I also know that someone on here was posting custom tiles they made themselves, I'll find the thread and link it...

Here's the Creator's account: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/profile/314452-fourtytwo/
and then the Thread his work was in:

@Fourtytwo Could you hop over here real quick?

@Bitterman What happened to the other page of yours? I can't seem to find it(that's where you can download the Card Creator for those not familiar with what I'm talking about) Can you post the download thing here?

Uh.... this is weird. The thread seems to have been deleted? 🤔

You can download the tools from here but I have no idea why or when the thread about it was removed. I guess it must have been by a mod? Anyone want to tell me why?

I know the Clone Wars are scaled differently, but I think there are some ways around that.  Instead of making the heroes Jedi, make the Jedi rarer allies.  The heroes can be specialist clones of varies types, not unlike Republic Commando (though not all Clone Commandos).  Imperial Assault was rarely about large battles anyway, so each mission can be more of a covert, self-contained thing.

You won't get Geonosis or Utapau, but a lot of episodes of The Clone Wars are staged like this, anyway.

Units could look something like this:

Player heroes in the core box-

Arc Trooper- "heavy" unit

Clone Commando- "assault" unit

Galactic Marine- suppression specialist

Clone Officer- "Gideon"-esque

Polis Massa medical droid- healer

Jedi padawan- force powers, utility

Allies in the first wave could include:

5x Clone troopers

Obi Wan Kenobi

Anakin Skywalker

For enemies-

Super Battle Droids

Battle Droids

Droideka

Reek

Spider Droid

Villains

Count Dooku

Tactician droid

If the named characters would seem too underpowered, maybe make them super strong and have whole missions about them.  Let's say the entire squad, plus Anakin, is trying to take down a lone super-powered (and multi-activation Dooku in one mission).  And, if there's one thing I've learned as a DM over the last few months, always remember to have extra objectives outside of "kill".

I would be all over a Clone Wars Imperial Assault-style game.

You could even have it focused on a group of mercenaries or soldiers that start off working with the Republic and then post Order 66 end up siding with Separatist holdouts. Characters being:

Republic Commando (sniper character)

Jedi knight (traditional force user)

Jedi Padawan General (trooper/jedi mashup)

ARC Trooper (weapon duelist)

Mandalorian Combat Instructor/mercenary(melee/flamethrower)

Republic Intelligence (stealth character)

Bounty Hunter (independent character)

Alien Freedom Fighter (Twilek, Wookie, Pantoran, Rodian, etc...)

Clone Trooper (starts with Clone trooper allies in play and bonus for fighting nearby them/activates as a group)

I would personally have it start battle of Geonosis being inserted into the fray, such as sweeping for survivors and fighting in the caves and have it follow the duration of the war carrying out small hit and run missions and hunting down top secret Separatist weapons projects/factories/terrorist plots/etc... even if it just followed the show roughly you have tons of episodes where there are small forces inserting behind Separatist lines to take on larger forces. There is a massive plethora of awesome allies to draw upon and some great enemies.

Core set enemies alone could be:

B1s x9

B2s x3

Droideka x2

AAT

General Grievous

Geonosian Drones x4

Reek

And it could be compatible with many fringe/scum units like Bossk, Nexu, Vader/Palpatine eventually and so on that you could replace the tokens in the base game with minis from existing IA game.

Anyways I don't know if it would happen but so in for it if it does.
