2019 VASSAL Autumn Tournament Report

Recommended Posts

@xanderf vs @stephen_harris70
At 395 pts, Stephen had the choice and gave me 2nd player.
He picked my 'Superior Positions' objective.

Stephen managed to beat up my squads a bit, but did some good work behind one of my capital ships to get 3 VP tokens.  In returned, I wiped out his squads and only managed to plink one of his ships from a huge distance for a single VP token.  As we were both near max squad, the final result after a 3-hr match came down to a difference of those few VPs and my remaining squads - scored of 143 (me) vs 104 (him).

No ships died on either side, or indeed were ever in any real risk from the ENORMOUS squadron furball in the middle of the map.

With a 39 MoV, I eked out a 6-5 win.  Logfile.

A close game! A first for this Tournament.

It was late in the day for both of us - the aggressive timeline of the tournament has made weekend scheduling difficult.  For myself, I missed a couple of obvious fire opportunities, moving off one ship before it shot at all - that would possibly have let me BARELY grab a 7-4 if I could have dealt with those squadrons one turn earlier than I did and been able to fully commit to VP harvest on the last 2 turns.

@Zamalekite (199) vs Rikash (105) ends with victory for the perfidious Rebel admiral Zamalekite (just for Karneck) with MOV of 94.

Rikash was given first player (again).

Objective played - Intel Sweep

A good game that would have been closer (and possibly back my way) if I hadn't messed up the squadron game. I moved up too aggressively and was forced to alpha. Zombie Ten did horrible triple tap things and I lost the squad game. I wasn't quite able to pick up the nebulons thanks to some clutch (zombie) blocks by the Evil Toryn Farr and her little ships (that were somehow able to block an SSD that plowed into them).

Thanks to @Zamalekite for a great game!

@RealVeers vs deDios
RealVeers was 1st player
Objective played - Hyperspace Assault

RealVeers scores 217
deDios scored 53

RealVeers total MOV 164 - 8-3

Veer's rogues gallery scared me into risking everything for an early table to end the bees - just 3 measly ships to chase.

His external racks one-off'd my ramvette Dodonnas Pride after it missed his vital General-Dodonna-powered hyperspace-entry shots, and it fell apart for me from there. Mon Karren chased Jaina's Light into a corner (good distraction by Veers), and accomplished his part of the plan, hoping the other boys could get Admonition and Liberator without his help to end the game. It seems I 'overestimated their chances'. *grumble* Admonition *grumble*

Veers was a gracious 5am opponent even without bacon or caffeine and was glad to get to have played him.

I have a problem, I am to aggressive with my fighters.  The moment someone comes in range, I strike.  I did it again this time, attacking when Xanderf was at extreme range.  This placed the furball among his ships where he could use flak and my fighters were often out of control range.  It was not the first time I had made that mistake and it will not be the last.

We both worked hard to make sure the other could not VP harvest, especially late when we new it was going to be a close game.

Heh, I do the same thing all the time - only reason I didn't this game was because I just did it in my round 1 like 2 days earlier and had it go badly for me, so I kept them close to the ships.

A point of error.
Flechette Torpedoes is not effected by face up damage card "Targeter Disruption".
As a black dice with the critical icon is “spent” to trigger a card effect during the Resolve Attack Effects step, and is not a critical effect that is resolved in "Resolve Damage" step".

ChavoGuerrero vs @RapidReload
ChavoGuerrero was 1st player
Objective played - Contested Outpost

Chavo Guerrero scored 215
Rapid Reload scored 201

Chavo total MOV 14 - 6-5

I've got a log file but it is too large to be uploaded. This was an intensely close game. We set the obstacles safely off to the side to be ignored for the rest of the game and RR set the station in the bottom right corner, which I gravity shifted up towards my side. RR set a field of mines between the station and my fleet, giving me the opportunity to fly directly into them, immediately blowing up a Gozanti. The one mine a CR90 landed on knew who birthed it and turned up no damage.  RR controlled the station for the first three turns, while destroying my second flotilla and Demolisher. The second half was spent with me slow rolling over the station, frantically repairing damage, and getting shots in where I could. I capped the CR90, one Z95, a flotilla, and the Pelta with a blindingly lucky use of leading shots.
I've bitten all my nails off and now I need a cup of tea...

Angry Ewok vs Realadmiralsdoitinspace

Real was given first player

We played Sensor Net

Ewok 313

Real 44

269 MOV so a 9-2 to Ewok

Looking to push in quickly and prevent token farming Real's Battle Cruiser got focused down by squads and Red Dice shooters, Rogues and CR90s finished off all the other ships except the MC80 Assault Cruiser and the fleets moved apart.  Shout out to Real for playing at what was a very late time for him to accommodate my work schedule.

@medaloffairness vs. @Beginner2Winner

Beginner2Winner was first player.

Superior Positon was played.

We started with our game at Tuesday but were not able to finish it, so we intended to continue today. Unfortunately, MoF needed to cancel our appointment and was not able to offer an alternative within the next couple of days due to work and family.

So he conceded, which is than 8 points to Beginner2winner with a MoV of 140. Does medaloffairness get 3 or 0?

This is extremely sad as it stops a very nice and pleasant game. And I just had dropped Raddus and prepared a nice kill-box with the hope to an even better result - which I now will never know..

Anyways, Medaloffairness, thanks for the game.

@xanderf vs @187-Leon

Xanderf was 1st player

Fire Lanes was played

187-Leon: 580

Xanderf: 39

MOV: 400

Tournament points: 10 -1

I took second and Xanderf choosed Fire lanes. I was able to kill Marrek and 1 Defender in the first round. In the Second Round Moralo shred trough his Tie Bomber and the last Defender. In Third round Moralo, Harrow and some friends killed the thrawn flag-ship while my demolisher did serious damage to his Corrupter VSD and was able to avoid his front arc. In The 4th round Demolisher survived by 2 hull and finished his last big ship. Xanderf had some really bad rolls and choosed the very wrong Objective. Thx for the game. I will go to bed now and he will grab a coffee 🙂

It was the one which gave you the fewest tokens to Moralo around with.

Still, though - he's a bit OP!

Targeting Beacons though... put the beacons as close to your corners as possible.  They'll effectively be throwing around 2 tokens, and the benefit for throwing around more than that is minimal even if they do reach them.

And they don't get 270 points.

In the end, I don't think the number of tokens particularly mattered, so the objective was a bad call for me as he wracked up a huge amount of VPs off it.  He's free to move the same token over and over, after all - effectively, he only needs one, and each shuttle can move it 3 or 4 times a turn as each ship with FCT near it finishes its movement, giving Moralo another move+shoot each time.  He played Moralo pretty conservatively, keeping his Escort fighters ahead of him, so there was no real way to engage or pin him down - Moralo would just slink forward, blast the heck out of something, then drop back.

IMHO, the biggest mistake I made was letting him set up camp on the station.  Since obstructions prevent squadrons from being "engaged", he could simply bounce his shuttles back and forth a mm or so on the station to trigger a token move and set off Moralo.

I definitely did a lot of things wrong, and indeed my dice were dreadful, but even so - I dunno, Moralo feels...game-warping.
