What's units are must buys

Recommended Posts

I bought 2 cores of Legion when it was first released but then got a new job and moved twice so I wasn't able to keep up with it. I've picked up an expansion every once and awhile.

I would like to a tournament this weekend while try to build a list I realize everything I could make isn't much different than what I could have made a year ago.

My questions are:

What expansions offer the most fun?

What expansions impact gameplay the most?

If you were to buy 3 expansions released in the last year for each faction what would they be?

As a rebel player and none completely:

Fun: the landspeeder, Sabine(especially fun with Han) and I have to say Tauntauns but I've not played them enough really. The theme is mobility high mobility is fun so on the sideline is the airspeeder.

Expansions fun: pathfinders, wookies, Veterins to offer three expansions that I've enjoyed that don't match exactly the fun units to play. They where quite fun to paints character wise.

Expansions impact: priority supplies. Generic general box set and commandos have had the biggest impacts in my opinion

To try answer the last question I have the full collection so a bit irrelevant, but I did buy multiples and have no regrets on:

Generic commander box for both factions

Tauntauns and deathtroopers

Finally..

Commandos and scouts

Only a Rebel player here as well so can only help with one faction, but if you got two core you are off to a good start. Luke and AT-RTs are some of the best Rebel options you can run. Both are also fun to play, not as complex as other units, and can counter some of the big things in the meta right now. Rts have two really good options that got better with the recent points change. Luke is going to get even better after his operative version of him drops and you will have 6 command cards for him to use.

As for impact unit I would say Liea is a big player since she is cheap, but is very supportive of the rest of the army. She may not be the easiest or the most fun to play (I really like Han/Chewie), but she gets stuff done every time.

As for units in the last year the Rebel Veterans and tauntauns are very very important/good. Tauntauns are so good and versatile that they should be first on any Rebel buyers guide. Veterans offer two infantry in the box that offer an interesting combo with token control and fire support.

For heavies the landspeeder is probably a safer choice over the airspeeder, but they are both find  just not first round buying (I may be bias since I have little luck with both options).

Special forces your millage may very, but wookies and pathfinders are fine. They are more situational then the other listed options since they will often win you the game as often as they fall over to a stiff breeze. I got a soft spot for them both (as well as Jyn), but cannot recommend them that a first round buy without a lot of warnings.

Rebel player here!

Most Fun:

Jyn

Airspeeder/Landspeeder (for similar reasons)

Commandos

Impact:

Tauntauns

Specialists

Sabine

What I’d buy (Rebels):

Specialists

Landspeeder (though I haven’t played with it yet!)

Sabine

What I bought (Imperials):

Boba Fett

Gen. Veers

AT-ST

No one put the veterans. I think they are actually pretty good.

I think all the expansions are fun. I've had the least fun with jyn just because she dies at really inoportun times ( it's too easy to blank her 7 dice in a row and lose her in heavy cover)

I like the royal guard and Palpatine too though. I think the shore troopers and especially Deathtroopers are Imperials impact players besides their operatives (who should be in the Scum faction)

For imperials, I'd say most fun are our bounty hunters.  both are fun models to paint and play.  they offer a mini mission in the game and really don't rely to much on having other units to prop them up.

So, I'm not sure if when you say "last year" you really mean the last 12 months or "expansions outside of the core set" since you said you only had 2 core sets.

If you are looking for 3 expansions to enhance the core sets, my suggestions would be:

Rebels: Leia, Rebel Veterans, & Tauntauns -or- Rebel Commandos - I think these would enhance the core units while providing some flexibility to list builds.  Tauntauns are very efficient but I also like the fact that the Commandos give you two units to use (feel free to buck the trend and use both at the same time if you are playing more casual games).

Empire: Veers, AT-ST, & Shore Troopers -or- Krennic, Death Troopers, & Shoretroopers - I think Shores are a good all around addition.  Veers has always been a good Commander but I think the recent point adjustments have enhanced his vehicle synergy enough to really make him shine.  However, Krennic/DT synergy is also pretty great.

If you can fit a 4th expansion in, I'd highly suggest the Specialist pack for each faction.

If I owned 2 cores and could buy 6 expansions with which collection I had to play Legion for years, I would buy:

1. Priority Supplies

2. Rebel Specialists

3. Imperial Specialists

4. AT-ST

5. Tauntaun Riders

6. T-47

Edit: this may seem unfair since the rebels get one more expansion than the imperials. However, the core set imps are worth more points. So the rebels need the help.

All you need are the ones on listed HERE.

My favorite response is to buy what you like. If you are going to be a competitive player this is different and that is to buy them all and multiples of many of them (you will see triple Taun-Tauns, double speeders, triple snipers, etc). If you buy what you like, you will be happy. I LOVE the Biker Scouts and Shoretroopers so both of these are priority; the Hoth Rebels are my least favorite so those have yet to be purchased, despite being a really good unit (I am on a gaming budget so I have to spread out my purchases and I am late to Legion).

in my opinion for rebels

Leia shoud be the first for rebels for fun and competitive as she allows a good commander for cheap.

for fun what ever you you enjoy thematically.

for competitive

1. tauntans are super strong but need to be run as 2 squads minimum IMO

2. snipers are still a good cheap unit with pierce.  1 to 2 is a good number to allow for options

3. sabine is really strong but expensive

Hey Nuke,

Newer to this myself so grain of salt and all that.

  • With 2 starter boxes you have 4 corps troops, but there are not any corps troops you can go wrong with imho. They all have a solid purpose.
  • For imperials, Vader is a 200 point leader, that is 1/4 of your army. I would recommend picking up one of the cheaper commanders and maybe one of the bounty hunters to open up your options.
  • A second commander or agent isn't a bad idea for rebels either. Leia seems to be a top rebel pick, but Han is, well Han and Chewbacca has some assistance for any leader except Jyn.
  • Since you have 2 AT-RTs a 3rd isn't a bad idea, but the tauntauns seem to be overtaking them on the table.
  • Rebel Commandos and Imperial Scout Troopers are listed in most places as must haves, but that may be changing.

That said, my most important advice is get an idea of how you want to play and experiment with one of the list builders to see what it will look like and what you have to buy. I want to run Sabine, and get up close with bombs so I am focusing on Fleet Troopers, Commandos and the specialist packs for medical droids and rebel officers (to add to troops, not to lead my army) to facilitate that. I may or may not add wookies, but for now a land speeder or a pair of AT-RTs are in my queue for covering fire.

Hope this helps.

How so? I haven't played in a while and never against Tauntauns.

Better range, armor to help against ranged attacks and minimize how much damage a ram can do, surge to crit to help push damage through Tauntaun's stack of dodge tokens.  At least, that's my take.
